It was car dealers making fortunes I was refering to. Right now is one of the toughest times in used cars dealers have dealt with in a long time. There is short supply and every man and his dog thinks they are dealers on trade me.

Apsolutely no need to apologise-That is the perfect example for the OP Given the OP is in dauckland she can choose to buy a car from wellington. They do need to add about $500 to the price as transport costs but its a 2004 car OR she can buy privatelyand get a year 2005 car with lower milage. There is no comeback if something goes wrong though. Or buy locally using the two other cars as examples why the price should be discounted. Incidently all three examples are mechanically identical

Yet the number of cars on our roads has only increased at the same rate our adult population has increased by. The number of cars leaving our roadsis almost exactly the same as the number being imported-either new or second hand.-This information is readily available via statistics nz -It pays to check your fact before spouting

no its more to do with the fact that everyone just expects the car dealer to offer a discount but they wouldnt dare tr a similar stunt at a petrol station or mc ds or pak n sav. really what they should do is judge each car on its own merits and make a decsion from there

I am sure there are dealers out there that run at very slim margins, and offer their cars at the best prices. They will not be in a position to offer a 'discount' just because somebody thinks it's the done thing.
However there are also plenty of dealers that for reasons known only to themselves have stock languishing on their yards, well overpriced. Maybe they are expecting people to walk in and offer them less, dunno.don't know and don't care.
The point is, the latter breed are the reason the former breed get asked for a discount. People can't tell the difference from the gate.
Everybody knows you can buy the exact same items for less money at PakNSave than you can at Countdown. But at one place you get better surroundings and supposedly better service.
I am sure car dealers are the same, however the difficultly is that without well known brand names plastered across the door, the punters can't tell the difference between a dealer who charges more because they offer better service, and one that is taking the piss.

Most every big $$ purchase these days is open to negotiation. NZ is awash with second hand vehicles .shop around and pay only what you are happy paying.

I once offered full price on a bike from shop in wellington. They seen my near new trade we agreed on price etc. So I say yep deal done then they say I have to pay for shipment of both bikes!Um no.Anyway deal over.Month later they discount same bike by 2k so by not paying frieght on there bike they lost $1500. I can never figure that out, why dealers wont move there and then, then heavly discount later.] and loose more.

Always ask.Learnt this working for a building supply company. These days prices vary and often they can discount. 12 years ago looking at cars - was phoned back and offered 3k off a small car!No, didnt have air cond. Was interesting that walked away then got the offer. This year - well I asked and I got 1k off the price.I thought the price was a little on the high side. The bonus of purchasing through a good dealer is a quality car and you can go back with any problems.

Theres all the bs answers to that and then theres the truth. Reality is that dealers are people and people make mistakes. I must say though on a car I know darn well I can't replace easilly Im less flexible that something I can replace withg a similar car really easilly

First loss is your best loss. You usually learn this the hard way.

Hmmm, we found a nice car at a dealers, took it for a decent drive, checked it out thoroughly, and asked how negotiable they were on the 25990 window price. "Um, well actually, that will be 29990, we put the wrong price on the window".Couldn't give the window price. This made us quite cross, but what can you do! - I didn't think the car was quite worth 25990 anyway, so left them to it.

Correct, most of them are money hungy pigs anyway. I asked for a deal when I brought my 05 V8 Fairmont that had been for sale for about four months for cash, the dealer said he was not intrested and would rather sell it for finance - sad really
