If I heard right this was the latest round of nonsense from the MTA propaganda mouthpiece on T.V tonight.
So what's the go!
Are we to take this as a petty threat that they are going to increase the cost of a WOF inspection!
Or is it just some wishy washy nonsense trying to muddy the waters by pairing off financial and social cost in the same ridiculous equation!
I would really like to see someone have a go at them for the legality of some of these claims.

yea you could say they are corrupt and only look after there interests with what ever lie possibile.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$- $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ The government should run some adds to to tell the people who drive cars its not ok to just drive it and think the wof is a service its everyones responsibility to drive a savevehicle and the ad should show the cops green and pink stickering cars and crushing the heaps with discount voucher for shoes after all they run pay your fines or pay the price adds.

Sadly its true Jazz. While I don't really support the MTA (despite being a member) in their childish 'safety' argument. I really do have concerns about whether a reduction in frequency of inspection WILL save the motorist money. In the event of a change to annual testing, I certainly will be substantially raising the price of a WoF. Not out of spite, but because the reduction in inspections will in real terms push my costs up considerably. If I am forced to purchased, and maintain more expensive equipment (part of one proposal)in order to continue testing that cost will have to be passed on also that's business and the people who don't raise prices will go bust.

in reailty whats it guna save you if your car suddenly gets yearly wofs instead of 6 monthly wofs. $45.00 Not a big amount to know your car has been checked 6 monthly and is safe. And its likely that things that mite have been picked up at the 6 month warrant mite get worse and cost more to repair after a year due to more damage being done from being left for longer.

This is a shell game by the government. It seems strange that the WoF rules have been getting tougher for the last 20 years (since Jap imports).and now they want to take a step back!.!This is not about saving the motorist money, it's a carrot.and meanwhile, while you weren't looking.

6 month wofs are a pain in the arse and totally not needed. "every" other country has annual wofs. whats the big deal! if your car is pulled over and its unroadworthy, then it goes on a tow truck.hell if its uninsured it should go on a tow truck.

I really dont care Ive driven in a 12 monthly system in OZ you keep your car in reasonable order no oil leaks or rust and you get an easy time I was driving an EH Special in 90s Sydney traffic and it did fine coped with being a daily driver and with being left for months while I was away it always passed inspection I had to replace the steering box in 2002 to get Tassie rego and new wheel cylinders and that would be its first and last inspection in Tasmania as long as its kept regoed it can stay on the road forever and not be rechecked but I like my cars drivable.

Yesss, Pointy finger. I've said it before, nuthin happens in this country without a substantial price rise for consumers.

Yup. they want us to play the rat race game and get a new car every few years. that's good for the economy they think.

why do people want the police to start doing road side checks. A its a waste of police time when we have a system that checks the vehicles anyway. When the police can be out solving crimes etc. And them some people start to say we need to be more on to it regarding our own vehicles. Fair enuf I agree. But getting the police to ,do road side checks well thats just passing the job on to someone else not the owner. And we cant compare our fleet to most of the rest of the world. Our fleet is alot older thats why 6 monthly warrant exsist.

well here's my take on it::the govt needs revenue, they get sfa from wof taxes ( gst etc ) if they extend the wof out to 12 mnth or more, MAN THERES GUNNA BE LOTS MORE CARS THAT DONT measure up to a roadside scrutiny by the plod, so every time you get pulled up ( on some fictitious reason )BANG!theres $200 for worn tyre, or such , now thats cunning, not only that, if your a real cynic like me, every extra death they can create ( and get away with - not hard with the spin doctors' no pun intended ' the govt has ) is one less retirement hand out !.

Rest assured you can be certain that, as they say in their own marketing, these MTA people are dedicated.to preserving the goose that lays the golden eggs, this is of course their VTNZ network that has hugely expanded in the last decade or so. You can bet that when across the board 12 month inspections come to pass they will turn their back on the network of small garages that created them and lobby even harder for compulsory emission and roller brake testing, two things they know the smaller lower volume AVIC's won't want to invest in given the even further reduced numbers of inspections carried out. Once they've been weeded out THEN the prices will go up.

No, 6 month WOF's only exist because thats the way its always been, since before WW2 in fact. Nobody has stood back and questioned the need for it until now.And taken into account greatly improved safety technology in vehicles and our roading system.

yes but people havent greatly improved there maintenance. Vehicles have got much more reliable that the human race thinks cars dont brake down so they dont service them as often. But brakes and tires still wear out no matter how good the car is. These are the things that people need to (but Dont) keep an eye on. How do I know this. When I get vehicles in for wofs with bald tires and worn out brakes they obviously arnt servicing or kicking there tires on the odd occasion.

Moot argument to a point as many of the krap vehicles I see every day (those with faults other than basic lights out, broken screens, one worn tyre etc) don't have current WOFs anyway. You folks would be shocked if you knew just how many unwarranted cars are out there.
franc123,
Oct 20, 9:31am
And thats precisely why roadside enforcement needs to be ramped up. But hey some people on here are dead against that. It would be far more effective in stamping out non compliance to have AVI's working alongside police in booze bus style operations, checking critical parts of cars and taking appropriate action against the operator if problems are found. If we can afford to have police spending time hiding in bushes with laser guns pinging people for doing 54kph we can afford to have random roadworthy checks.
berg,
Oct 20, 9:45am
We already do random roadside checks franc123. You'd be horrified if you saw some of the things we found of which most are unwarranted, unregistered and often driven by unlicenced drivers. No WOF system is ever going to deal with these cars and their drivers. Police have vacancies for qualified mechanics to join certain departments at the moment and they often get farmed out to road policing
franc123,
Oct 20, 10:56am
Good to hear that berg, its exactly what should be happening, target the hard core who have no intention of operating safe vehicles. I firmly believe that if this scheme was to be implemented properly it will be far fairer on the general population who do by and large take at least reasonable care of their vehicles AND achieve the target of getting the crap off the road that could be a genuine danger to other motorists. Just because we have always had 6 month wofs doesn't mean its the most effective way of achieving this.

They have - back in the early '90's a one sticker plan was under way. One sticker for WoF and rego.yearly inspections, and all done on a computer. The computer part was the hold up.and in the meantime we got new woF and rego stickers, and a 12 month woF for under 3 years. I remember we were even shown samples for the proposed single label. Why don't they do that again, everything is finally in place.

Jazz.do I recall being promised as a rate payer that the integration of all Auckland cities to one super city was not going to raise rates.YEAH RIGHT!

Berg--throwwing an idea out there -what if WOF was scrapped and the WOF inspectors were employed as random roadside inspectors.! I feel MOST of the population run pretty well legal cars but if they know their car would be ordered off the road for bald tyres, loud exhaust excess rust, loose steering etc they would be accepting personal responsibility FINALLY. The repeat offenders aren't gonna care if its 6 12 or 24 month wofs. Their cars will still be illegal. But if there was active policing of it and for example instant impound for 2 or more MAJOR faults maybee it would force them off the road
berg,
Oct 20, 12:25pm
Could work Kaz. I quite like the English option where serious faults see your car required to pass a MOT before returning to the roads (although our pink sticker system should do the same). The differencethere is if caught driving again (like our clowns do here) without the vehicle having been checked its instant impound time rather than our paltry $600 fine that's never paid anyway.

We saw a car in Papanui car park last week and it had bits of cardboard for numbers plates and the warrent expired a year ago it was a wreak being driven around . rang *555 and was told they did not have a car in the area to do any thing . This was strange as we saw 3 cop cars close in the next 5 minutes . Too Lazy to do anything !It was only 5 min walk from the nearest police station ! Its a joke the police not doing anything about all the unregistered and unwarrented cars on the road in Chch area
kazbanz,

Thinking about it.If wof was on C of O only then a bit of clever marketing would have testing stations also doing "safety inspections" for those that see their cars as an appliance. Me I'd be advertising with a big ol scarey advert "IS YOUR CAR SAFE!" Flashes to impounded cars and green stickers.-Inspection isn't compulsary but great peace of mind. For ONLY $120 we can make sure your car is mechanically sound and has a clean oil n filter.
