Headlights - two settings?

There are too many dim people like you on the road!
Those dim, 5W parking lights/sidelights are not making you any more visible!
Just observe the other drivers coming towards you on a long straight road.
You notice the vehicles with dipped or high beams earlier. Then you see the vehicles without lights approaching and just before you meet, you can see that they are driving with parking lights on! That is plain silly and useless to drive with parking lights on. Do I need to tell about my dad who had to have dimmed lights during WW2 in Finland, and he did not see the train with dimmed lights! All the vehicles were instructed to keep dimmed lights because of Russian planes might spot them! My dads vehicle got hit but he survived. So I am here to tell the story.
I heard Russians are still driving with only parking lights on in dimly lit streets while in Scandinavia they need to have headlights on 24/7 all year long! Which one has better traffic statistics!

100watt reverse lamp on manual switch fixes that problem in the blink of an eye.

ballin2014, Mar 25, 12:59pm
my car has two settings., Off and blinding the other driver that tailgates me pmsl

mrfxit, Mar 25, 1:38pm
It helps before you get to the corner & about to go in to the corner, thats the point

mrfxit, Mar 25, 1:39pm
Is this ^ ^^Jazz's wife !
Because that posting is simply too short Mr Jazz ;-)

mrfxit, Mar 25, 1:41pm
Little suburb roundabouts . agreed
Bigger roundabouts, most days no excuse.

meathead_timaru, Mar 25, 2:31pm
Yes. But you knew that already.

gilco2, Mar 25, 2:35pm
this works same for me on my jappa. Some people are just too lazy to use them and make excuses why they cant.

meathead_timaru, Mar 25, 2:46pm
I agree. I've never had any problem even on the smallest roundabouts.

edangus, Mar 25, 2:55pm
I seldom use High Beam these days. The more modern the vehicle and its lighting system, the less need there is.
Sure I will use it if I have to, but very sparingly.

rob_man, Mar 25, 3:08pm
Are you worried you might damage the environment in some way if you take advantage of the systems built into your car to make it easier to drive at night!

msigg, Mar 25, 4:41pm
Yea edangus is correct, so many cars on the road that most of the time you can't use them. Also if you come into a corner on full beam sometimes when you dip the vision is so much better rounding the corner be the lights are in front of you instead of out into space, the other thing is where there are so many reflector sometimes high beam reflect back so much it nearly blinds you. Drive safetly

rob_man, Mar 25, 5:58pm
Townies. snort.

edangus, Mar 25, 6:25pm
Nope, just don't feel the need to use it, I can see perfectly well with my glasses. If I was still cruising around in pre 2000s cars, I would probably need to use them. The light just never seemed to go far enough. These days in most modern cars it does and it is far clearer.
Even the Wife's Altezza with factory HID upgrades is not quite as good as my BMW or Chrysler, but I tend not to drive that at night. My Old HQs and XAs, well I woulda been a complete munt if I did not use the High Beam.

rob_man, Mar 25, 6:30pm
If your low beams are good enough to drive without putting them on full beam you are probably blinding the oncoming traffic.
As for HID lights, I find them lacking compared to a decent set of halogens. Maybe you're driving too slow.

edangus, Mar 25, 6:42pm
Maybe I am slowing down, I am getting old. The last 3 modern vehicles I have had have all had Xenon lights, so dunno. Can't see how I would be blinding others, it is after all a warrantable issue. It is a notable difference at night though. Heck, it could even have something to do with my glasses. Certainly used High Beam a lot more when I did not wear them.
I admit I was surprised the HIDs were not much clearer.

Do all cars have two headlight settings! Mine does, but most cars don't seem to.

The reason I ask - in the small hours of this morning I drove from AK to HN. Once we got onto backroads that i know well, I began 'pressing on'. every car I caught up to was driving out on challenging and dark roads with dipped beam! Seriously - EVERY car failed to use high beam. One person would accelerate to 110 on straights then brake to 70 for curves because they clearly couldn't see! Car after car after car! Is this what the standard of NZ drivers has plummeted to!

bulzi, Jul 2, 9:19am
It's interesting that you can get your full drivers licence and still show almost no understanding of the extra functions your car has and how to use them correctly. Thanks for posting this, I fully agree. Also roundabouts people, please indicate properly when using them, ffs.

I drove to Tauranga and back in the weekend and found on way home, (Taupo-Napier Rd) I came across many that were on high beam and did not put down to low as they were oncoming to me. I was blinded! So much so that I had to slow down and then got abused from traffic behind me!Was not fair at all! Not to mention Honking their horn which gave me the biggest fright which could have done harm if I hadn't had slowed down in the 1st place. But great topic above, I think that every nz licence holder should re sit their Licence after they have occurred a crash or pulled over by police for reckless driving, you know the types of things guys.

fiatracer, Jul 2, 9:25am
which backs up my suspicion that many drivers think their lights are either ON or OFF, and that no other setting exists. I know someone [a migrant] who thought this until I set them straight.

tonyrockyhorror, Jul 2, 9:31am
Absolutely. At least after any crash where they were determined to be at fault and upon conviction for a serious offence even where disqualification is 12 months or less. Especially if they hit an inanimate object.

It's high time those that crash were treated with at least the same degree of inconvenience as those who are merely accused of certain offences and have a mandatory automatic 28-day driver's licence suspension.

auntysam77, Jul 2, 9:32am
Do you find that in dusk or dawn thatcars do not put on their lights at all! So how on earth are we to see them if it's foggy out there in the 1st place.
In Canada, their law is to have their light on full time ( low beam) when in use.
That's why we see quite a few cars with their lights on during the day.Not to mention vehicles that have programmed light on in some vehicles.

modie61, Jul 2, 12:04pm
When i sat my full licence test 1 month ago the testing guy made me use hi and low beam before we hit the road,i used to do wofs not so long ago and when you asked the owner or driver of the car to use hi beam they didnt know how to do it,i was amazed, usually they were women.

smac, Jul 2, 12:10pm
How on earth you think high beam helps you going into a corner I have no idea.

gemmigem, Jul 2, 12:12pm
Agree about the not turning them on , I thought that was an Oamaru thing ! , also the number of people who go walking/running at this time and insist on wearing black ! , do they want to get run down !
