Funny you say that. I noticed the one a Tirau didn't in the weekend. I'm sure it used to. Perhaps it's only if they are lower than the max height allowed on the road.

Some time back, (if my memory serves me right) there was a legal wrangle, somewhere in the South Island ,when a truck hit a low bridge ,that had no height posted. I don`t think it was even a named road, just a metal road that went along the river side and under the bridge. I think the truck company put up a good argument, and from that incident, a Transit NZpolicy was developedto signpost all bridges. They clearly haven`t , because there are a few that don`t have height signs .even on State Highways.

Heard they put 6 inches of seal under the Tirau one and caused the trucks to start smashing their tops off so they had to cut it out again.

Was that the huge digger jammed under the SH1 bridge over the Waimakariri just before Chch a few years ago! That was a beaut - they now have the biggest signs & height awareness poles there Ive ever seen Ha ha

They should but then the truckie who hit them should also do their homework before setting off.

Many don't but they are gazetted and available through NZTA. Last nights mishap was a bit of a mess. One very ruined Scania. On a whole other subject, how did you get on with the "no go" V8

Cheers berg,it goes now, dont know why it didnt before, went out to it after dinner last night and turned the key,it slowly turned over and away it went.
They usually dont need signs if they are over 5.1m high anything under must be signposted, once a load goes over 5m high on a truck you need another special permit to move the load, I did a couple of 5.3m high loads last week and had a special single trip permit for them, designated route only. I think they have now introduced a rule that all new bridges built must be over 5.2m high on State Highways. This allows 100mm tolerences as all the signs have. In the article above the truck would have had another curtain side truck loaded onto it so total height 4.25 for curtainsider plus 1m deck height transporter =5.25 and that bridge is only 5.05m high, Ive been under numerous times at 5m and its so close its not funny.

that bridge has a bypass on the west side of it and only would have taken a key or boltcutters to get traffic going straight away. I wonder if the powers that be allowed that to happen or did the usual snarl-up happen till someone officially dressed turned up.

lol.
long story short.
Cop: Get ya truck stuck mate! Truckie: nah mate was moving this here bridge and i ran outta gas.

In the local rag today the driver of the first truck, that hit the overpass said his load was 4.96,i thought the maximum height was 4.25 ! I like the pic of him with the remains of his load,he looks even proud.Lol.

I have taken 5.00m exactly numerous times under that bridge and it didnt hit it but was faken close. The last load was a container high stacker forklift with the lift mast removed, we had to pull all the lights off the top of the cab to get it to 5m high when loaded. Maby the driver of truck in question didnt check the height on level ground! Yes legal height is 4.25 for trucks (box bodys are built to 4.2 usually) but transporters with deck height of 1m or less, (most are 800mm to 900mm and 1m would be a higher deck) can go over this if it is "indivisable" and can not be reduced in height such as machinery. Any load that is "divisable" inother words, more than 1 item stacked up, can not be over 4.25m. Post #2 Tirau should have a sign its only 4.85m it useto have one.

The pedsetrian bride at Belmont (lower Hutt ) caught out few trucks , it sloped down toward theside & if he wasbit to highcollected it if he was in left lane .Trans NZ finallyincreased itsheight afterabout 6hits .

Any bridge over 4.5m doesn't need to display a height sign. (which is bloody stupid, all bridges should display height signs) Trucks normal height is a maximum of 4.25m, Over that it's an oversize load. Anything 4.5m and over needs a permit and load pilots.
But their was another incident where the bridge received major damage when a digger on the back of a truck went under the bridge.

Then of course there is the rail overbridge near National park, that has a sign on it, costing NZTA how many hundreds of dollar! that says "clearance 8.9 metres" . What a waste of taxpayers money!
