Because LTNZ cannot audit where the inspection is carried out.

If you want home tune to do a WOF on your car you have to take it to their home base. They wont do it at your home.

scuba, Oct 6, 6:12am
so doesn't that tell you the system is working!

kimbo88, Oct 6, 6:13am
A WOF has to be based on time, and not distance travelled, as we already have the dodgies that get around RUC's by disconnecting the odometer, and also some components do deteriorate with time, even if the vehicle is not used a lot over a period of time.I favour retaining the current system, as there are still too many vehicles failing in the current 6 month period. If people want the intervals extended, it should really be based on an improvement in the current fail rate over a period of time. There are plenty of vehicles that do high mileages within a 6 month period, some being well maintained and others that are not.Conditions that the vehicles are used under also play a part - vehicles that are constantly driven on sub-standard roading suffer far greater wear and tear, be it on some back country rural roads, or driving around a lot of Christchurch at the moment. It takes it's toll on suspension components, shocks, etc.

absolutely-spent 30 years in the industry car maintenance is a grudge purchase.
where do you draw the line!
if left up to the average owner it just doesn't get done.
company vehicles can be the bad . Often boss doesn't want to spend the money . car gets high mileage up boss says "just a few more months then we will replace it"
yeah right.

therafter1, Oct 6, 6:21am
Far to logical mate, on here without a link to the appropriate stats you have no argument !

gunhand, Oct 6, 6:46am
Absolutly, There are many who don't/won't maintain there car or just plain don't know there vehicale is getting to a dangerous standerd. I had to replace a ball joint on my car last warrent and two tyres. Now how the hell would I know my ball joint was getting buggered! no signs while driveing, and if I got under it I still wouldnt know as Im no mechanic. I can tell if a shocks shagged and if the muffler has a hole in it etc but some things are not so easy to check in the driveway. The tyres to me looked fine as well as 3/4 of them were just that, fine. However the inside edge was quite badly worn but on casual glance you just coudnt see it.
Also theres a large list of pre drive checks and other checks listed in most owners manuals that cover a few warrent items if people done them, however most get in and just drive and do actually rely on WOFs for maintanence issues (not oil or water). I wouldnt expect my wife to know if somethings wearing out under the car.
And as for saying not many accidents are caused by WOF issues, that may be true but how many a prevented because Mr or Mrs XX had to put 4 new tyres on ther car last warrent. If they hadnt they would have drivin about blissfully unawhere there was problem untill they slamed into another car on a wet day going around a sharpish corner and it all let go.
And the amount of people who moan and groan how much therewarrent cost last time (for repairs) you have to wonder about as well as if there moaning about the cost they sure as hell wouldnt have done it off there own bat.
Why is assumed everyone should be mechanicly minded, hell if everyone was up to the excpected calliber as some think they should be on here there would be no real need for mechanics at all.
Do you think you doctor has any idea how his car works! do you know how your body works! cause its way more complicated than any car.

chebry, Oct 6, 6:47am
When this was investigated in Vic (OZ) unroadworthines was the least cause

chebry, Oct 6, 6:50am
If you cant be bothered maintaining your car in a roadworthy condition or paying someone else to do so get off the roads you are a menace.

gunhand, Oct 6, 6:53am
So how does that work for some people!take it to your mechanic.say every six months and say, Maintain it please!I can see some severe rip offs happening if thats what many had to do.

scuba, Oct 6, 6:54am
thats right -but who makes the call!-

scuba, Oct 6, 7:00am
maybe - but i've seen far too many cars with tyres worn thru the steel belts, dangerously worn suspension components or with accident damage unrepaired or other damage being driven by people with no idea of the risks and potential danger they are in .
young familys with little disposable income and older retired people very comman to try to do minimal maintenance.

therafter1, Oct 6, 7:01am
And when do they make the call, after lives are lost because a tie rod end parted company with its connecting ball, or before !

therafter1, Oct 6, 7:04am
Anyone that is silly enough to believe that the govt is looking at the system from the perspective that the govt is out to save the average punter $50.00 a year is deluding themselves . it has nothing to do with saving punters fifty bucks a year, and everything to do with creating an opening for yet another revenue stream for the govt !

zetec, Oct 6, 7:04am
That's it "some people" lets penalise every car owner because some people don't maintain their cars, its not hard to get your vehicle serviced once a year, any garage will put it on a hoist and check ball joints, steering linkages, exhaust leaks etc as part of a service. You don't need a government mandated inspection regime to keep your car in good mechanical order.

gunhand, Oct 6, 7:06am
You think car owners are bad, you should see what some motorcyclists ride on between warrents. Scary scary stuff.
Yea toss the WOF system but have the road cops dish out huge fines and demerits for unroadworthy cars and doing full roadside checks to see if ya ball joint is fine, then $200 fine if its not, and still have to pay for th fix. Yea can see that going down well.
They kinda do it now though LOL.

franc123, Oct 6, 7:06am
It's called correct and complete servicing to manufacturers spec's done at the correct time/km intervals by an appropriately qualified person, its that simple. This person also signs off the work thats been done and checked. Read through any service booklet and see what should be checked, all the critical stuff is there. Likewise if you suspect that a roadworthiness problem has developed in between times you also get that checked, you are actually legally obliged to do so. Those of you who drive off with glee with your new WOF sticker on with the expectation of not having to spend money on your car for the next six or twelve months, read the fine print on the back of the checksheet. Might also pay to read the fine print on your insurance policy too lol.

gunhand, Oct 6, 7:09am
Yea sadly you do, just like evey other rule we have, people cant keep to them as it is without"suggesting" you stick to them as guideline.
Your dealing with human nature here. And we all know humans are the most and least intelligent speices on the planet .

scuba, Oct 6, 7:10am
just one exampe - many years ago when the earth was still young and i was an apprentice-guy brings his Holden in for a wof.
steering wheel has a crack near the hub-3/4 of the way thru but still drives ok '
tech doing the wof check takes firm grip of steering wheel gives a good yank and a twist- snaps steering wheel off in his hand.-well that's a fail-lol.
customer comes back and promptly starts tearing strips off the tech and the foreman: "the wheel was fine .you broke my car and you need to fix it"

was a good ten minutes before he cooled down enough to admit it wasn't a good idea to drive around with the steering wheel like that.

gunhand, Oct 6, 7:12am
Maybe so, but your perfect world dosn't excist. Its just the way it is. Hell if everyone maintained there cars as per manufactures spec there would be far less issues for sure and alot better cars out there. Never happen though.

therafter1, Oct 6, 7:12am
Unfortunately that's how it works with lowest common denominator scenarios. Just like speed limits !

Funny how we always have this sort of squawking, and everyone feels that they are being shafted as a consequence of lowest common denominator scenarios . until their beloved are cleaned up by a clown in a situation where personal responsibility was applicable but not applied, then they want the re-application of the lowest common denominator regulation !

therafter1, Oct 6, 7:16am
A vehicle is serviced and found to be in a dangerous state. Without regulation how is that person prevented from continuing to use that vehicle on public roads !

franc123, Oct 6, 7:18am
That is easily avoided by maintaining the car right! As we keep saying. No problems, no fines.

franc123, Oct 6, 7:22am
Umm, theres nothing stopping them doing that now! AVI's don't have the power to stop a vehicle owner from using their car after an epic WOF failure.
