If I drive just over 50kph it sound like I am running over train tracks does this sound like my wheel bearings have had it! Is there a sure way to tell inside or outside!

bopbargains, Aug 27, 5:37pm
it sounds like there might be something wrong with your car

jay.da, Aug 27, 5:38pm
I'd say there's alot of things wrong with it.

zak410, Aug 27, 5:54pm
jack you wheels, rotate to check you tyres first.

m16d, Aug 27, 5:56pm
wind up.
Nobody drives on train tracks. do they.!

gadgit3, Aug 27, 6:15pm
Cant hear it sorry. Might have something wrong with my sound card maybe!

mechnificent, Aug 27, 6:50pm
Tyre problem.

mechnificent, Aug 27, 6:51pm
If it's just started, if you haven't had a nasty rumbling noise for a while, worse when you turn. then it will be a tyre.
if you had the other symptoms them maybe a wheel bearing.

mechnificent, Aug 27, 6:54pm
Feel for bumps by rubbing your hands over the tyres. Or, jack it up a few inches, put a block of wood or anything really near a tyre and rotate the wheel watching the gap between tyre and block.

satanschill, Aug 27, 6:58pm
It could be wheel bearings when you have the car jacked up try to "pull" the tyre towards you from the bottom and the top and if there is a significant move then it is bearings.

mechnificent, Aug 27, 7:01pm
If the sound isn't at the speed the wheel rotates at(stick a hunk of duct tape on a tyre and drive to find out how fast a wheel turns), then it could be a driveshaft universal, or perhaps an inner cv joint. .

mechnificent, Aug 27, 7:02pm
To make the noise I reckon the wheel bearings would have to be square already. and he'd have figured it.

morrisman1, Aug 27, 7:02pm
Id be checking my wheel nuts first

mechnificent, Aug 27, 7:07pm
They are noisier at slow speeds aren't they!

carstauranga001, Aug 27, 7:20pm
I think the nut between the steering wheel and the drivers seat is the problem here.

carstauranga001, Aug 27, 7:23pm
Seriousely, how about getting a mechanic to take it for a drive. Most workshops will give you a diagnosis and quote for free.

jay.da, Aug 27, 7:48pm
cheers ill try some of the above tomorrow

mechnificent, Aug 27, 7:55pm
When you drive it take note of the speed compared to a wheel. If it's a lot fasser than a wheel it could be rear wheel driveshaft or gearbox. take note of what the sound is like. metalic clack or knock, dull thud of tyre on ground, does it sound external and clear or muffled and like it could be inside a case, like a gearbox say.
Every bit of detail helps.

mechnificent, Aug 27, 7:55pm
Does the noise get louder as you corner hard, or throttle on or off, is it in all gears!

ml6989, Aug 27, 8:20pm
You might be falling asleep. Are you sure you are not running along the "rumble strip" on the side of the road. Check you location in the carrige way!

mechnificent, Aug 27, 8:58pm
Nah, that doesn't sound like railway tracks.

Don't people drive the tracks any more!

i-n-horz, Aug 28, 6:35am
Can you feel any vibes throught the car in unison with the sound!
Pop your head out the window as you go along if it's to do with the wheels there's a chance you'll be able to pick up which one it is,get someone else to drive and you do the other side.
If your think it's a bearing jack the car up and spin the wheels,to be making a noise like that you'll definitely hear something from the worn bearing.

mechnificent, Aug 28, 8:54am
I reckon it is going to be a rear wheel drive with a buggered universal joint.
Wild guess based on the customes description.

jay.da, Aug 28, 4:09pm
Well I tried the push, pull on the wheel looks like the front wheel bearings gone in it, but as others say it also could be other problems aswell, Car in question is a 65 Triumph 2000. I'll fix this and see from there.
Thanks again.

mechnificent, Aug 28, 5:26pm
Ok, those can be adjusted, it may not be the noise.
If the car makes the noise you described the noise should have been really bad as you cornered.
Those bearings can be adjusted so you should do that and spin the wheel to see if the bearing makes a noise.
