Hard decision, HSV, SS or Calaise

the time has come to upgrade the car we have, we are looking at all three of the above but cannot decide on one or the other, I find the calaise a little boring to look at but they seem better value for money, hubby seems to be leaning more towards the calaise, but I think I'm liking the ss more, so are there many differences between the three.

Calaise is more the luxery version, should ride smoother overall. HSV is usually up rated with the body kit , bigger brakes and more KW than the SS but normally you will pay more for an HSV. Guess it comes down to personal preference and what value you can get for your money.

Ive found some models of SS quite a hard ride if you do a fair bit of open road stuff (did a long road trip in a mates one & couldnt wait to get back to my soft old Fairmont). For a family car or cruiser Id go Calais everytime & add a few bits later if the appearance is a bit sedate

Wow thats very nice but would be wasted on us, hahaha,

jkm, Sep 28, 3:44pm
Damn seem to have misplaced my $132,000 somwhere.

doctor_evil99, Sep 28, 3:44pm
is your surname something like Caltex, Mobil, BP or Z!

narnies, Sep 28, 3:50pm
I wish it was, I do close to 500 k's a week just getting to work and home, but oh well you only live once, if I have to drive that distance it should at least be in something I enjoy driving.

jkm, Sep 28, 3:56pm
problem with the Wilkenshaw is not so much the fuel usage, but the excessive rear tyre wear and the multiplication of demerit points on your licence. LOL

moosie_21, Sep 28, 3:57pm
GTR, Dodge Viper and Porsche money for a Holden.

jkm, Sep 28, 4:02pm
Actually I am a cheap skate and would never pay $132,000 for any vehicle!

clark20, Sep 28, 4:41pm
ITS Calais!

I have a VE Calais V series V8, with FE2 suspension, so it is a SS with Luxury. Later Calais (2008) got softer. So best of both worlds.

mantagsi, Sep 28, 6:57pm
The usual disclaimers, yeah I do dig V8's and I don't mind Holdens at all, but that car is tacky, no two ways about it. I am sure it would be one hell of a blast to drive, but I wish when they did these specials they could tone down the excessive decals etc

thejazzpianoma, Sep 28, 7:21pm
At the risk of upsetting the trolls.

If it was me, I would buy an Audi A6 (or A4 if big enough) with the 3.0 Diesel.

It will still give you fantastic performance (performance sits somewhere between the 6 cylinder and V8 Commodore's). Yet your running costs are less than half that of running the V8 Commodore.

Most importantly though, its just a much nicer and better equipped vehicle all round.

Not sure if you are looking at new or used but you can pick up an A6 or A4 thats a couple of years old for new SS commodore money.

If you go and drive one you will see what I mean.

ryanm2, Sep 28, 8:18pm
completely agree - Ive also found most of the VE HSV's tacky too - stupid LED lights, massive rims, air scoops for africa, immature decals or paint configurations etc etc. Aussie rice eh.

chris_051, Sep 29, 3:42am
What do you mean, a v8 commodore or falcon can achieve 9l/100km open road no worries, your shitboxes 4 cylinder camry or accord etc will beat that by maybe 2l/100km so say $40 cheaper per 1000km hardly bank breaking stuff.
The SS will have better resale, the Calais will be nicer to own and drive everyday

franc123, Sep 29, 6:30am
Calais will be the most suitable for that job by far. I would choose any HSV as a daily driver, the costs of keeping them in tyres and brakes alone are too much for most people to justify.Better resale value is the only real plus.

Ain't they just.

I cringe every time I see one.

whqqsh, Sep 29, 6:54am
where I live theyre mainly driven by middle aged Indians with thick 'gold' chains. or white guys with no taste

edangus, Sep 29, 7:56am
Get a 300c

m16d, Sep 29, 8:14am
Dont know where you get the V8 figures from.!

Toyota Camry Sedan
Priced from $44,990 to $56,890
Engine capacity 2.5 litres
Fuel consumption 5.2 to 7.8 litres per 100k

Holden Calais Sedan
Priced from $58,790 to $75,290
Engine capacity 3.6 to 6.0 litres
Fuel consumption 9.5 to 12.4 litres per 100km

budgel, Sep 29, 8:18am
Look at the BMW V8s in that price range. they are often better value for money, definitely nicer to drive.

ksam, Sep 29, 8:22am
We have a vx clubsport and I can't come close to those sort of numbers, 11.5 is the best I've had and that's on mainly open rd, also we are fairly light on the right pedal, having said that, we didn't get a v8 thinking it was economical, we got it cause it's great to drive.

clark20, Sep 29, 8:29am
Don't know about 9, I took it easy and got 10.3L/100km Auck - Rotorua,
may be better now its tuned. I am getting 17 in stop start home-work traffic

clark20, Sep 29, 8:31am
Thats why I don't have one, screams "try hard" and "look at me" too much

chris_051, Sep 29, 8:53am
My BA V8 will get 9l/100km Auckland to Wellington consistently, and LS1 owners were getting better fuel figures open road at the time. I can only imagine a VE 6.0 with afm and 6 speed will be better. My old 4.4 v8 5 series would get 8.6l/100km over the same road.
