Speed doesn't kill, poor handling does!

Bollocks
So why didn't I crash in my old Humber
Or the 66 105E Anglia
Or the 54Mk 1 Zepher
or any number of other "old" cars I have owned & or driven all over NZ.

Shite, by going on your idea (& the OP's idea), the 88 Hilux Surf I own must be a total death trap.

which WRC team did you say you drove for.
A moddified old datsun1600sss you say. what was made into, an EVO 20!
Its just a bit hard to imagine a datsun going round a 40kph corner at 160kph . Oh and stay on your side of the road.
But always willing to be shown otherwise.

No no gunhand, I suspect he meant open road /tarseal ;-)

oops, edited it to remove gravel. still.

It's HOW you drive. Not WHAT.

If poor suspention types / designs & tyres were fully responsible for getting ppl killed . then pushbikes would kill everyone that TRIED to ride them.

Actually it's the NUT behind the wheel that cause most of the unfortunate crashes, indeed there are exceptions but lack of attention, booze and fatigue are the major factors.
Cars modified ( in backyard scenarios)-a la boyracer low scraping cut springs etc heaps of shite is another reason plus the fact that lots of cars out there simply aren't legally fit to be on our roads, ie. with no WOF andhave expired registration licences
Also how many stolen cars get totaled and their drivers/passengers as well in lots of cases, eg the 13 year old driver that crashed and killed himself and the passengers baled out and left the scene, what does that tell you!
Total lack of responsibility on all counts it is .in my book.
Lots of drivers just purely and simply are not capable of handling the power and handling capabilities of our modern cars.
The older cars at least let you know when you are approaching their limits well before critical limits are reached.

Easy-fix ideas. Limit learner driver's HP/kW engine output while on a learners or restricted license and make defensive driving courses compulsory for all drivers. Include field trips to the morgue to check out the remains of fresh motor accident victims.

Limited output doesn't work cause it's factory limited output. You can stick in a turbo motor very easy and let er rip. Besides one of out most common cars is a V6 commy and falcoon which are hardly slugs , teens wrap single cam hondas and old celicas round trees daily, power is no boundary to not being able to drive.

Interesting thing we were discussing the other day is that no one travels gravel roads anymore or has a skid on them while no one is around. A lot of young guys learned pretty fast after putting there hillman hunters in a ditch. Now it's "oh hey guys look I can do 200 on paved tarmac in my honda, oh shit it's sliding I'll just leap on the brakes and it will stop in no time." ABS and stability control make people feel invincible as well, I equipped it to my right foot years ago.

I was thinking around 40hp ! Morries weren't much more than that were they! A turbo would stick out like the proverbial in a WOF inspection.

Speed alone is never the cause of an accident, there is no question however that the faster you are going if you do hit something the greater the damage.
