The guy that ripped into me after I'd drilled holes for the Zephyr badge in the new right rear guard of his restored MKII - he said the two vertical holes were at the front on the left guard, and I had drilled them at the back on the right.

Or when you don't work at the shop and someone starts describing what they're looking for asking "Do you sell those!".A deadpan "Lady, I don't work here" usually does the trick, hilarious!

I work at a Locksmiths with "KEYS CUT HERE" signs and key logos everywhere. "Excuse me, do you cut keys here!". Um, Hello! "Oh, only on Thursdays, you'll have to come back tomorrow. Sorry."

These will run with no water, they alternate what cylinder fires to reduce heat so it doesn't seize, designed to get back from the outback, our resident Ford men (ed) may know more about it.

we had a guy that said that his starter motor was working, it just clicks when you turn it over, we went and checked on it, went back to him saying "you got good news and bad news, good news your starters ok", "whats the bad news", "your engines siezed" haha

I work at a Ford Dealer and they won't run forever without water. It is a save to get you back to the workshop/town etc but still the risk of damage is pretty high. It prevents damage to the block and cyl heads, but thats not all that heat/no water affects.

Worked for a Panel n Paint outfit years ago. Had a Island couple come in for a quote to panel n paint their car. Got talking to them about it, talk to them about the re paint, then the Island woman said, 'Will it have any brush marks in it'.

The worst ones are the know it all backyard mechanics who, when asked for a chasis # or engine #, say, "What do you need to know that for, they're all the same."

My mother in law was trying to describe my car (had a bluebird back then) to a mechanic and ended up calling it a ' you know one of those thunderbird things'. I haven't laughed so hard in ages and she wasn't amused.

Ok now I have a pearler for you. Customer purchased a XXXX XXXX (reputable brand and model) from us three months ago. Called in regarding warranty repairs on their gearbox. Asked to describe their simptoms they tell me its started really revving high when on the motorway. I walk out to the car, push the overdrive button back in and tell them its all fixed. They actually diddn't believe me till they drove back home.

The Paint and Panel shops probably do leave brush marks in the paint 'back home'.

I have seen microscopic photos of bearing surfaces where they flitered the oil with every pass & photos where they only filtered 30% of each pass. The difference was huge, expotentialy huge. Now I know why modern cars can do 500,000Kms on a single engine & why older cars needed reringing every 50,000 miles.

or parts people that want to know rego number for your car after you have told them that the motor didin't come out of that car. Then get high and mighty and trying to tell you your car doesn't have one of those. (i'm looking at it you mooron)

Yeah, I have to have some random AE101 number plate memorised, so that "they" can look up 4AGE silvertop parts.
mrfxit,
Aug 27, 7:32am
LOL yea sure . but in a lot of cases YES the parts ARE the same. Different brand or model numbers but are still the same part. Good grief, sometimes they change the color
I .HATE. book mechanics & book parts ppl that can ONLY think with model numbers . OH NO, if the exactnumbers not in the book , then we don't have the part.
Eg: imported 92 toyota Delta Wide hightop van WAS in fact built by Daihatsu.as a "Daihatsu.Delta Wide" van on licence by Toyota but used Daihatsu. part numbers Toyota also built the same exact van & used toyota part numbers. Neither franchise in NZ could supply parts based on part numbers.
Been there DONE THAT
mrfxit,
Aug 27, 7:35am
LOL yea been there done that a few times. Taught by the book, never touched an oily rag before, never mind worked on cars "for real"
jason_247,

the ones that get me are for example
"hi id like some brake pads for my car" "what sort of car is it" "im not sure" "is your car outside" "yup" *walk outside "can you pop your bonnet!" *pops bonnet then while writing down chassis number etc "oh the pads arent for this car"
WHY THE F*** DO YOU THINK I WOULD WANT TO SEE YOUR CAR
the other one is your know it mechanics "hey can you give me a price for a tie rod end/ ball joint/ gasket set!" "what sort of car is it for" "nah nah nah bro just give me a price for a standard one"
worst outcome is a guy threatened to go to fair go about us ripping him off, he came in and said how much for rotors for a "normal 2004 v8 commie
we told him they were $90 odd each he then came in and we discovered it was an hsv r8 with rotors that retail for around $1100 each, dude lost the plot and demanded we sell him $2200 worth of parts for $180
jason_247,

ive seen people turn customers away because we didnt have for example a 6pk2230 belt, if they had any intelligence they would have seen we stock a 6pk2220 which have been perfectly fine for the job
mrfxit,
Aug 27, 7:38am
Model size/ shape & year . for .Model size/ shape & year you can't swap the motor or most other parts from a mazda to a ford because they have different part numbers

If it walks like a duck / looks like a duck & sounds like a duck. then most days it's not going to be a stunted swan
mrfxit,
Aug 27, 7:55am
LMAo yea like a rego or chassis number was going to do me any good on the Sunbird I had with it's 186 6cyl / toyota gearbox / torana diff & aftermarket shocks
mrfxit,
Aug 27, 7:58am
LOL yea seen that many times before & been caught out on that myself late at night half asleep on long trips, flicked the switch & forgot about it once back on the open road.
bjdw,

Parts people should always try to get an engine code or chasis number rather than relying on Carjam, which is incomplete and full of typos.
bjdw,
Aug 27, 2:05pm
It's all about liability. If I get a part number from a catalouge using the vehicle details and something turns to shit and an engine gets fried then the liability is on the supplier who made the catalouge. If I give you something that is the same but is not listed in a catalouge and it turns to shit and an engine gets fried the liability is on me.

Is a catalouge a sled with two runners!
