i have a 5.7 2004 SS commodore. it sounds like a girl car, really quiet. is it worth putting some extractors on and modifying the exhaust. i have been quoted $600 to cut out a bit in the exhaust (leaving the cat convertors) and $1200 for a set of extractors, thats full cost fitted. will this increase petrol consumption and what will it mean for performance. Dont really want the car for speed but would love to be able to hear it rumble like a V8 should.

No it's not "worth" doing - it will cost you $600 / $1800 and there is no practical benefit, unless you count pissing your neighbours off and potentially failing Warrants of Fitness as a benefit.

(At least, there is no benefit unless you get the engine tuned to the new exhaust system. a lot more dollars. Especially as the ecu computers controlling most engines aren't made to be easily re-programmed.)

Your car already "sounds like a v8 should" - don't ruin it with a "look at me" fart cannon exhaust. Those are for insecure little boys with little engines only.

i dont want it so loud i need earmuffs just a nice rumble like my last V8 had and that passed warrants

Not an expert but I have a 5.7 VT SS. In theory the extractors and modified exhaust should improve performance and fuel economy. In practice you will love that rumble of the V8 and will put your foot down just to hear the sound and blow your fuel economy out the window! LOL and good luck.

is it worth keep the cat convertors in

jessie01, Jul 6, 12:31pm
i dont like the sound of that its like a tractor not a nice rumble. actually it sounds more like a strange farting noise

Dont think they fit "fart cannons" to V8s

tazcsv, Jul 6, 1:37pm
Exhaust yes but extractors i wouldnt worry about unless you have to much money.

jessie01, Jul 6, 1:39pm
nope i have very little money like many these days. i think i will go with the exhaust for now and just see what that sounds like first then maybe later look at extractors. does anyone recommend what kind would be best to buy please

jessie01, Jul 6, 1:40pm
i am worried it may sound tinny when i do the exhaust. i really want it to have a deep sound

ofive, Jul 6, 1:40pm
What a muppet. This isnt a jappa.

tazcsv, Jul 6, 1:49pm
Your local muffler guys should have a clue as to which ones will suit it the best.

jessie01, Jul 6, 1:50pm
yep he has but sometimes its best to ask around

bellky, Jul 6, 1:58pm
Take the cats out.

jessie01, Jul 6, 2:04pm
yeah i have been considering taking them out have been told its better on fuel withouot them and they dont last forever. will it effect getting a warrant just wondering as they are there for reducing emmisions i understand

jessie01, Jul 6, 2:09pm
awesome thank u for that

bellky, Jul 6, 2:12pm
Thanks sw20. Take the cats out first and then go from there. It won't cost much to do and it will make a difference.

Might pay to read this as well.Looks like to comply fully you will need to geta LVV cert.

I haven't ever looked at those details cause nothing I've ever modified has had a cat, but I'd be REALLY surprised if removing a cat from a production vehicle should pass a WoF.

sw20, Jul 6, 2:30pm
Why! Are you guessing on how loud its going to be!

bellky, Jul 6, 2:32pm
We have two v8 cars with the cats removed and they pass wof.

jessie01, Jul 6, 2:57pm
bellky do they sound nice without the cats and have you noticed a petrol difference at all

bellky, Jul 6, 3:05pm
Good questions. One car has the cats replaced with just pipe and it sounds mean, but it has other zorst mods too. The other car's cats were replaced with small hotdog mufflers and it sounds marginally better. As for gas mileage, I don't know but I'd say it definitely won't use any more.
