Actually F P .Check the fluid level-overfill it by a litre-and see if it fixes the slipping-K

cheers mate, but this one's just had the trans serviced, mainly to ensure it had the right level of oil in it. Unless the shop have screwed up badly. Hmm, over fill it.Gotta be worth a shot. Will add a liter or more to her and see if it makes a diff. will get back to you and let you know how it goes. cheers for that mate.

Bloody brilliant idea. Shame there wasnt a paddock near by. Would be fun to see if I could kill it.

Stick with your fiat multipla's

Ford in that era extended trans service intervals to match Holden who had beefed up their trannys. Falcons should be serviced and flushed at 80k kms or what youre experiencing is the result every Repco and ford agent in OZ was knee deep in tranny clutch packs due to that trick best of luck

I have an auto bid to $10.50 + rabbit +cat, so nobody else should even bother to try.Plus I've owned a Fairmont before ! (admittedly a 73, so slightly older).

Yep selling at a low price with full revelations is the best way to go. You might be suprised at somepeople who might go for achallenge, or even have a spare trans available. You might even get a bidding war. And you will sleep better at night knowing that 1: Its gone and 2: nobody's going to get back at you for selling a dud. Peace of mind is its own reward

dr.doolittle, I see you are in 'Auckland' so may be on the other side of the brdige - so probably too far for this Fairmont to travel.

Thanks snoop, my Surf has started to slip when cold & I've had it serviced to see if it fixes the problem but to no avail. I'll try your little trick, thanks! Nothing to lose really.

On a more serious note (as above), if I was selling I would be honest.I can't imagine it is actually too hard to replace the trans.I did it in my 73 Fairmont, probably not that different even now.At least not FWD!

i would buy it, i have a spare trans in my 1997 falcon panelvan. Over a couple of beers tonight we have decided that the panelvan will be a good recipient for my 351 cleveland. keen to have a look.

4 Speed Auto! I'd overhaul it for a lot less then that :P Have done enough of them I can almost do them with my eyes closed!
In reality, it is probably only a band or clutch that's starting to go and the part is relatively cheap. Thing is, generally while its all apart you would replace anything else that is worn, all gaskets, seals etc.
Only slipping in first, could also be something minor like a shift solenoid, blocked trans filter (Most places will run a trans flush or replace fluid but not actually the filter as well). I'd check to see if theres any codes or anything logged on it first.
I'd say it'd still be worth 2-3g if everything else is good. They are a great trusty old car that still relatively hold their value. Still sell for 5-6g for a tidy example from car yards etc
