Exactly. Proper enforcement will ensure cars are kept in a safe condition. If those that wish to have their cars checked every 6 mths, good luck to them but it should be voluntary. And those that ignore wofs now will learn to keep their cars in better condition if they know they will automatically be walking if stopped in an unroadworthy car. My 2nd car would be lucky to do 2000kms every 6 months. Where's the logic in having to WOF that every 6 mths. The age of our vehicle fleet is very similar to the US & Aus where mosts States don't require testing.

What we need is a dedicated traffic police like the Highway patrols in Aus that only do road policing ,We used to have this as the MOT but it was amalgamated with the police for and became useless at basic safety of vehicles on the road .They are only interested in the easy catches not walking around and looking at all of the unregistered and unwarrented vehicles in cars park around the cities and doing something about them .

Have to agree a return to an MOT based traffic force would be a positive move. Sadly the publics opinion of the police has lowered since the amalgamation. I'm sure the original idea was that by joining them the orginal MOT officers image would go up to the general bobbys status unfortunatly the reverse has happened, now instead of us thinking the MOT are ba$tards all police are tarred.

Some excellent and true posts above, traffic policing DID turn to crap following the axing of the old traffic unit. It was only done as an image improver, to deliver a Govt promise of 900 extra cops, and of course to save money. It was a short sighted ill thought through mistake. Re image it had the opposite effect. We do need the black and whites back, looking back the public had a far greater fear of the dedicated traffic cops. someone get the heat gun to get the police decals off and I'll get the black paint and the spraypainting gear ready.
