This is an unfortunate situation for you karmaangel and one you probably don't deserve.
Lessons to take from it are: -The cooling system of a vehicle is very important and it needs to be maintained in a good condition and that includes antifreeze/corrosion inhibiter. -When you buy a second hand vehicle you need to make sure it is in a good state of service right from the day you get it. -Your mechanic has let you down somewhat in this instance although I'm of the mind that you need to take responsibility for the servicing of the vehicle yourself; if not hands on, then at least instruct your mechanic on what you want checked/done. -All workshop manuals contain maintenance schedules. These are an invaluable source of information for maintaining your vehicle in good condition.

I know u can't put cold water into a hot radiator. We had the car jump started and THEN the water was put in. Then we carried on slow as and the car kept losing power after a while and stopped. We jump started the car again and took it straight to the mechanic. Before it stopped each time, when we were losing power it was making a hell of a noise and the engine light came on

We brought the car through a car sales yard. Not second Hand from off the street

LOOK at where they are.Anti freeze for THEM was and is required and may have contributed to the problem. Also again you ARE splitting hairs You know full well that the two purposes are served by one product in most cases. Its KNOWN as anti freeze to the general public but has a primary job in most cases of inhibiting internal corossion. Why aregue a moot point. The OP lives in an area that is regularly below zero degrees.

Sorry, that's a little confusing.
Why did it need to be jump started! Was the battery flat from cranking! Jump starting doesn't cool the hot engine either. I wouldn't put cold water into an engine that had overheated for probably at least an hour.
Regardless, it really wasn't very wise to continue driving it especially given those symptoms.

Dealer or not you still bought a second hand car!

Yet you STILL carried on driving.

Translating this page. It overheated-it was not repaired-it survived the FIRST overheat to overheat again and again until it destroyed itself. Translating losing power making noise and check engine lights coming on
Even though fataly dead the steamer was jump started to be further destroyed by being driven.

oh no. its a enema. lets put afew facts hereyou purchased this enema 12 month ago not knowing it was a enema . Did you ever change or add water plain water to the cooling system! also what year and what engine has the enema got! numberplate will tell via carjam.

Yep it was a good little battler, but even toyotas reach the point of no return when the radiator transforms into a boiler!

What else could we have done! We were on the side of the road with four children in the car and had to get the car to the mechanic. If we had of left it on the side of the road it would have been stolen. The car first needed to be jumped cos having the hazards on flattens the car. Always has. Then when we got going again (like 30km p/hr) it started losing power and just stopped twice more. Where it first broke down was not in a safe area! Lots of huge trucks whizzing past. We had to get the car to the mechanic. As everyone will know the road from Taihape thru to Waiouru is always extremely busy!

so you had a car there to jump it! why oh why did you not just tow it the rest of the way.

On the very slim chance that somebody would steal an overheating enima from the side of the road maybe that would of been the best outcome for you, it is insured right!

http://www.carjam.co.nz/report/!ref=38868471 ok its a 2.4 enema you wont destroy the engine by adding cold water to it as that thinghas spaghetty like cooling system by the time the water gets to teh radiator and eingine it be hot. so this clears up onetru fact. Now the next one this poofigter was worth no more then 2500$ and a dealer should make 3 grand is aceptable as they have to obey some warranty and make a lifing thats 5500$ what this heap should have cost for real maximum.

ok at least this one is petrol! hopefully you don't have a blown head gasket. Get cooling system sorted out and then hope like heck it hasn't done any damage to the engine.
snoopy221,
Dec 2, 1:41pm
What else could we have done! Dealt with it as a complete cooling system failure and put it on a tow truck. After all towing is cheaper than engine replacement

How nice for them. That didn't cause the cooling system corrosion they've mentioned though, did it!

meathead am I reading right you are saying not having anti-freeze (which is a corrosion inhibiter) will not cause corrosion! Bollocks! With a mix of iron, alloy, copper and of course water and some pockets of air there is of course going to be some corrosion going on!
karmaangel,
Dec 2, 1:47pm
If it is a blown head gasket what is involved in fixing this!

go to my other thread and answer the questions i assume you dont know mutch about cars . this can help in small claims, unless you realy are at fault your self.
