ignorance but what plugs on the back of what plates! haha, just cant think of what youz are talking about

ct9a, May 13, 3:50pm
brake backing plate has inspection hole on some vehicles to veiw lining thickness

rpvr, May 13, 5:23pm
Yes, on my Starlet you can actually get a screwdriver onto the little starred wheel through this hole to back the adjuster off of you have trouble getting the drum off, which can happen if the drums are worn and have a lip.

xr6turbo2, May 13, 5:55pm
whats all the fuss about,if you do your inspection correctly,by the book ,you wont have a problem. You are checking cars forthe saftey of the driver and the public!

franc123, May 13, 6:32pm
Of course, but if you are not an AVI and never had an NZTA audit before you have no idea what some of the reviewers can be like, they often pick on very obscure aspects of the VIRM that are not common fail points. Some guys are fairly reasonable but others are typical Govt department gnomes who stick to regulations very vigorously. When you are completing the technical component of the review (the inspection) you have to explain everything you are checking and what you are checking for.Have a flick through the VIRM at the "reasons for rejection" and you will realise that there is a thousand reasons why a vehicle could fail, even those of us with good memories can leave an item or two out.

Exactly all humans can make mistake and the thing is every audit brings up a new change that no one has heard of. Not to mention factoring in every car some cars some xx play is fine but other its not, there sure is a lot more to it.

zephyrheaven, May 13, 7:59pm
franc do you get chris most times! He is good to deal with - always learn a bit from him myself
as far as glazing goes, ever remember those few nissan and mazda people mover shared things that snuck thru with plastic rear quarter windows from new! Strange things I remember even with a meager decade in the trade

Mines coming up, I must have the filthiest VIRM in canterbury I reckon - Im like a lawyer, open book lol

im_andrew, May 13, 8:09pm
Yeah but imagine what it would be like without etchings being checked as part of a wof/cof inspection. Every bugger would be driving his old POS about with coffee table glass for a windscreen

franc123, May 13, 8:13pm
I don't think so, theres not many cars that can accomodate perfectly flat glass for a windscreen, old Landrovers and those late '80s Isuzu Bighorn/Trooper things come to mind but thats all.

johnf_456, May 13, 8:15pm
Good luck fitting it, is all I can say finding a car that can fit!

franc123, May 13, 8:20pm
No, never had a Chris, the last guy we had two years ago was Brent Downes who was a pretty good guy and next week we've got Murray someone doing it.

snoopy221, May 13, 8:24pm
MM JUST A NOTE HERE RE GLAZING I.D
THERE HAVE BEEN CHANGES IN CONSTRUCTION AND LATER WINDSCREEN a PILLARS CAN not TAKE SIDE LOADING.
Front screens have a year and date hereby they have to be laminated-and not safety glass.

Any OLDERAVIC who recalls the mazda being T Boned and the windscreen imploding and killing the 5yr old in the back seat will understand WHY glazing I D i s important

im_andrew, May 13, 8:33pm
I know some very clever glass guys who quite often will replace curved screens (on busses) with flat screens if no curved one is available.

L300s would be an easy one, to start with

thejazzpianoma, May 13, 8:34pm
Fiat Panda, all glazing is completely flat. $12 Glass cutter and you are in business!

franc123, May 13, 8:34pm
Yeah we know, it was mid 1986 from memory when it was compulsory for laminated to replace the old toughened or armourfloat style screen.I did have a reminder of this at the last MTA update course I did, the concern was with cars made in that era having second hand screens fitted from say an '85 model car being fitted into the same body style '87 model which is of course technically illegal.

xr6turbo2, May 14, 2:08am
I have carried out wof inspections for 22 years,Now workingin on aircraft, try there audits!.no difference ,all about safety at the end of the day!

johnf_456, May 14, 7:35am
Do you work for airnz by any chance! You sound like someone my father may know who is an ex mechanic working on planes.

zephyrheaven, Jul 29, 11:26am
What was Murray like Franc - got him next month eek

dent, Jul 31, 10:36am
We get chris here in nelson zephyr good guy.

franc123, Jul 31, 4:42pm
Sorry Zeph hadn't seen this one pop back up again. He was fine,do make sure all your PRS files re staff and training records, VIRM updates look good.We got a 3.0 without too much trouble so very pleased with that, do ensure the smoke test is done and you do the pressure test on the brake lines. We did however have the dreaded random call last year where I got a tap on the shoulderabout making failure reasons look too much like a work order.Apparantly you have to come across in a non threatening manner and not make suggestions about how to repair things, just tell them whats wrong.

zephyrheaven, Jul 31, 5:12pm
Cheers, Im the only AVI at work so makes it a bit tough running everything - ugh, makes life very stressful at test time I dont know why I worry so much - have always enjoyed Chris, really nice bloke whom I always end up having a good chat to
Im sure I will be fine, but must look at doing some of these WOF update evenings
Thanks Franc
