Revelations for the Transmission Gully Road as well. After a zillion years of consultants and decisions and consultants and appeals and more consultants and plan changes and more consultants the powers have now engaged some more consultants to check up on the offer from private enterprize to build it and put a toll on it to pay for it.woopty dooo, this was the original offer a zillion years ago by three large roading/construction companies that was refused by the gubbermint, possibly because they know what they are doing and didnt use consultants huh !

Sorry but I just don't believe that $62 million figure, I suspect you read a typo, $6.2 million would be closer the mark and of course that still depends where the road is being constructed.

NZ has always had sh-t roads. About a year ago they "resealed" our road & a few nearby only to be worse. The roads were fine before hand and now they are rough and stoney surfaced now. Just nothing but noise where as they used to be smooth. And other roads around Hamilton (especially busy roads) are starting to get potholes which get bigger every day. Been like that since early this year & still nothing done with them - just getting worst. And yet they go and spend money "repairing" roads that dont need repairs (like OP has said).

Oh and forgot to say, they didnt even come back to sweep the roads so it took a few months for the excess stones to dissapear and still get the odd stones pulling up when its hot (melting tar). Im sure its those stupid "road inspection" people that drive around who waste our money. They obviously dont know what roads need repairs and just drive around then put a pin on a map and say go seal this road.

Contractors must come back and do that and check again after that. Its part of the whole deal of doing it. People cause most road accidents but poor roading sure can help. Try being a motocycle rider and the poor way they do roads. You can not rely on humans to do it right Im affraid.

How come they can't make a road that doesn't melt on a warm (not hot) day. The tar melts and you can smell it on the bike, the stone chips come off and it is like riding on ice with the melted tar in summer and smooth, slippery surface in winter. I am told it is because they cut the tar with kerosine to make it go further and cut cost. The road is shot within 6 months. Geoff

thats not all there is to it tho
its the duration that roadworks are managed to be spun out to that also causes concern over "rorting"
speedy_11,

If the works take far longer than expected, generally the contractor is loosing money, not rorting. The bids are worked on a relatively tight timeframe in order to meet the lowest price conforming method commonly used. The contractor is committed to that bid, and cannot simply continue to increase the price.

Blacktop ( appropraite name too )Just looked like 1 big family to me when they were having lunch under a tree on the side of the road up my way.

Just for you.
Seen the new movie! It's called "Under Construction".
The reasonably wide road outside our property was resealed earlier this year and I was surprised at how none of the chip was holding hands and how thin the tar seemed to be. The tar was very obvious visually instead of largely being hidden. Both seemed to be to be at the very lower end of the barely acceptable level however I blame whomever scoped the job more than the Contractor.

Sub-contractor, perhaps. Contractor, no way.

Should have gone with a rigid pavement instead of flexible right from the get go. And if transit nz (or whoever owns the roads) wanted to save money and get good bang for buck . then they need to have someone that has practical skills and a life time of experience (f**k qualifications - in this job it just tells someone that you can retain information to spit out later) in road building. He'd be advisor to the board that says yes or no to expenditure (or whatever) but importantly - see through BS minimalistic patchups being offered by the bidders. He'd not get introuble either when he called a spade a spade. They need to make examples of some of these consulting engineer pricks as well. If it don't work - then they are made to pay for the fix etc. The roads have gone like everything else in this country . no sense of responsibility and always someone elses fault. And if you dare stand up and say something in 'real bloke terms' - you get put down by the politically correct mob and other fag-groups who's agenda is further emasculation of the kiwi breed. Bring back biarch slapping and the cat, I say. Lol!

what really annoys me is the practice of milling the road where the potholes are, adding a stabiliser then compacting it and sealing it, Invariably the transition from the existing seal to the repair is rough. From my personal experience in civil construction if you dont fix the foundation, the finished layer will always break down. With the hundreds of thousands of dollars I spend a year on RUC I expect better!Anyone know if I can bill nzta for excessive wear and tear on my gear!

Bet your talking about their effort as you come into Mataura, gunhand; she,s a top effort allright. What I don,t understand is how they can be down here for 3 months every year, payng accomodation , etc and outpriceing 2 local branch,s of national companys. They must be makeing a profit or they would,nt keep comeing back. So who,s haveing a lend of who! And as for another companys work of seal patching,( digout,s) on the Gore-Tapanui road, well bugger me, the roadmen of old with wheelbarrows did better.

I suppose you have to start with those who draw up the original specifications for the foundations and the surfacing. It should be someone who at least knows what they are doing. If the roads are to be improved, then macadam instead of chip seal must be specified, the substructure must be sufficient and an independent inspector must sign off on each and every stage of the job. No, I'm not a civil engineer (uncivil, sometimes) but I am a Marine Engineer, and shipbuilding specifications are for the long life of the vessel (usually 25 years), the safety of the operators and the environment and the profit of the builder and owners - seems to work. Maybe someone needs to take 'ownership' of the roads and there should be an independent 'classification' society who sets the standards (these are insurers in my industry). Who insures the roads!

"Macadam instead of chipseal must be specified"!
Do you understand what Macadam is! Do you realize that NZ road construction uses the Macadam method of building roads with chip seal as a surface sealer!
And what do you think is the lifespan of the different components of a road pavement!

The yanks built Seaveiw road Petone in WW2(AFAIK)from concreteI remember it well ,lasted unti 80s whenit was ripped up & replaced with chip seal .
