Weld on chassis.

My FIL's '80s ute failed a WOF due to rust in chassis. There's just one $2 coin sized hole in a rear cross member, the rest of the chassis seems perfectly fine, WOF shop just drew around the spot with chalk.
WOF form just mentions the rust, no diagrams, no mention of need for certified repair.
He's bringing it over later today. It's easy as to get to (apart from need for some upside-down welding), I was just going to cut out the rust, weld a plate in.Are the nannies going to get me for this! One time I had to get some rust fixed after a WOF fail, but in that case the WOF shop specifically stated that it needed to be certed.Quotes for that little repair were $800, $450, and $60 &GST.

If it's any easier, just put a patch bigger than the hole over it and weld.

daryl14, Dec 9, 11:33am
Or get a replacement cross member from a wrecker and bolt it in.

chebry, Dec 9, 12:01pm
Easier for a clown like you but cutting back to clean metal an butt welding a properly fitted patch is the correct way to go

rob_man, Dec 9, 1:17pm
Too late now but if you drill a hole bigger than the rust and put a rubber bung in it nobody would blink an eye.
Just sayin'

johnf_456, Dec 9, 1:24pm
Or put a bung in like above and go to a different garage. The wof system will not say exactly what it failed on with location details etc, size, photo etc of info about the rust.

Just saying

Why are you copying rob_man's post!

nukhelenc, Dec 9, 2:16pm
Hey you wanna see the dribble him and his side kick dribble in other parts of the MB. So its no surprise it dribbles here.

bellky, Dec 9, 3:05pm
You're a long way from your cooking class Helen. too many bourbons!

kevymtnz, Dec 9, 3:09pm
fill the hole with weld after cutting rust back to steel and take photo and underseal

ozz1, Dec 9, 3:09pm
^^^^heydont callhim names.eg helen. thatsbullying.

jmma, Dec 9, 3:14pm
Not here it isn't, call him anything you like, eg gurlfriend.dud.bubs.(o-
:

poppajn, Dec 9, 3:15pm
Any welding on the chassis require certifcation I thought. On our transport stuff we have to for a COF anyway. Maybe light vechicles are different.

ozz1, Dec 9, 3:17pm
nah.twas a kick for the troll. ertrolls:)

johnf_456, Dec 9, 3:25pm
its adding to it

mugenb20b, Dec 9, 3:33pm
You guys are funny.

trader_84, Dec 9, 3:47pm
Just do what you were going to do and see how you go. There's so much scaremongering floating around about welding on/repairing chassis's etc on light vehicles. Gawd - you'd be hard pressed to find anything running around on a private vehicle/car rego that even a cheap little MIG wouldn't be able to blow holes in the thickest part of the frame. If you are a half decent welder - you should have no problems. On another track . check out the rest of the old mans chassis closely. These sorts of pickups . if (when) they rust - they will 9 times out of 10 rust from the inside out. You might need to go around with a nail . small hammer . scribe etc. You know what I mean.

nukhelenc, Dec 9, 4:03pm
You need help i think

mrfxit, Dec 9, 4:26pm
Pretty much anything welded aftermarket on a commercial vehicle needs a cert.
Domestic vehicles on a WOF only need a welding cert if the problem area is within the TOTAL area of the suspension mounting points fore & aft.
outside of the mounting points, they will grizzle like an uppity troll but knowing the regs soon kicks them to the kerb, (that applys to most welded body panels (roof etc) within that area as well.)

mrfxit, Dec 9, 4:29pm
Slightly alternative thoughts but yep still works.

The "key" is how tidy will the end result be!

All this depends TOTALLY on WHERE the hole is & how big (DUH, of course)

mrfxit, Dec 9, 4:31pm
Thats because the inside of the rail, stays wet/moist for a lot longer then the outside & damp dirt/dust can build up without being disturbed.

mrfxit, Dec 9, 4:33pm
NOT allowed to seal /cover the weld before the inspector sights the repair.

mm12345, Dec 9, 5:39pm
So I cut it out, cut and shaped a piece of steel to fit, welded it in, about to finish off and have a beer, gave it a bit of a clean up, and of course then I found another hole.Time to give up the fancy stuff - I just welded a patch over it, and we'll see if that will do.It probably needs the cross member replaced - it's welded to the side rails though.Could make a new one perhaps out of some channel, but I expect that then it would need to be certified - not worth it.Was an $1800 farm ute about 8 years ago, done god knows how many km, worth a few hundred for parts probably.

grangies, Dec 9, 5:39pm
Do that, and and take photos of your grinding out, then the plate you put in with the bare welds showing, before any paint or underseal goes on.

Then show the WOF people the pics on your camera as evidence.

mrfxit, Dec 9, 6:01pm
Any AVI that accepts that from an unknown person needs to resit their certs.
The pic's could be from anybodysvehicle
