Mechanical odometers can even go wonky from new - I would take it with a grain of salt unless it was really obvious. Being NZ-new with one older owner I would highly doubt it's been wound back. The import versions, and the NZ-new VR-4s had the digital odometers, but for some reason the other NZ-new models had the old mechanical odometer.
