Removing nuts.

A friend wants me to remove his nuts. Not those nuts but the ones holding his wheel on. There are three which are so stuck on that a socket and rattle gun just rounded the corners off them. There is reasonable access around the nut and they are steel not some crappy alloy. Any suggestions!

Nut splitter or just split them with a chisel

skin1235, Oct 11, 5:06pm
corners already rounded off then use an arc welder to just put one corner back on, tap a socket over your new weld and bingo I bet they fly off

Have you been using a 12 sided socket or a 6 sided socket! A good 6 sided socket andlong powerbar (or powerbar and a long pipe) should crack them en with the corners rounded off.

unfortunately I only have a 20mm in 12pt Yes Id prefer a set of 6point sockets as they take off heaps off stuff. Be good to use my air compressor too as those little ones dont seem to flow enough through the regulator to run the rattle gun properly

unfortunately I only have a 20mm in 12pt

Typo!- or reason!
Unfortunatley most wheel nuts are either 21 or 19.

morrisman1, Oct 11, 5:56pm
well I thought so. but 21mm was way loose and 19mm too small.

Standard issue wheel braceSIX POINT HEX.and length of pipe-21 mill nuts already rounded once and now further rounded.

A sharp knife and a face cloth to bite on.

disc grinder on nut if you can and split before going too deep, with the heat they might loosen anyway.

morrisman1, Oct 11, 7:10pm
I was thinking about welding another nut onto the top. That way I get localised heat into it and also a fresh nut to work on.

NZTools, Oct 11, 7:42pm
Only as a last resort. the welding will heatshrink the nut onto the stud, and make it even tighter.
Go to ripco and buy an individual 19mmsingle hex socket, and hammer the flucker on if yuo have to.
Dont worry about the rattle gun, If its a cheapie it's probably only 120 ft.lbs which is bugger all. Put a bar on your strongarm.

morrisman1, Oct 11, 7:52pm
My rattle gun handles CV nuts good as gold as long as its on a reasonable compressor. I think its meant to do 250 ft.lb so isn't the biggest but still does everything I ask of it.

I find the advantage of a rattle gun is they dont try twist the socket off the nut from the torque being applied at a distance like the strong arms tend to do

NZTools, Oct 11, 7:56pm
Nah. A rattle gun will always burr a nut faster than a strongarm.
250 ftlbs isnt much. thats only a 50kg pull on a 2 foot bar.

And better sockets will prevent the problem happening in the first place.

snoopy221, Oct 11, 7:59pm
Meh best thing about a rattle gun IS.
IF.
The sucker won't undo the stud breaks.
Then ya remove the wheel-etc and fire a new set of studs in.
[Ain't qoutin foot pounds-just saying i HAVE had to undo/snap enough damn cross threaded butchered ones-and well-if it can't snap the stud-it ain't got enough foot pounds]

snoopy221, Oct 11, 8:00pm
Oh yeah and if ya ever silly enough to put a 12 point non impact socket on me gun.
Make sure it's snap-on with n unconditonal lifetime warranty.
Or throw it away.

NZTools, Oct 11, 8:01pm
if it cant undo it, it will break it off. 2300 ft/lb inch drive.poooooore poweeeer. lol

snoopy221, Oct 11, 8:05pm
Yip-and it's onlya finger on the trigger.
Not a fight ta stop when ya break thewiddle square end of the powerbar-LOL
Old 4 way brace and support the outer end on an adjustable axle stand and JUMP on the sucker with a big bit o pipe.lol

NZTools, Oct 11, 8:21pm
I'm sporting a stuffed ankle from doin something similar to that. lol

skin1235, Oct 11, 8:42pm
yet if you run a weld down just one of the edges you can spin it off with a 12 inch cresent, the heat from the weld expands the nut and if it wasn't so hot you'd spin it off with your fingers

fryan1962, Oct 11, 9:00pm
big fan of the weld

andrewph, Oct 11, 9:14pm
Steel rims i guess, drill a 4 mm hole paralel with the stud and split the nut from the top. Thats one method. Or weld a length of steel to the nut let it cool for a minute then turn it like a breaker bar. The reason for letting it cool off for a minute is to let the weld harden as it cools.
