Waiouru and ya don't need anti freeze-mmkay.
[Suppose topping off the halogen fluid suffices]

splinter67, Dec 2, 12:56pm
These vehicles are known for bad cooling systems

snoopy221, Dec 2, 12:57pm
And Beyond ANY Doubt at the mileage for a radiator clean out-or replacement-
And a standard issue maintainence item on those vehicles.

karmaangel, Dec 2, 12:57pm
$7995 I always check my car
Water.oil, Trans oil, tyres, brake pads etc etc
I was going on the mechanics advice with the antifreeze, cal me stupid call me what you like but I didn't have any reason to not belivie a mechanic.

noswalg, Dec 2, 12:58pm
And when did you last service it and what did that entail!

karmaangel, Dec 2, 1:03pm
When it went for its warrant a couple months ago and it had a full service

noswalg, Dec 2, 1:05pm
Full service! So they checked your cooling system then and it was fine!

kazbanz, Dec 2, 1:05pm
You did look up the OP's location before posting that diddn't ya matee!
You're just splitting hairs though arent ya! You know darn well that in mostplaces in NZ"anti freeze" is primarilly used as corrossion inhibiter.

splinter67, Dec 2, 1:05pm
Id be talking to your mechanic not the car dealer by the sounds of it he does not have a clue

kazbanz, Dec 2, 1:06pm
So why wasn't it given a full cooling system flush which is definitely part of a FULL service.

wind.turbine, Dec 2, 1:07pm
for one,you NEED anti freeze in it.
two, it is very obvious when there is none in it as it just looks like water.
three, you should have been able to tell something was wrong if you had seen that it was very dirty looking way before it started over heating which would have been a hint to dump it and refill with anti freeze mix.
If you don't check the big things like water and oils once a week then of course things are not going to last long and things will be happening with out you knowing of it.
my first advice would be get some one to teach you how to maintain your car before you send another to its grave!

karmaangel, Dec 2, 1:10pm
So what could be wrong with it now then, seeing you guys know so much!
It said it was overheating but on inspection everything was cold. Radiator bottle was empty so refilled it and carried on. Then all of a sudden it started making a noise every time I accelerated and then lost power and stopped. Had to be jumped 3x before we got to the mechanic. When we got there there was oily stuff all over the back of car (from the exhaust !) and he said its not good cos its obviously overheating internally now

karmaangel, Dec 2, 1:11pm
And engine light came on

meathead_timaru, Dec 2, 1:13pm
It's not splitting hairs to be factually correct. Corrosion inhibitor and antifreeze are two different things used for two different functions entirely. Only one could have prevented this problem, no!

karmaangel, Dec 2, 1:14pm
It was always clean! Till it overheated!

meathead_timaru, Dec 2, 1:17pm
"Full serrvice". Such a generic meaningless term. No doubt it was mentioned you were on a budget too. Of course, had they checked the cooling system, noticed the lack of maintenance and sought to rectify it, they'd have been labelled "rip off bastards doing unnecessary work because I'm a woman!". Sometimes, you just can't win.

phillip.weston, Dec 2, 1:18pm
petrol or diesel!

snoopy221, Dec 2, 1:19pm
Lady it's a van-K the radiator is rather hidden down under-K
The actual condition of the cooling system is where you need a COMPETENT and EXPERIENCED mechanic.
The actual condition of the cooling systemcan be TOTALLY diferrent from the plastic bottle you top up.

phillip.weston, Dec 2, 1:20pm
also even a year ago $8000 is too much for a 16 year old Estima. Personally myself I would go back to the dealer and see if they can come to the party - I am sure they had a healthy margin in that car!

karmaangel, Dec 2, 1:20pm
No they wouldn't have from me. I would have been grateful that they picked it up. As for other woman.I can't speak for them

meathead_timaru, Dec 2, 1:20pm
If the reservoir is empty, you need to fill the radiator. not just the reservoir. And you should let it cool - it's a really bad idea to put cold water in a hot engine's cooling system. Crack McCracky can appear.

karmaangel, Dec 2, 1:21pm
And for the record the mechanic we have now is to the one that told us that we didn't need it and when the radiator and thermostat was replaced, antifreeze WAS put in

scoobeey, Dec 2, 1:21pm
so u bought a toyota steamer . i would have had the rad rodded on one of these if i was unlucky to own one lol

meathead_timaru, Dec 2, 1:21pm
Apologies for the stereotyping, but I did say "sometimes".

meathead_timaru, Dec 2, 1:22pm
I didn't realise it came down to luck! I Hope Our Luck Doesn't End Now!
