Get a friend with engineering nouse to look at a few second hand ones on Trademe that need a refurbish. Go for the ones made of angle iron rather than box section so you can see the steel condition. The box section can look ok outside but be rusting from the inside out. get one with a nice set of late model automobile hubs and stubs or from the NZ trailer component manufacturers. Take it home and strip it down and rebuild it with whatever it needs. Put in a new set of bearings, lights and wiring. Even a new towing hitch so you know it is in good condition. Rego is cheap and easy if it has none. NZ has some great handymen and it will be easy to find one and fully refurbish it for well under $1000. Maybe even only a couple of hundred. It probably has alreadydone a family for 20 years and will do another 20 for you. Also you can learn something useful and be proud of it. I built my trailer 30 years ago, learning to weld while I did it. I refurbished it 4 years ago with bearings, rustproofing, new deck and sides and it is still going fine. It carries everything from motor bikes to building mix. Get out there and get into it. Bet you know someone to advise you if you need. Its a great project and rewards you every time you use it.

i built one for about $600 not galved though but it included a cage. $1800 is the problem. most people couldnt afford that sort of money for something that probably isnt used very often. chinese = half price. not a good choice but makes financial sense to the buyers i guess. personally i wouldnt buy a chinesetrailer at any cost.

had ours for about 6 yrs with no probs - when they go for a warrant do these things get checked!

structural welds should be checked and the general conditon of the steel etc but warrant standards vary so much (they shouldnt but they do) anything could be missed.

#19- .<Indeed. They've had a plethora of issues with the DL locos and the next batch of 20 are on hold until Dalian sort out the problems with the current fleet.
Collapsed armature and traction motor bearings, major engine repairs, traction motors blown up (eight destroyed to date) due to cracks found in the bearing housing, pump motors burning out, vibration problems, gearbox issues, alternator problems, broken bolts in the axle housings, cables passed through holes in sheetmetal and wearing through, the list goes on.
One loco was parked up for three months due to vibration problems and during that time it was robbed for parts to keep the other ones going. This is not a good look for $3 million+ units.>.
I cannot understand why NZ always buys on the cheap. We've traditionally done that with our always-primitive railway stock. We've never bought the best, ever. We have a built-in hangover from when everything was bought on the lowest tender price to save money. - that mentality never works in the long run.

as far as the "new" locos go the traction motors and running gear are the same as the old DX locos. Using Jim Quinn's analogy "you can't run a modern railway with a fleet of HQ Holdens", well Kiwirail have simply bought a fleet of poorly made HQ Holdens, only difference being they have a later model Commodore look about them to fool us into thinking we have "late model" locos. Just saying.

Scary stuff - they're building aeroplanes and ships, as well. They seem to fall apart, as well.

I picked on up on TM for $200 made in 76. was in good condition just rough paintwork and shot tires. spent another $200 repainting it and putting new lights and wiring on it and second hand tires. been using it for 4 years now been a great trailer. I don't know what a Chinese made one costs but I personally would not been keen on one

They'd be cheap chinky copies though wouldn't they! I couldn't see this doolallyland or dailan or whatever they're called fitting the quality US made bits that Gen electric and GM used in the DX,DC and DF's that have been used for 30-40 years now and been proved over millions of kms.
