Out of interest . what are your thoughts on these two! How well do those 304's actually go and what are they like on gasoline!

gadgit3, Aug 8, 7:35pm
1UZ is lighter being all alloy and bolt on power is not an issue being 6 bolt mains the standed internals are good for a few. Runs a cambelt though.
304 ya got a 1000cc's more to feed.
Both engines sound the same with a decent exhaust.

guider1, Aug 8, 7:41pm
Depends what you're after. an alloy multi-cam multi-valve Jap V8 or a pushrod Holden V8.
To me it would depend on what it was going into really.

trader_84, Aug 8, 7:47pm
I'm still looking at engine options for my 57' Pickup. I refuse to pay the premium asked by Ls1 sellers so are looking . basically at these ones; 304, 1UZ, VH45 . and still considering a 6.2 diesel, lol! (To each their own) Yeah . so what do you reckon! The truck is an everyday vehicle that will be required to tow everyso often.

phillip.weston, Aug 8, 7:52pm
The VH45 is a nice bit of kit with wide angle heads, but the factory inlet manifold just looks like crap. The 1UZ is perhaps the nicer looking of the two engines.

trader_84, Aug 8, 7:55pm
Yeah, I sorta thought that too . like a spider squatting on top of your motor, lol!

gadgit3, Aug 8, 8:04pm
57' pickup. that would be 3UZ you'd be looking for same weight and dimensions of the 1UZ but 300cc bigger and 100 horses better off

gadgit3, Aug 8, 8:27pm
Looking at the specs the 304 is only 180kw for all of it's 5000cc
Were as the 1UZ is 197kw for it's 4000cc
mmm interesting stuff
Real time now tho lol the 304 has alot more toque come on down low in the rev range where as the 1uz loves to rev. food for thought. Can't complain about the power of my 1UZ powered Hiace with a 17ft GoP boat on the rear tho.

1uz have weak cams

crank is good for 600 horse

youur going to pay a premium for a 3uz

similarly , vh41's are a lot cheaper than vh45's - either are good strong v8stho

gadgit3, Aug 8, 8:41pm
Weak in what way! design or strength!

wrong2, Aug 8, 8:44pm
big gains to be had from better grinds

standard grinds are for soft, economical rubber band power

comment not strength related

gadgit3, Aug 8, 8:48pm
Yip can agree with that comment then with alot of the power coming on when it's higher in the rev range.

tshop, Aug 8, 10:19pm
WTF cams are perfect at road speed they dont have any rockers or push rods attached 90deg bank revs like a scolded cat.

trader_84, Aug 9, 7:11am
What are the automatic transmissions like that come out behind each engine type in terms of strength! Anyone know! The only experience I have had with a late model trans was a L460E behind a 6.2 diesel in a 93' 4x4 Xtra Cab GMC. It chewed through 2 transmissions over 12 years. Both after heavy towing stints. The talk on the US message boards is that the weak link was the engine and trans in that era of trucks . specifically - too much truck for that size trans. But what about the jap ones! And the one behind the Holden engine.

gadgit3, Aug 9, 10:58am
Well the auto behind the 304 must be all good as there are plenty of them towing large trailers round with plenty of KMs on the clock.
The LS400 trans I can't say I have seen an issue with but never seen one tow big weights as the suspension in the car was just not up to the towing job but the car is 1800kg and the gen 3 LS430 is over 2000kg without people sitting in it so they haul a bit round.

2get1, Aug 9, 11:49am
go the lexus 3UZ slightly more cc, mor epower than the 1UZ CVVT and dual intake runners, trans I would go straight to a R154 supra 5 speed unless you really want an auto inwhich case the stock ones seem to be fine. A little head porting work, some decent aftermarket cams and replace the log manifolds with headers will really wake the 3UZ up.

Iused to tow abit with mine in a double cab hilux, tandem car trailer with 1000kg car on it. Tow hard as in 110km/h and pass most everything and the worst economey I could get it to do was 18MPG. Drive it nice without a load and it could top 30MPG.

tshop, Aug 9, 2:16pm
They rock bro at hyway speed the mainshaft only is engaged, no drag of a torque converter to be seen.

tshop, Aug 9, 2:18pm
No comparision to my previous mentioned feature of the Toyota.

tshop, Aug 9, 3:02pm
Nah your talkn wikipedia stuff bro, talk to anyone who owns one & they'll blow your mind nicely of course, sorry to burst the bubble but NAH!

guider1, Aug 9, 3:54pm
Forget the 6.2 diesel!

What is your budget & that will determine what you will end up with.

2get1, Aug 9, 6:56pm
WTF are you on about I owned and drove one for probably 5 years only sold it last year.

gadgit3, Aug 9, 7:12pm
I think you need to reread alot of the posts in this thread cause your just not making much sense at all.

Whats up with the comment on 2get1! he's prazing the engine then you call him out on putting it down! WTF

BTW also an owner of a Hiace powered by a 1UZ

tshop, Aug 9, 7:59pm
The most silliest conversion I could think of.

tshop, Aug 9, 8:05pm
As if was any good youd still have it.

tshop, Aug 9, 8:28pm
Get rid of roller rocker & pushrod rubbish, go dohc qohc etc, end of story.
