Also we have had numerous problems with the car ever since we have had it. For example if you park the van up overnight and go to drive off "forwards" in the morning you take the handbrake off and you go to drive and you can't and you have to apply a lot of gas then there is a loud bang as the brakes release. But if you parked it up overnight and go to "reverse" out in the morning you have no problem. We told him this and he said it wasn't his problem !

We have got a new mechanic now, it was our old one who said about the anti freeze. We took it to our new mechanic when it overheated. We won't know what is wrong with it till we go and see him in the morning

How about an air lock in the cooling system this would explain the temp gauge fluctuating

F F S Change mechanics. Preferably to one who can. Do pre purchase inspections.
Repair faulty alternator battery issues so you don't have to carryand USE jumperleads
Repair brakes PROPERLY
And one who is not STUPID enough to leave a bottom hosed thermostat out at ANY time.
Incedentaly ya still ain't given the MILEAGE.

He is a well known, reputable mechanic in our town. The old one who said we didn't need antifreeze was useless yes but this new one isn't

I asked you if you knew what was wrong with it yet then saw I missed your post

.wait, so immediately after the temp gauge sky rocketed you took the radiator cap off! That shouldn't be possible even at normal operating temp. If the coolant in the radiator was cold but the temp gauge said it was cooking. that's probably an air lock. ie - the coolant isn't circulating through the engine to keep it at operating temp.

Yes. Someone mentioned that it could have been an air lock. If that's the case then what does that mean! Wold it explain the noise the car started making and then it losing power and stalling!

Don't pay 11k for 2001 odyssey. you can get the 04/05 shape for that sort of money.

The noise and the losing power and stalling where caused by being overheatedthe air lock could have been the cause

A year ago you purchased an old van done almost 200K and then you expect it to run you to Hastings, Palmy, Wanganui etc every couple of weeks.unbelievable! however now that it's stuffed you can either borrow say $2000 to get you back on the road BUT then all you have is the same old fighter owing you more , or write it off and get yourself a much later model that might stand up to all the kms you do!. if you have a good relationship with MTF they may be able to help.or maybe go back to the dealer and ask him to help assist you into another vehicle [don't blame him for the mess you are in!]just be careful not to dig yourself in the hole too far.if you do get offered a deal MAKE SURE you run it past someone who knows a bit about these things.good luck.

OP-You have owned a vehicle 12 months and at least 20000km The Vehicle developed a cooling system fault after we assume 17000km driving (given it was after the last WOF) Which given the specifics of that vehicle needed adressing right away. A competant mechanic would have taken the correct steps to ensure the vehicle cooling system was properly checked, cleaned and filled with anti freeze. They would definitely NOT have removed the thermostat and advised to to carry on driving. With your aproval the mechanic then went ahead and took remedial action by replacing the radiator. NO reputable mechanic would then just put water in the radiator nor would they fail to bleed the cooling system propperly You then elected to carry on driving after the vehicle stopped dead. You then elected to carry on driving a second time after it had unseized enough to run. Can you honestly not see how you need to accept responsibility for your actions!

Hey guys -I was thinking like you guys were that 8k for a 95 estima lucida etc was drug money. It does look though that out of dauckland dealers are getting 5-8k for them. It would be interesting too to find out if the $8000 included a trade in vehicle. Ie it makes a big difference if say a 1989 200000km miutzi eterna was traded in and the yard paid the op 3k for it.
