here in nz the biggest problem is the poor driver skills standard to get a license , The rule that you can overtake on left and right also is a bad one for allowing higher speeds on motorways. Example northshore toll road to albany , this road could be open speed limmit no problems its similar to german motorway parts where there is no speed limmit , but you cant have traffic overtake on both sides at this speeds they drive on the right hand side in germany so slow traffic has to stay right and overtaking is only permitted on left no matter what. So the left lane is for fast traffic only or quick overtaking and one has to use the rear view mirror to see how fast traffic is comming up behind you on the fast lane before you pull out.

Theirs the problem intrade,nz drivers dont indicate, cant drive in the correct lane, drivers in the Detschland are probably used to cars closing on them at 250+ ,and look in the mirror !

There are Stop signs at the Aririmu Motorway off ramps, both North and Southbound, very, very few vehicles bother stopping, I would estimate, 1 in 10, even police cars.Often, there are CVIU cops waiting on the over bridge for trucks coming along the Motorway, to take them to the Drury weigh bridge, and they simply ignore the traffic failing to stop. They may as well put give way signs there, because the Stop sign rules are never Policed.

We should get rid of yellow lines for no overtaking. People don't obey those either and there are plenty of stretches of road where they end or aren't there and people then think its an ok place to pass. And an exemption for motorbikes and others that can accelerate swiftly. We can only reminisance about the good ol days getting past the lineup through the manawatu gorge.

Youre right intrade, i recall a test case in CH CH, manyyears ago, it was illegal up till then., the judge was named Molineaux ( spelling could be wrong), the MOT or Police, had charged someone for overtaking on the left, on the Motorway, he scrubbed it, his stupid ruling in that case, was the beginning of allowing overtaking on the left.

Arhh its bad enoughas it iswith stop signs ,without them relying on give way rules recipe for disaster .

Biggest problem is definitely the hopeless driving standard in NZ.
9.30 this morning traveling along the Wellington motorway it was bucketing down .murky and dark .and still the morons were out with no lights on COMPLETELY oblivious to the fact that no one could see them !
Went past a woman driving a newish expensive BMW X5 .no lights but I assume she was of reasonable intelligence, but when it comes to driving skills or awareness on a par with a chimp from Wellington zoo !

Saw a very similar thing the other night coming back from Auckland at around 9:30pm. There was a honda odyssey full of people weaving through heavy traffic with no lights on(no parkers or interior lights). I damn near changed lanes on them as i couldnt see them coming up the middle lane.

I know of quite a few people who have had tickets for failing to stop at that same offramp. Often see 4 cop cars parked on that bridge, 2 looking for speedsters coming north and south and 2 watching the stop signs.
