when buying a second hand vehicle these days from a dealerand paying cash. I heard most car dealers don't discount as they prefer finance is this right!.

depends is the advertised price is reasonable, how much the car is worth etc. i would try getting 1-2k off the advertised price.

Know what the vehicle you are interested in buying is worth.
Otherwise clutch at straws.

If they wont give you a discount for cash go to another dealer plenty of them about not so many buyers anymore. Times are tough cash talks

So if the car fits the bill and is already cheaper than competing cars. You would just walk away because the dealer won't discount.!

Look kitkat Im sorry to sound harsh but you are thinking totally wrong. (Ive said this a few times before) YOU need to do some work. TM is as good a place as any to look to get an idea of the price range of the model you are interested in. With that info you will already have a clear idea of where a particular car sits price wise compared to similar vehicles. If its right at the bottom end price wise don't be suprised if you get no discount. Right at the top and unless its something exceptional then expect to be able to get a discount to somewhere in the middle of the price range. You getthe idea! ALL THAT SAID-- if you don't ask you don't getso always offer at least a bit off of the price asked. -NOTE I said offer. If the car is say $5000 then offer for example--$4500 Make it clear you are a serious buyer and this is a cash offer to buy.

My subaru was on a lot for $14k and with cash they moved to $12k

You see that's the thing. If the window price was a couple of grand over anyway Joe public will feel like he has gotten a good deal when he gets that same couple of grand back for offering 'cash'
What else was he going to buy it with.camels, milk bottle tops, dope!

I know exactly what kazbanz is saying , as I own a cycle shop with low prices , yet people STILL think I must have a 500% margin , and will buy one from somewhere offering "30% off" when their "orig. rrp" was unrealistic in the 1st place !People are stuck on just getting a huge discount from the marked price , don't shop around to see what the item may be actually WORTH , then complain to Commerce Com. about getting "ripped off" !

I had done homework and the best price was 11k private sale and any i could find had been modified so i was happy getting this one from a car yard for 12k.

what you are SAYINGis always expect a discount. You may have meant something else---if so then try saying it
splinter67,
Aug 10, 2:38pm
No Im not saying that at all If I went to a car dealer and they wanted 11k for a car and I made a reasonable offer say 10k I would expect the dealer to try and negotiate with menot try and give me some car dealer bs that he was making no money on the deal if not I would walk away and find a dealer who wanted to sell a car

you do actually read what you type before you type it dont you! In one breath you are saying no not at all then in the next you are saying you would go elsewhere if you weren't given a discount. Ill try again--so you are saying ALWAYSexpect a discount!
Hmm -so the car is the cheapest in town and you know it but because the dealer tells the truth -that there is no more room to negotiate on that price you would walk away. The guys at enterprise cars must love you.--Yep we'll give you 5k for your trade in or cash back.Just don't look too close at the actual ammount you are paying for the car

Yea, even the dude who got the Beema for $1 should have demanded a discount for cash Kaz.

Bear in mind the economy tanked asking extra for used Jappas is a bit rich you should be dropping prices to suit what buyers are prepared to pay
scarey65,
Aug 10, 5:17pm
but if you agree to the window price, extras are forthcoming. fuel. stereo removal/fitmet ,more so really its 6 of 1 ,half a dozen of the other
car dealers arent making fortunes, and all the really dodgey ones are prety much gone!
they all try for repeat business

I don't know why people think cash is king and deserves a discount. All the dealers I know would prefer to make a finance commission and profit on a warranty. You would be more likely to get a few bucks off if you say you require their finance ansd will buy a warranty.

Just before gst due and end of financial year are good times for buyers.
