lada, while the setup shown is perhaps not ideal, it will still 'shape' the air better than having the flow coming over a 90 degree turn. The air having to come from behind the opening will effect air velocity a bit, but perhaps not as dramatically as some thought.
Yes vizard did all sorts of these things and certainly implied it was the way to go, however more recently the quality of the air has been shown to have as much benefit (of not more) as velocity. For SU's there are now stacks as low as maybe 10-15 mm's that get very nearly the same benefit, with the advantage you have far more clearance for the filter.
This topic is so complex that unless you actually have you own mill/lathe, flow bench and dyno, everyone will just be parroting something they heard.like I am.

for OZZ1 & LADA DUDE page 118 of 21 Century Performance by Julian Edgar will put you on the right track. He states a 25% increase for a flared tube over a straight tube. Buy the book and read, and understand it. I understand a lot of it but will always listen to other people.

LOL then I must have an oddball Surf here because it's constantly swinging it's butt about on roundabouts much like a hoola hoop girl.
FFS bill we actually had our own engine dyno, for testing our midget engine, sometimes you just have to go with someone else's data, or you keep on reinventing the wheel.

yes he does. buy the book and find out who he is his tesring is practical. you had a dyno and yet you ask me to produce test results! do you own testing, that is how you get an advantage, and start winning.

If I remember correctly julian edgar used to be one of or the first editors of zoom magazine back when everything in the mag was for performance only,it's still only his opinion at the end of the day, even dyno results don't mean something is better than something else, you really need real world testing as well as dynos,if you have a track car then lap times increasing or decreasing will tell you the real story wether or not said modification will work,if the dyno tells you it just made 40hp more that doesn't equate to faster lap times.
