Gee - Í'm glad that at least I can open the door of my S40 physically with the key (just like in the olden days).Bit of an inconvenience, but just think about all those cars which don't acutally have the ''luxury'' of a key hole.

More than some cars are worth

I paid $600.00 for a Lexus Key ex Toyota.
The worst so far was a Peugeot, the key (before coding) was about $900.00.

this.says.it.all That defence of the high prices holds no water with Clive Matthew-Wilson, editor of the Dog & Lemon

The remote fobs on my old Clio both died, the microswitches broke. So I had to manually unlock and lock the car. Still had to use the broken keys as they had the transponder in them. I was too scared to go to the Renault Stealership to price up replacements so just sold the car haha.

It is possible to bring the cost down a bit by being a bit diligent about what you buy and from whom.I did a replacement key for a Peugeot for $120; $85 of that was for the NZ locksmith to code the chip.
One part of that job was the retrieval ofthe car's PIN code from PSA, the guy here quoted $100 just to get it.I sourced the same service ex-UK for 6 quid.
etc.

Maybe I should quite my job and write an average book on the grocery industry in New Zealand about how much goods cost and where to buy. Then become a consultant like Mr Matthew-Wilson, he has seems to have a ton of spare time, seems like a better plan than 50+ hour work weeks.

IMHO the problem is the local stealers who try to make there years earnings out of one sale.I'm sure that in most cases key codes are only a computer click away for the stealer so 10 minues work at most therefore a fee of say $20 would be justified but not $500 -$1000 which they seam to think is appropriate.
The more the local stealers do that the more the customer will shop overseas.

To be fair, I would think a total charge incl. key ought not to be more than $100 for any make of car at the very most. Anything more is pure thievery. Unfortunately we always expect to be ripped off by car franchiseholders for parts.

Everyone wants the technology but nobody wants to pay for it. Go back to unlocking your cars with a non remote key then.

Ought to be a cheap cost for what is a cheap item and cheap and simple technology.

Technology is supposed to make life easierfor us, but in reality it creates more problems .Lose your key on holiday & try getting replacement fromdealer ,all shut up for the duration. At least with oldmanual key a locksmith can make new oneon the spotfrom his van .

Price you pay for security I guess. The cars they're talking about keys being expensive for are many many times harder to steal than those who still rely on plain metal keys to do the job. There's a reason why certain makes and ages of cars are more frequently stolen. It'd just be nice if we saw some kind of reduction in our insurance premiums for the lower risk!

Well instead of all moaning about the cost of replacement keys, take far better care of the ones you have, in most instances they last indefinitely if cared for, and pay more attention to what you are doing and don't lose them. Not rocket science is it.Typical that everyone criticises the cost without knowing what investment is needed by the service providers, as it says in the article. If you don't want to pay the costs associated with this you should have taken far better care of your 80's and 90's cars, or perhaps become permanent pedestrians, cyclists or public transport users.

Your post isnt the brightest. There are plenty like me would far prefer a simple car with out all the rediculous mod cons! Nothing wrong with the old style keys, you can always buy a burglar alarm and central locking to go with it and still get a copy of your key for under $20. $600 for a key is a joke and any one who thinks otherwise isnt all there.

be cheaper to rip the friggen smart key BS out n chuck in a conventional ignition barrel. if insurance comp demand these types of security, it should be part of your policy cover so just pay your excess.

So you will be happy to go back to a Radio only in the car, nio Air Con, Manual Windows, no ABS etc.get with the real world, most of us embrace technology. If people are careless with their keys and lose them, thats their fault, they are just looking for someone to blame. If you dont want the cost, look after your items better. So you are simple then, I get that.

most of the time I like your posts. This post from you is nonsense. Do you think people purposely lose their car keys. Oh Im bored today I think I'll go hide my car keys so I cant find them lol Come on franc, try to tell me you have never lost anything in your life! Does that mean you are careless and deserve the hassle of having lost something! How does anyone go through life with out having misplaced their car keys or their wallet or their watch or their etc. Hell, what happens if you have your car keys get stolen in a burglary etc. Not the burglars fault but your own fault for being careless you reckon! Sheesh, losing car keys shouldnt be a reason for a company to blantantly rip you off when your trying to get a replacement!
lk104,

You dont know what you are talking about, it isnt companies blatantly ripping off anyone. Most franchises pricing is set by the Manufacturer and if you think the Dealer is sitting on huge margins for things like keys, then your ignorant like a lot of others, you should get your facts before making accusations.

Fav quote taken from your profile "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt" You should take your own advise, I see you're a toyota parts supplier so IMO you have a biased view on what is a fair and reasonable cost to consumers.
