What! There isnt a bridge in NZ under 5.1m high without a sign on it on public roads. You dont need a pilot for up to 5m high unless you are over 3.1m wide and/ or overweight with bridge restrictions aswell.
You can move any load up to 5m high and under 3.1m wide and underweight without a piliot, dont even need the OVERSIZE signs for that just headlighs on and flags or hazard panels if over 2.5m wide.

re load up to 5m highand under 3.1 wide.No Pilot !

What if. (A ).that 5m high and under 3.1 wideload,was , say. 22 metres long !
Or.(B). if you had to cross the centre line to get under an overhead obstruction ! , ie, high side of a bridge or low wires etc!.!

Even when someone officially dressed turns up they usually fail to even consider obvious options to get traffic moving again.

We had a fatal accident on SH2 down the road from me a while back which was a real tragedy, don't get me wrong. But the highway was closed for most of the afternoon with the only bypass taking over an hour and thats if you even knew about it. (The traffic was just left to que with nothing on the radio and no one doing anything to walk the line of traffic and inform people of what was happening).

What annoyed me was there are perfectly flat paddocks with gates around the closed accident area. A knock on the farmers door and the offer of some compensation for the squashed grass would have saved a huge traffic mess that would have no doubt cost a heap in lost earnings and missed appointments.

Now you are just complicating things, of course if the truck is over 25m long or a foward distance of more than 11.5m then you need a long load piliot, or if you need to cross the centerline by more than 1.5m. I was going to mention that in my previous post but the POINT was you DONT NEED a pilot for 5m high alone as was previously suggested, then you came along and added some more oversize dimensions to complicate the load so a pilot woud be required, if its more than: 3.1 wide, 25m long total, 11.5 foward distance, 7m of overhang from center of the rear axle set, and/or over weight then pilot needed (and yes there are still more occasions Im aware of that one is needed) BUT BUT BUT if its 5m high alone as the ONLY excess dimension you dont need a pilot.

that was a good effort that one took a year to repair. The truck driver did not have the boom folded correctly.

Same thing happened several years ago on the Clutha River bridge through Alexandra. Several heights signs on the bridge now.

i heard they did exactly the same under Waikanae, a few days before this got hit last week.

Tirau rail overbridge on SH 1 is 4.84m high north and south, so 6 inches ( 15cm) would have absolutley no effect whatsoever on standard height (4.25m) trucks. All the signs when installed had 10cm clearnce from the actual height. Google map street view it if you dont belive me the signs are 100m before the bridge north and south, just not on the bridge. Not trying to be a smartrze just presenting the facts as they are.
