I personally don't have a problem with WOF and my main car just falls outside the 12yr age so will continue having a WOF every 6 months. What I do have a large gripe about is the bloody cost for a 10 minute inspection $50 at VTNZ. Potential there to make $300 per hour. Does anyone know what the actual cost breakdown is. ie how much does the government collect from each warrant and how much are we getting screwed by testing companies!

So go somewhere else. You are not forced to go there just like you are not forced to have a WOF.

Govt collects GST from every inspection regardless who does it.This happens once every 6 to 12 months. How much do you spend every month on junk food, booze, smokes, sky tv,power, phone, doctor, school fees etc and not whinge about that.

The NZTA get 81 cents from every WOF issued.

More like 4 inspections per hour per inspector. Dont forget coffee breaks, toilet breaks, slow periods of clients. Now pay the lease on the building, several thousand a month, rates, gst, acc, insurance, public liabilty, wages including office staff who " just sit on their bum". Telephones, office supplies and plenty more. I dont think the price is that bad. There are some cheaper places out there as well.

Not forced to have a WOF! Thats an odd thing to say when it is a legal requirement in owning a vehicle.

A solo inspector should allow 45mins for a inspection. Factor in an hourly rate and theres your figger. VTNZ have 3 staff working on one car at a time in most cases, one above one below and one admin so that would make a 10min inspection 30min at hourly rate. For us we loose money on WoF inspections. If we were to charge hourly rate for the time taken on most older cars then then you would be winging lol

It doesn't matter what the hourly charge out rate is. $50, twice a year. What's the big deal! Would you rather sit and wait for a wof inspection for 10 minutes or an hour!

Mine,s $56, I,m more than happy with that knowing it,s all good.

.which is what most wage earning people conveniently overlook. Also relevant is the previous government very kindly giving everyone an extra week's holiday, maternity leave (office staff rather than the guys in the pit!) and introduced Kiwi saver.Who do you think pays for all that!
There are plenty of places cheaper than VTNZ but I still go there as they are polite, friendly and helpful, old or new cars/motorbike/trailer.I do challenge the need for every six months though and maybe if your car successfully passes first time, (or only has a minor hiccup such as a blown tail-light lamp) they should be able to issue a WoF for a year.If your car fails first time on a safety related issue, then you only get a six month warrant. Open to abuse maybe by the unscrupulous, but the vast majority of law abiding citizens shouldn't always have to suffer because of the minority. It might make people more aware of their responsibilities.Increase fines for being caught with bald tyres etc too.

How much do you think their premises cost! How much do you think the brake testing equipment costs! How much do you think ACC levies cost them! How much do you think power, phone, insurances cost! How much do you think all the other equipment they use costs and has to be replaced!
But - it's just about an hourly rate of pay isn't it
ffs

if i charge $ for your nice clean compliant car that passes in 10min,i still charge the same for the heap of shite that takes twice as long,i end up doing a recheck for nothing on the heap of shite.maybe you would be better off complaining about the crap cars that are allowed on our roads, also factor in the audit and compliance costs, bet you don't have a problem with computer techs charging exorbitant prices.

Those 'heaps of shite ' you describe is what keeps you garage owners in your 'toys' !If if wasnt breaking down what would happen then!

Why then is the MTA so desperate to maintain the status quo!
mtawgtn,

As MTA has always said - it's not a money issue, it's a safety issue. MTA members are the ones that get to see first-hand, the sometimes dreadful and dangerous conditions that people have their cars in when they present them for a WoF.Have a look at the facebook page for some up to date shots of some of the horror stories on the roads.

$50 is to much to pay for a W.O.F. That's why I go somewhere else, as well as the fact that if there is a problem it can be fixed there and then.

The MTA is full of it for them its a great earner having the whole NZ fleet inspected twice a year when once a year done properly would be more than enough.

Yeah, you'd think they'd want to cut down the amount of work their members are losing money on.

Have to realise they doint sell parts so no other form of income other than inspections .worth the $50 if your self employed & havent got time to wastewaiting for garage to getaroundtoit

We all know of the horror stories and we also know that there are a fair few cars around without a WoF at all.Whether the test is once a year or once every six months, isn't going to make a blind bit of difference to those people and chances are, they are the ones with ill maintained crap cars anyway. Take a walk around the car park at a Rotorua rugby game for example, (we shared a car park with our sport) and note just how many cars have either an out of date WoF or rego. No doubt somewhere there is a breakdown of the number of tests carried out and the % fail and also the reasons for those failures.

I wish I could get a wof for my little truck. COF is $118 every six months and it takes the same amount of time as a car. If it fails on the brakes then another $40.
People just dont realise the cost of running a business. Every employee has to be paid for up to 6-7 weeks of doing nothing every year plus the admin behind the scene.

my doctor charges me $54, 10 minutes, dentists charge about $1000 an hour go, and spend a day in an average work shop, & be there when the WOF man comes fof the audit, see if you thinks $50 for a wof is to much wages, acc levy, audit costs. training, 7 week paid holiday, maint on hoist, brake testing service every 12 months, computer and line rental, the list goes on
