Stop signs and relaxing the speeding laws abit.

OK, there are a few who think we should have higher open road limits for many reasons. I do agree somewhat that there could be higher speeds on some roads but overall I think its a bad idea.
The reason being. I have a habit of oberving stop sign behaviour when im sitting in the car, for whatever reason, waiting on kids misses etc. Again today out of about 20 cars6 actaully came to a full and complete stop. Thats also counting cars that were forced to stop by traffic.
SO, If many (and ive observed a few stop signs and its always the same) can not even do the most basic and simple task (its not like its one you have think about or any confusion over what to do) then why the hell would anyone ever think of increasing the open road limits!
And again it was all sorts doin it.
Maybe get the basics and someone may think about relaxing some laws.or not.

Stop at the stop signs! Dats crazy talk! Invercargill didn't become the intersection crash capital of nz by observing road rules ya know

jarrod261, Sep 16, 3:25pm
Whats the big deal about raising the speed limit!

berg, Sep 16, 3:34pm
Called "LCD" or "lowest common denominator" gun. Unfortunately all drivers suffer due to the actions of those who cannot.

gunhand, Sep 16, 3:38pm
Yeeeeaaaa, but if was one kinda person or carmaybe, but its all sorts. Young old, car, 4x4, van, bus you name it.

aj254, Sep 16, 3:51pm
Personally I think some stop signs are unnecessary.

gunhand, Sep 16, 3:51pm
Aaaaaaaaa, but does the above and below average know! That could be the problem.

In Auckland I am afraid that when I stop at a stop sign someone will hit my car from behind. But I still stop.

A few years back there was a township in either rural Victoria or NSW where the council decided to trial getting rid of some stop signs at one, or might have been a couple of major intersections in the town for a period, in the interests of seeing what would happen to the crash rate when they removed. It was known that motorists often appeared to ignore the signs.Guess what happened to the crash rate! NOTHING.If anything the flow of traffic in the area improved.

On a couple of occasions when I got pinged for not stopping at a stop sign the cop asked why I didn't stop. The reply was that there was nothing coming so there was no need to stop, bit obvious I thought.
It's a bit like having a sign that says "Duck" nailed to a low branch and making short people duck even though they are lower than the branch.

Where I worked in oz was right on the goldcoast highway. There was an intersection just down from work that used to get snarled up bad in the traffic, you'd often have to wait 10 or 15 minutes to get through over 3 or more cycles of the lights. one day the lights stopped working and I thought oh boy here we go, but the traffic flowed through great, everyone was getting through fast and after a few minutes there wasn't even cars queing up to get through it was that smooth. then the lights started working again and it was traffic jam as usual

well i believe an increase to 110kph in places
main arteral rds incresed to 60kph (towns/city)
stop signs rate very poorly were some that should be are giveway
all schools should be 40kph8.30-9.00 / 2.30-3.30 on school days
roundabouts should be limited to 20kph
giveway to buses exiting stops or turning
putting stop signs for peds using crossings alerting them to see that traffic is stopping
put more rd safety into schools re crossingbiking / mbikes cars heavy transport
etc etc

rpvr, Sep 16, 6:56pm
What are the criteria for having a stop sign rather than a give way! There must be a formula. I note a number in my area which in my view could easily be replaced by give way signs. On the other hand, there are a number of give way signs at very busy intersections with limited visibility, which should have stop signs.

Hate getting stuck behind people who stop on give way signs and not stop at stop signs.

flack88, Sep 16, 7:55pm
Got taken out big time at stop sign 12 years ago in by prick in a ef11 fairmont company car,i was in a Rover p6 about a 70kmh impact [80k]zone,he never stopped at sign, both cars totaled, still cant believe we walked away with minor injuries .As he says LCD!

We don't have speed limits in NZ. The speed signs tell you the speed you are supposed to travel at all times. This would not be the case if they were set too high. For example most people will not do 100k in heavy fog, or on a windy gravel road as they know they can't react in time or they can't take a 30k corner at 100k. This also demonstrates that the speed limits in NZ are normally set too low. I think speed limits should be abandoned. They should be called 'recommended speeds' and you shouldn't be fined for exceeding them or road raged for travelling under them. A good driver will travel at a safe speed despite the speed limit not because of it and will let faster drivers past. This is what we should be concentraiting on not tweaking the 'recommended speed' up and down depending on the weather conditions, who has been elected and what the tolerance is this weekend.

And most cross the road to your shop on the wrong side of the road.friggen disgusting

It is interesting to observe people's driving behaviour.
One thing I notice most is the lack of observation of road signs. Speed transition areas are good examples - where the limit changes from 50 to 80 for example.
A large percentage of drivers don't seem to notice the 80 signs, and continue to travel at 50. They see the houses in the distance and obviously think to themselves "Oh, it's still a 50 area" and continue at that speed.
I suspect the same thing happens at intersections. They see the road ending, so they slow down - but they don't see the signs, and simply 'give way' and keep moving if no cars are coming.
If I was a cop and spent my days cruising my local area and stopping people for all the things I see drivers doing wrong, I'd be writing out tickets all over the place.
I'm not saying my driving is perfect, but at least I READ the signs and follow them!

I've noticed a similar issue at roadworks. Example - traveling on SH1 - signs indicate 30, so I slow down and travel at that speed. I consistently get idiots nearly rear-ending me because they believe they can still travel at 120, and not have to slow for the 30 signs. I've even had w@nkers pull out and pass over double yellow lines because I'm obviously going far too slow for their fast-paced lifestyles!

Some people also seem to think that temporary speed limit signs don't apply after dark (when there are no road crews working) or when they can't see any signs of road-workers up ahead - and they pull the same insane stunts of dangerous overtaking or sitting right up my rear.

Watch out fools - one day I'll have to stop in a BIG hurry!

stop signs, I yet to see any one stop at one, that would begreat revenue

Just been in Rome and the Republic has six roads coming in to it. with no traffic signs at all including pedestrian crossings, and traffic flows just fine. Even we got used to stepping off the footpath and drivers stopping for us.guess thats why Italians make good race car drivers.

intrade, Sep 17, 8:55am
in switzerland the pedestrians walk across the zebra stripes without looking because a car has to stop for them, so you never know if somone walking on a footpath is jumping in front of your car at any minute, it did not used to be like this and i recon they all got a suiecide wish. I always waited till the car fully stopped i got no death-wish.A young 20 year old told me he wants to be hit so he can sue the car driver for free money, i told him mate you dont need no money when your dead or in a wheelchair. To mutch people who walk round with the brain turned off.
italia is different and in germany you can go on autobahn on some parts as fast as your car is going without crashing -rules off comon sens apply still.
