What have I done haha. She just wont idle. Just starts up and dies straight away! Even when warm. I took carby apart and rebuilt it with all new gaskets etc. I used carby cleaner and dried it off. Check everything twice before assembly and left nothing out. Could I have blocked up a port with crap when I cleaned it. I never used a compressor to blow it out so maybe thats the Fault!

Farout you must be getting frustrated with it by now.

Oh not to bad. Found out power valve was blocked off so added the power valve but now it wont idle haha

It's just a junk vehicle - get rid of it quick.I'm prepared to take it off your hands ;-) First and easiest thing to check is that there are no vacuum leaks. Are all of the hoses reconnected to the carb / ports blocked off! Is the carb bolted down properly and the base gasket in place! (don't overtighten it though).

Power valve was causing the stutter then - I thought it was not enough gas and too much air ;-)
xpfairmont,

Yes, I'd check that to. Have you done a leak down test!

Did you fiddle with the float levels at all! Does it run if you give it some gas, just doesn't idle! Maybe as simple as winding the idle adjustment screw down a bit. Depends on what exactly you did / changed when you ran the gasket set through it. Does it not idle because it starves of fuel, or runs way too rich! (I'm assuming starving)
bellky,

Yep, as others have said: Either vacuum leak or idle circuit lacking air and/or fuel.

Didn't you also replace the intake recently! Did you have the motor running fine after that, or did you do the intake and carb at the same time (I can't remember the full post)! If both at the same time, check intake for leaks, and timing (since you would have pulled the dizzy). Is the dizzy mech or vac!If vac, is that hooked up too!

Runs very nicely if you give it gas. Just as soon as ya take foot of she just dies. Start and give gas she fires up then instantly dies. I have taken carby apart twice now to make sure every gasket was the same.
Things I have changed are the main gaskets. Also put a 3.5 Power valve in there as there was no power valve. (thought this might be problem so swapped to no power valve again and it still died so put power valve back in) Also put a #31 nozzzle on primary shooter. Jets are the same and have blown and carby cleaned the carby. All ports seem clear and clean.
I have put intake manifold on about a month agoi and car was running way better but still had stutter so decided to do rebuild.have been playing around with idle mixtures and nothing works there. Just still the same. So thinking leak somewhere! How do i test for a leak.
Havent touched float levels and primary level is spot on.Seconday float is a touch high only a tiny bit.
Carb has a hose going to the Dizzy.

Onwe thing I did notice is when taking the base plate off these was a screw missing from where the primary power valve sits above it.Might flip it over again and wonder if I put the screw in wrong area!
Will update once I do this.

Ok screw location made no difference

What's the best way to check for vacuum leak when I can't actually keep her running .
cuda.340,
Jul 5, 3:41pm
strip it again, blow out all the air bleeds & every orifice & try again. if an air bleed is blocked it causes it to loose idle & an air bleed orifice can be very small
jason18,
Jul 5, 3:44pm
OK will do. Where is the air bleed areas! They aren't the 4 little gold holes on primary and 2 gold ones on secondary side! You see them looking directly down onto Carb.Should I use thin wire down them to see if they are blocked!

Don't know whether to admit this, but I had a similar thing after I rebuilt a 600 vac sec Holley, and installed on new manifold. Turned out i had left out a blanking plug on a whopping hole behind the carb.
cuda.340,
Jul 5, 3:57pm
yes Jason they're the them gold holes you're refering too, compressed air is the best option.
jason18,
Jul 5, 4:24pm
Oh k cheers. I chucked carb cleaner through them and they blew out ok but will do it again. I didnt undo any Blanking plugs from memory! If this doesnt work will take carby to the carb guy to get him to double check

Check all points on the carb where something could attach or be plugged. Can't remember if the DP's had the big port on the back for the brake booster (or was that a chev thing!).There is also the fast idle screw next to where the throttle attaches to the carb - try winding that in - which in effect gives it more gas / throttle at idle. What is the lowest RPM it will run at!

Sounds like a vacuum leak.Power valve might be a bit low. When you have no power valve you usually jet up a bit.Whats jets are you using!Have you played with your idle mixture!

Guys seriously Im such a muppet I put the main body around the wrong way ahahhaha I looked at it sitting on the engine and thought why is the choke on the secondaries. What a muppet.

Will turn it around now lol

good on you for having a go at it,and owning up to it!sometimes we get ahead of ourselves with our entusiasim,i know I have done stuff like that, remember recemtly playing around with my distributor, couldn`t get a spark out of her, scratching my head wondering.spied this thing on the bench, yes it was the rotor!

a real muppet would not have asked for help.
