I learned to drive with a dogleg ranger box, only did shortish trips 100-150km round trip max in it though with a 9000 liter tank on the back, butcher or not but I was able to shift a lot nicer not using the clutch apart form taking off. 1st if on a hill with a load 2nd on the flat with a load or 3rd on the flat with no load, the down split from 6th to fifth took the longest to get right as its quite a big jump in ratio. V8 twin turbo Hino motor.

i drive erf with roadranger and only use clutch to drive off. when ya want to stop just knock her out of gear.

Worst thing you can do to a Roadrange box, have a look at the cone,s in a stripped down one. The clutch is there for a reason.

This is the one I'm most familiar with - in an FL10. Easy gearbox to use - just a matter of practice and familiarity and remembering where you are in the sequence!

Hop into any truck with a Road Ranger and read the instructions on the shift pattern sticker, it will have one they need it for COF. Double de-clutching on the instructions so thats how its done. Also those who "jake shift" you need to read the instruction manual for CAT, DETROIT, and CUMMINS engines in the manual there is a whole page about NOT "jake shifting" the engine it states: "the timing gear on the end of the crank and camshaft will be blown off the shafts" As with alot of things regarding trucks, just because you can do it dosent mean you should. Some people should read the instructions before being let loose in a vehicle that costs more than the average house.

+1When I used to drive I was told by my boss that if he found anyone not using the clutch on his roadrangers they'd be sacked - the clutch is there for a reason he said.

there are no shortage of full syncromesh roadrangers on the road. A lot of the larger mitsi fire appliances use a 9 spd RR. No need to double clutch it changing up or down.
Your so right. Heros that think they are good drivers not using a clutch. Hard on gearbox and gear linkages.

Na Im not sure I havent driven a Eaton R/R cobra shift, and havnt spoken about it with anyone who has.Ive only driven a VOLVO auto which dont do that, so couldnt say. My quote was taken straight from the CAT engine operator manual, I read it myself,and Ive been told its in the DETROIT and CUMMINS manual by a diesel mechanic.

first ya say use clutch to change gear but now you are jake changing . so easy to flick jake switch off but then driversonly want to steer today . crappy auto gearboxes and crap they have now.

its easier if you learn in a kenworth or mack . the gear stick goes directly into the box so theres not so much play . jap trucks have linkages so its not quite so easy

1, No, I did,nt say that at all 2, you don,t use the clutch to change an auto in a Sterling, 3if you drive a bmc, you would,nt understand anyway.
