ACC Levy!

I recently bought a diesel van - generally to do the dirty work that i don't want to use my other cars for. So, I own 3 cars. I had to pay rego today for the van. Waiting in the queue at the PO, I looked closer at the breakdown of the $417,39 per year for rego, and probably said "Holy Sh1t" too loud as they old dear in front of me almost fainted. ACC take $311.38 per annum out of the $417.49! That's almost 75%!
I assume it is good to be "covered" in the event of an accident in case of personal injury, but I can only drive 1 of 3 cars at any time, why should I pay 75% for each vehicle (assuming a std petrol car is hit with the same tax!). Anyway, that's my gripe for the day.
Sh1t and pay, the kiwi way!

^ ".I assume it is good to be "covered" in the event of an accident in case of personal injury."

Yep it's a brilliant system. The alternative is far worse imo.

haventrader, Dec 18, 12:10pm
My argument is paying that kind of tax 3 times! Oh by the way, I have not started on the amount they take off my salary either yet!

bellky, Dec 18, 12:13pm
Yep. Your choice to own (pay licence fees) on three vehicles. I'm not here to ague with you haventrader. :)

dave653, Dec 18, 12:55pm
And they have the balls to cry poverty! Bollocks, last time I heard, they had over 11 BILLION dollars in the coffers.

luxy, Dec 18, 1:25pm
Bigest rip off in NZ. You can only drive one car at a time. We are getting shafted for our hobby!

berg, Dec 18, 1:48pm
Try paying for two cars and two big bikes when one of the bikes only does 10,000km a year, one of the cars does 900km a year and of the other to only the bike gets every day use. Rego on fuel that way its true user pays.

daryl14, Dec 18, 2:33pm
And don't forget, you're paying to fix up all the thugby neanderthals and pretty much everyone else who does dangerous sports on their weekends.

Not that I'm against the sports, Just against paying for everyone elses free healthcare.

berg, Dec 18, 2:36pm
Only competition with engines involved is a "sport". Anything else is only a game

Still waiting for my "no claims bonus" from the ACC.

(Yeah, not about to happen. I know.)

I honestly believe that third party insurance for property and medical should be compulsory. That would immediately disqualify half the wallies on the road.

bellky, Dec 18, 3:06pm
They'd still be on the road though, and you've only got third party. good luck in court. ;)

You'd have to have full insurance to cover yourself I guess. Then the insurance company can chase them. Won't be good for premiums but.

mark.52, Dec 18, 3:21pm
No, I have full insurance.
What I'm thinking is a system similar to those overseas. 3rd party (minimum) insurance, as part of the drivers license.
In effect, without it, your license is invalid.

dr.doolittle, Dec 18, 3:24pm
How many of you would like to pay your premiums to an Australian based insurance company! Do you honestly think that company wouldn't be interested in making a profit! (which will go off-shore)
Premiums would skyrocket after a 'honeymoon' period if ACC were privatized again & any long term weekly beneficiaries would be 'flicked over' to a sickness benefit asap with the insurer doing their best to squirm out of any ongoing responsibility, (in the name of profit) & the NZ tax-payer left to pick-up the tab.
ACC is a world leader that just needs a little tweaking.

dr.doolittle, Dec 18, 3:25pm
That doesn't stop unlicensed drivers from driving does it!

mark.52, Dec 18, 3:33pm
No, it doesn't. No more so than the current law prevents them from driving now.

mark.52, Dec 18, 3:36pm
I don't entirely disagree.
I think the current ACC levy should be incorporated into the driving license, rather than vehicle registration, and the rate charged dependent on accident history (among other things.)

So you'd be rewarded for not having crashes via a lower ACC levy. And the wallies having lots of crashes would find the cost of the levy, in many cases, unaffordable.

dr.doolittle, Dec 18, 5:42pm
sr2, I was referring to ACC premiums. The topic of this thread.

hfc2, Dec 18, 5:50pm
As a business employing 13 people i pay 49000 in acc levies plus another 4500 in share holder levies plus we run 4 hiluxs, total around 55100 per year. Great eh.

sr2, Dec 18, 5:54pm
I think those of us who have private medical insurance should be able to claim back a percentage of our ACC levies.

aragorn2003, Dec 18, 6:01pm
I agree

jenny188, Dec 18, 6:25pm
sadly premiums are worked on "law of averages". Average diesel van is a commercial and does a lot of shot high risk trips. So its user pays. Right or wrong , that what it costs You or me. Totally agree with you . I have 2 cars and spend more time most days walking around town rather than driving. Have most things insured and get creamed on them all. You'll start me on banks and profiteering next.

jhw2, Dec 18, 6:29pm
Rubbish - The premium already reflects the fact that the private medical policy tops up ACC, not the other way around

sr2, Dec 18, 6:48pm
I'm happy to proven wrong on that one, (great to see an interesting debate on this MB rather than the ususal inane mud slinging) but I'd check my source if I were you.
