Late afternoon the other day along the motorway, absolutely bucketing down, and amongst the morons without lights on was a lone traffic patrol car. Says it all .they may have brainwashed each other and a large portion of our population that they are about road safety and nothing else .absolute BS.

smac, Aug 29, 6:27pm
Ummm.wow. Just.wow.

Just when you start to talk sense you blow it with a doozy like that.

net_oz, Aug 29, 6:32pm
You'd have to be a real thick **** though if you don't adjust your driving accordingly if you get a speeding ticket or two.

net_oz, Aug 29, 6:33pm
Jeez you're full of it today mate.

kazbanz, Aug 29, 6:35pm
And the p top gear /gorden ramsy top tip. Wrap em in cellophane or squirt expanding foam in the hole

smac, Aug 29, 6:40pm
It's not about being thick. It's about timeliness.

Here's an example - wifie and I got a ticket a couple months back. 61 I think it was, in a 50. It's a straight piece of road, 10m clear berms (no exaggeration). The ticket arrives about a month after the event. Neither of us could remember who it would have been so requested the photo. Rear shot. Still no idea who was driving.

Lesson learnt! Nope. Behaviour changed! Nope.

slarty45, Aug 29, 7:15pm
Apparently illegal to flash lights as it slows traffic thus reducing $'s

so if I see a hazard (brown cow on road at night) I do nowt!

74nova, Aug 30, 4:38am
4 speed cameras out west aren't working cause they cost too much to fix ! And they published in the Western leader which ones they are.Stupid !

msigg, Aug 30, 5:05am
net-oz is correct, they do slow down the traffic. Its prretty basic realy. you speed you get fined. Sure if you can afford it don't care. But others with sense or can't afford to pay slow down. There's always idiots out there.

elect70, Aug 30, 1:01pm
Yeah been to perthfrigging thingsare allover the place, move them around dailygot pinged by 1on a bus stopshelterroofMore cop cars patrollingblack spots would be more effectivethan camsbutnot as good at revenue collecting with camsatend of passing lanes

nightsky1, Aug 30, 3:53pm
Why can't you drive your car within the law !
And if you do make a bad decision why can't you face up to it !
More speed cameras !
Bring it on.

r15, Aug 30, 4:07pm
i would love to see an itemisation on that bill. $160k goes a hell of a long way - or at least in the private sector it does

nzdoug, Aug 30, 4:56pm
if only these could be privatised.

gunhand, Aug 30, 5:16pm
Id be into that, bit like the death industry, people keep doin it regaurdless. Least you can avoid it, unlike death.and taxes.

thejazzpianoma, Aug 30, 5:30pm
This is exactly the sort "sounds good at first glance" attitude the Police are trying to instill in people.

There are several issues with this.

Firstly No one drives within the law 100% of the time. Not even you nightsky1, its simply impossible.

The problem is because the real speeders with their big expensive fines are mostly gone from our roads the only way to maintain the 100M a year revenue target is to issue lots of little fines. The only way to do that is to get people on technicalities.

So, if you are 1km/h over the limit during a holiday period at the bottom of a hill, you can get fined.

If you want to pass a car that is cruising at 85km/h but speeds up to 95km/h on the passing lane you have to break the law, and the speed camera in the middle of the passing lane can get you.

The most stupid thing of all though, is that enforcement which revolves around picking people up on technicalities begins to actually reduce safety, and safety should be the true measure of how road Policing is engineered.

While someone is being picked up for doing 1km/h over the limit that officer is not available to pick up the real speeder, tailgater etc that fly's past.

Speed camera's in the middle of passing lanes are hazards.

There are many more examples but hopefully you get the idea.

Everyone is just getting sucked into blind compliance and the true reason for the law is completely forgotten. If you can't understand that I can't help you, your already too far gone.

murray55, Aug 30, 7:10pm
OMG are you so brainwashed as to think because we have a law around speeding it is actually right ! I guarantee almost every NZ driver is supportive of road safety and reducing the road toll .but why on earth do you think speed cameras placed to entrap drivers safely and for good reason exceeding the limit has anything whatsoever to do with road safety. Sure the road toll has been reducing, but I guarantee it will plateau or even increase given time.We need better roads, driver training, tougher dd penalties, officers on the road not sitting for hours feeding the cash register .but it's all been said before but people like you refuse to think beyond "you speed you break the law".

gunhand, Aug 30, 7:12pm
What would those "good reasons" be!

murray55, Aug 30, 7:22pm
Fair enough question .areas of highway around the country that are wide, open and could easily support a higher limit, certain passing situations where it is unsafe not to exceed the limit.

berg, Aug 30, 7:31pm
Unfortunately we have to cater to the LCD or lowest common denominator drivers. Many of our drivers could not handle a higher speed limit.

gunhand, Aug 30, 7:33pm
Yea there are fw places where you feel like your standing still at times for sure.
And a passing situation where it is unsafe not to exceed the limit!how but waiting till it is safe to pass! Thats how people die, over and over and over again, as well as fall off perfectly straight bits of road.Whats the panic to make a dodgy pass in the first place!

magicmat, Aug 30, 7:55pm
Ticket paid! I am guessing like most of us that is a yes. So whether or not your behaviour changed, revenue was gathered so mission accomplished as far as they are concerned.

murray55, Aug 30, 8:10pm
I don't disagree with you, but surely such instances are more about poor judgement and maybe lack of driving skill, rather than speeding. This obsession our law makers have with "speeding" needs to be tackled .road deaths are the result of alcohol, inappropriate speed for conditions, young inexperienced drivers showing how macho they are to their mates, drivers drifting into oncoming traffic, cars not fit for the road , appalling driving skills/knowledge ,.road deaths are NOT caused by me doing 110k's along a wide open motorway on a clear day with little traffic .

gunhand, Aug 30, 8:16pm
Yep agree for sure. But it is what it is and it sort of has to be that way.How else do you do it.Its either illegal or not really. You could say they need (the cops) to make judgements but who says that fella doin 110 wont do 80 in a 50 and kill someone up the road abit. You gotta have laws and they shouldnt be good for some and not others.Hell when I pass (on the bike) ill hit at least105 "cough" to get it done in about 3 seconds but if I got caught there is no excuse.

raymond00001, Aug 31, 7:50am
Even if road policing was actually revenue gathering I'd rather it that way than pay higher taxes. How often do you actually get a ticket! Although the low speed tolerances suck its about practicality and safety. Thats why police operate on big wide main roads, its easy to catch and stop offenders and interact with a wide range of road users.
We all the know the rules of the game. I'll say my driving has definately changed since the higher levels of enforcement and perhaps that has saved an accident or maybe not, who knows.
If you look at the km's those SV6 cop cars clock up, depreciation, their wages, petrol etc and how many fines they issue it works out as a net loss money wise. And the costs also of training the cop to start with. With downtime at accident sites and court cases it hardley works out as an attractive business model.

eajo1mbwass, Sep 3, 3:00pm
yep well now they hide their cars stand behind the trees etc with just a radar gun click your speed write details down and if you are a truckring the company ask for driver details you get the fine and demerits unlike the car that just gets the fine sent , new cameras in vans are now infra red so noflash and now can tell if you are towing trailer as well or if you are a truck.
