I know you get what you pay for, but have the imported kit-set Chinese trailers got any better than the ones that were around a few years ago!
Anyone had any issues lately or can you recommend any brand.Cheers

Bunnings or someone were selling them/ yes it was on fairgo. Apparently the stub axles where at dead right angles and they broke off.Caused a poltice of damage and finally whoever sold them came to the party and paid the chaps damage bill. It was BIG

I blame the last Labour Government.they signed the Free Trade Agreement with China making NZ a dumping ground for this crap.

I've got what I assume to be a chinese trailer, seems ok. Only problem was the atricious wiring done by the NZ assembler.

My Boyfriend is a service manager at a Trailer Company in Auckland and he says that he would'nt service a Chinese Bolt together trailer as they are more trouble than what there worth.

therafter1, Oct 16, 5:13pm
It depends on what you use them for Sifty, and how much you load them when you do use them. We do roadside breakdowns and if the breakdown relates to a trailer then you can put money on it that it will be a very old trailer running antique type wheel sizes shod with tubed crossply tyres (usually the same age as the trailer lol), or a chinese sourced trailer. The problems with the chinese ones vary with broken/cracked drawbars, flimsy towball couplings breaking, u-bolts working themselves loose, but the main problem by far is wheel bearing failure. In many instances with the bearing failures the trailers appear not to have had a lot of use, so if you plan on doing any reasonably long hauls with the trailer with a bit of a load on I would have the wheel bearings replaced with good quality NZ sourced wheel bearings.

good advice.
i only use mine half a dozen times a year. Would hate it to drop a wheel while carrying an expensive bike, might look into bearing replacement as an option.

Steel work seems quite robust however, sits outside and galvanising is sound, welds look good and solid metal

Saw one on the side of the road in palmy the other day. Axle, one spring and both wheels were about a hundred yards behind it.

PMSL, sounds about right

supernova2, Oct 16, 10:52pm
Now that's scarey.Wheel bearing failure on a train could be interesting to say the least.

studio1, Oct 17, 7:55am
Indeed. They've had a plethora of issues with the DL locos and the next batch of 20 are on hold until Dalian sort out the problems with the current fleet.

Collapsed armature and traction motor bearings, major engine repairs, traction motors blown up (eight destroyed to date) due to cracks found in the bearing housing, pump motors burning out, vibration problems, gearbox issues, alternator problems, broken bolts in the axle housings, cables passed through holes in sheetmetal and wearing through, the list goes on.

One loco was parked up for three months due to vibration problems and during that time it was robbed for parts to keep the other ones going. This is not a good look for $3 million+ units.

I would NEVER buy a china made trailer, even for carrying light loads.
I just wouldn't trust it. They don't care about what happens to their crap once it's left the factory. If a bearing collapses and a wheel flies off and kills someone, they don't care and probably don't want to know.

i saw one at an auction with a cage on it. the welding was shocking. i would have been surprised if it got home without some breaking and there was more than one weld that was only on one piece of the steel.

Mate got one and within a year of lght work, all the bolt holes had elongated. Had to re-drill oversize and then welded eack location along with new bolts. That fixed it.
But running gear is real suspect.

sifty, Oct 19, 6:21am
maybe mine isn't chinese, gave it the onceover last night, and decent steel, great galv job and nice looking welds.

hyphen, Oct 19, 6:21am
they are cheap and nasty, which fits the kiwi "warehouse" mentality - "buy cheap and nasty - complain and blame others when it breaks"

Why would you!
Good NZ build galv trailer starts at about $1800 for single axle 6' x 4', probably last you a lifetime.
