i done plenty disconnect battery get a big same thickness plate larger then the hole grind chassy clean and weld the patch fully round on the chassy and go for reinspection thats all. then paint it after it passed the wof.

Not so easy, the hole was on a relatively complex curved piece, my panelbeating skills only just good enough to fabricate a curve on the patch I cut.Can of worms job - I had a sneaking suspicion that my thought it was going to be easy was a mistake. P1ss-poor design, the cross-member is smaller than the side rails, they made it so that they line up at the top, then curved out the bottom of the cross-member to flare it to line up with the bottom of the rail.End result - stuff gets in, runs downhill to where the cross-member meets the rail, and can't get out.Amazing that it lasted nearly 30 years. I whacked some paint on my repair.They can belt it with something if they suspect it's been done with bog and newspaper.

This is the second thread on welding undercar of late . and the rort of $100's of dollars later for what amounts to a couple of dabs and push with a torch by someone certified. I reckon you can negate all of this hassle by employing a bit of early intervention. Get your car up or over something and have a good look and poke around. Deal to problems before some cretin discovers it for you and lands you in a world of pain by putting you on the 'needs repair by a pro' radar.

Anything that attaches inside or beyond the structural area that is considered in danger of falling off /dangerous to pedestrians /or easily stressed like a faulty towbar WILL need to be fixed or removed depending on exactly what "IT" is ********** 1 sticky bit can be air bag trigger sensors outside of the structural area

WOF passed - 6 month stay of execution for the (rusty) old beast. The FIL is 77 and still uses it for gardening work he does for beer money, but he's going to pack it in before next winter I think.Getting the WOF just made his day - he'll be happy to sell it for scrap if it fails next time.

Are you a certified welder or panelbeater with a shop, What qualifications & reputation do you have so that the AVI can trust that the photo's of the weld ARE in fact for THAT car & not another that was done some other time in the past. You could have simply scrapped some shite off the chassis & repainted it with stiff tape & underseal for all they would know by visual inspection

Most of the cross members in jappa pickups are like this. Its an engineering design principle to have the cross member the same size as the main frame rail at the join points. Its a beancounter act that then tapers the cross member to the skinnyest it can be in the middle, haha! I've got a modified jappa chassis under a pre-war coupe toy . you get to know all about them when you are busy in there chopping, joining and fabricating your way through a car build. Luxes (I know about these because I am using a lux chassis) are a cu*t size. The only RHS you can get to match their main rail cross section is the little used size of 127mmx51mmx3.5. You won't find this size in many outfits steel racks because most stuff is made out of either 100 or the 150 stuff. So to get ahold of it you will end up buying an entire 8m length, grrrrrr! And have enough left for a whole lotta hotrods, lol!

I've helped build chassis's before where 100x50 was used as cross members . inside 127 tall frame rails. The top of the 100 was run flush with the top of the 127 stuff. The bottom of the 100 stuff was made to connect to the bottom of the 127 by use of a couple of triangle shaped pieces . to make it flare downwards sorta thing. Hard to explain but hopefully you get the idea. Much like the factory did. Churbro.

BECAUSE (now thats shouting) . anyways . it's in the VRM (wof regs) somewhere that the repair must be sighted by an AVI before any paint etc is applied, (bare metal inspection) Also been told that by many AVI's in the past.

I work in the panel industry as well and from time to time weld up rust holes etc. Yes many workshops want to see the repair before being covered but how excactly does the AVI know if its good weld! It may look good, it maybe holding quite well but is it a proper weld!Unless it dropped off when tapped or played with I doubt most would know really. And again for certifacation reasons that lot want a photo history of welding etc before filling, again, what does a photo really tell ya! A few people been caught out having work done on dead cars then trying to get them certed only to be asked "whats under the paint" and to prove it.OOPS. And as for chassis welding, seems to be a grey area.

Yep 'seeing' the bare repair avoids the newspaper/sellotape/ bog /wire mesh repairs from getting through a wof.
At least it stops those 1's from sneaking through at that point
