Well it's happened 1KZ head's let go.

No warnings, no overheating. It was turned off and didn't want to start again, just made heaps of white vapour from the unburnt diesel because of the water present in combustion chambers. Also pressurised the radiator and blew the coolant out even though it wasn't overheating.
Picking up the new head ready to bolt on from Repco in the morning. Comes with cam and valves fitted.

mugenb20b, Aug 6, 5:28pm
Yes, they can "let go", but that happens after a long period insufficient cooling. The cooling system needs to ge 101% at all times. Most common faults are blocked radiator and stuffed viscous fan. How many k's has your one done!

gadgit3, Aug 6, 5:54pm
Get that radiator rodded out rob. The KZ will run showing normal temp on the gauge with a 70% blocked radiator and if I was a betting man I would put a few on over 50% of your radiator blocked.

rob_man, Aug 6, 6:40pm
It's done 200k and it's had the radiator done already, there has been no sign of getting hot and I keep an eye on the coolant. Viscous fan will get a good looking at.
I wasn't expecting this but I guess we'll know the heads good for another few years now.

Mine done it a couple of weeks ago as well. 325km. With the benefit of hindsight I should have dropped to it sooner. It had an ugly knock in it on dead cold start up that no one could positively identify. Seems that, for the last couple of years it has been dribbling a small amount of water into no 3. As I only use it at the weekends, I never missed the water from the bottle. I have done a few of these over the last couple of years the lowest one being 98km. They were all (4 of them) non intercooled, making me believe that the intercooler was the difference. That is now out the window as mine is intercooled. The only good thing about it all is that the price of scrap alloy is not bad just now!

trader_84, Aug 6, 9:21pm
Wheres r15! Hey another one of your favorite engines has shit itself, I said in another thread these were suspect engines. My 2.8 3L is still going strong, lol!

zephyrheaven, Aug 7, 3:21am
Mine too - 507,000kms just rolled over

Agree with gagit re radiator - get the biggest one you can squeeze in! Toyota built that radiator to cool the engine, not the 40Ft bayliner behind it ha ha

rob_man, Aug 9, 7:52pm
Picked it up tonight from the garage, relatively painless apart from the money side of things.
The replacement kit by Kiwi Cylinder Heads comes with a ready to use head with cam and valves all set and ready to go and saves heaps of labour.
The old head must have been cracked for a long time, between the valve seats on every cylinder. There's no way they all cracked at the same time out of the blue.

studio1, Aug 9, 8:07pm
Is it a turbo, ie a 1KZ-T! Common problem with them cracking heads in addition to poor cooling is the exhaust is too small, not allowing heat to escape the turbo sufficiently. Upsize the exhaust and never have that problem again.

rob_man, Aug 9, 8:08pm
Hmmmm, could be something in that.

trader_84, Aug 10, 5:53am
There's one sitting around the back in a KZN130 with a R151 behind it. It was supposed to have been rebuilt but dunno. The head is/looks new though. The guy I got it off pointed out that he had fitted a 3" pipe or something from the turbo back for a couple of feet (seen the pipe but dunno how long it is - haven't really had a good look) saying these things needed them for more power and longevity issues. Just rings a bell after reading that comment above.

trader_84, Aug 10, 6:00am
If you don't mind me asking . whats a ball park figure someone could expect to be charged for getting one of these things fixed up like you did! Not being nosey . just want to have a known baseline for if mine ever blows its arse and I want to get it fixed at a garage.

r15, Aug 10, 6:42am
here i am.
alloy doesnt crack 'out of the blue' , it has to get hot first.

a lot of toyota's temp gauges will show normal for a huge range of temperatures, modifying toyota guages is well documented on the internet to get more accurate reasons.

i too would put money on the radiator being blocked or the fan not working as it should.

trader_84, Aug 10, 7:11am
All talk, reasons and bullshit aside . they seem to have a propensity to shit themselves on a regular basis, aye! And in spectacular fashion too, I might add. I might arrive 5 mins later than you in the 2.8 but I don't have any nagging little doubts in the back of my mind about fans, radiators and any other friggin excuse the engine could use to shit itself. 4JH1TC . now theres a motor! Way stronger head and direct injection. Get me one of them and I'll swap you the 1KZ sitting in the back paddock so you've got spares for when (not if) you need them, lol!

r15, Aug 10, 9:49am
correct. yes they do have a tendancy to shit themselves. because they are easy to overheat if their systems are not working as they should - just like any other engine.

however these engines do have a tendancy of having malfunctioning components of cooling systems.so yes that in turn is the problem.

moral of the story is if you maintain your gear, (not just oil changes) whatever it is, it will look after you a whole lot better

lk104, Aug 10, 12:07pm
Good luck with Kiwi Heads, they are like tissue paper, should have Genuine for not much more in price.

rob_man, Aug 10, 2:04pm
Where are they made do you know!
As for all the other issues regarding radiator and fan, I'll have to trust the garage and take their word that everything looked fine.

lk104, Aug 10, 2:19pm
They are made in China

rob_man, Aug 10, 2:45pm
Figured they must be, that's a relief.

trader_84, Aug 10, 3:22pm
Rob, re my earlier request . whats ball park for the damage!

rob_man, Aug 10, 3:42pm
Haven't got the labour bill yet but with me getting the best trade price from Repco for the parts I'm guessing it will come out at $2500ish.

happylad3, Aug 10, 3:59pm
At work, we have had a LOT of 1kz heads crack. We used to do around 2-3 2L and 3L heads a month die to cracking. But they have slowed down, and a lot of 1KZ head are now the work. Every single one of them (bar 2 I think) are kiwi heads, and we have had no issues with them being faulty. Or prone to early failure again. Also do a lot of Ford/Mazda 2.5L WL heads. We buy bare heads. And swap the good parts over.

OP, you do know that there is actually 2 types of 1KZ head! There's a long and a short valve model. For your sake I hope you got the right one!

bubbles52, Aug 10, 4:02pm
Never come across a cracked 3L head, the 3L is the most reliable toyota diesel you can get.

rob_man, Aug 10, 4:11pm
I ordered it off the chassis number and it's fitted and running fine. What would be the problem if it's the wrong one!

happylad3, Aug 10, 4:37pm
not 100% sure on this, but i think it only matters if you use long valves in a short valve head and vise versa, because of the installed height, and the valve to cam distance etc. but dont quote me on that.
