What is this intake /shape called?

I've heard them referred to as horns.

bullock, Dec 8, 6:44pm
Velocity stack.

timbowe1, Dec 8, 6:50pm
Bell Mouth.

jmma, Dec 8, 6:51pm
Venturi

ghost-roaster, Dec 8, 7:48pm
Trumpets.

bill-robinson, Dec 9, 5:11am
+2(free performance increase)

pollymay, Dec 9, 5:12am
flux capacitor

the-lada-dude, Dec 9, 6:07am
call it what ever you like, but the shape shown in that photo has been proven to be friggin near as bad as a straight pipe !.esp in that particular set up. a high proportion of the air flow is being forced to come at rear and varying angles to the side of the pipe, and i would say the filter end plate is too close to the trumpet end face.In fact that is one lousy intake system

bill-robinson, Dec 9, 9:25am
proof please

doug207, Dec 9, 10:04am
It's positioned in the wrong place relative to the filter.
I'd be surprised it it does anything as it's going to be about 10 miles away from the TB or intake ports.

However, velocity stacks are awesome when used correctly (in practical), even if they're a constant compromise (in theory)

bill-robinson, Dec 9, 10:20am
that is your summary. I still would like to read the article that it came from.

ozz1, Dec 9, 10:20am
a pretty blue thing (that looks cool and costs money) that will make absolutely no increase in performance.

the-lada-dude, Dec 9, 11:28am
owww, come on bill-r,there's shit loads of documented dyno proof that would show you that, the trumpet shown is far from ideal. also the filter system shown is aggravating the flow coming from behind the trumpet lip.
It's my opinion that if the o/d of the trumpet lip was flush with the back face of the filter housing, air flow could be up by as much as 3%. the only thing that could leave egg on my face would be a sonic induced compression wave, ( although even moving the trumpet, it should still be there ) but I would say it would be over a very limited rpm range, and the filter is probably going to damp some of this pulse out

it's also known as a ram tube, but why it's inside an air filter element!

purple666, Dec 9, 12:10pm
They are called all sorts of things but what they actually are is a venturi.

the-lada-dude, Dec 9, 12:59pm
NOPE !there's no venturi in there

bill-robinson, Dec 9, 1:08pm
the active words "it's my opinion" sort of make me wonder.
in my experience i have seen diferent results. Who do you think has more credibility!

ozz1, Dec 9, 2:48pm
^^^^please elaborate on what benefits .this system would make. im not taking the piss but am interested thanks ian

the-lada-dude, Dec 9, 3:43pm
yes that's right, " in my opinion "which is just as credible as yours, have you got dyno results to prove one way or the other !every engine has its own idiosyncrasies, but that set up is shit ! and can easily be improved upon. those trumpets are something you would see on old amal carbs or GP stuff of the "50's

the-lada-dude, Dec 9, 3:44pm
ask bill-r

ozz1, Dec 9, 3:49pm
cheers lada dude.im with you on this one. see post 15.and i did ask bill-r.

bill-robinson, Dec 9, 5:21pm
see post #12, show me "PROOF" not opinions, I await your reply with evidence

clark20, Dec 9, 10:12pm
David Vizard showed the best results are when the end plate is 2 times the diameter of the bellmouth away from the front plate

snoopy221, Dec 9, 10:21pm
Reality is they belong on the intakes of multiple carbs- I.E. Side drafts- Oh and they DO WORK.
As per post@26

dave653, Dec 10, 8:41am
Not always. I'm playing with different intakes at the moment. I made an airbox about 20 years ago for my triple SU's. Toyed with various other things, made some ramtubes which I've just shortened to 3 inches. I bogged around the 'bell mouth' as the tubes had a flare on them, to make it more rounded for smooth airflow entry. I even cut up one of the wifes s/s mesh sieves to use as filters. from stuff bigger than a midge.
Seat of the pants testing proves the airbox, with a weber KnN filter at the front, works better. I know. it should be the ramtubes that do the trick. but they don't.
Every engine is different, evrything you screw to them need testing first. that blue thing may work, it may not. But as above. in that position I don't think it's worth buying.
