suspended driver. A family loses their mother and grandmother on Xmas day. Take their licence away, no difference - they still drive!

So what's the answer.

angelah1, Dec 25, 7:20pm
take the car

bashfulbro, Dec 25, 7:22pm
The usual.she will go to court, some judge will suspend her licence for another six months or so.

r.g.nixon, Dec 25, 7:23pm
20 years jail. No parole.

quickstitch, Dec 25, 7:30pm
read in the Sunday star a few weeks ago that the worst drink=driver is a grandfather from South Auckland, 25 charges. I think the judges who saw his for his 10th time onwards should lose their jobs.

carstauranga001, Dec 25, 7:31pm
Ten years ago in Melbourne there were huge signs across the motorways. Couldn't miss them. They said.

DRINK - DRIVE - KILL - JAIL

Simple really. OK, before anyone says it, there has been no mention of drink yet but isn't it manslaughter!

carstauranga001, Dec 25, 7:32pm
They get another.

quickstitch, Dec 25, 7:32pm
yeah, should be a mimium 5 years jail, and if drink was involved then 10 years.

carmad50, Dec 25, 7:34pm
5 years jail ist time caught manitory no excuses2nd time 10 years and up 5 years every time behind the wheel , as for justice breaking their legs maybe.

dr.doolittle, Dec 25, 7:39pm
Somebody knew she was a suspended driver.
Somebody may have loaned them a car.
Perhaps "Somebody" needs to be held accountable.
See where I'm going with this!

marblicious, Dec 25, 7:42pm
No mention of who was at fault either or does the fleeing driver wear it because they were suspended!

carstauranga001, Dec 25, 7:47pm
True, but why flee if you are in the right. Driving while suspended is a relatively minor charge if that's all she was quilty of. I think there will be more serious charges laid.

socram, Dec 25, 7:49pm
Of course. If the suspended driver wasn't on the road, the accident wouldn't have happened.I can't understand why more isn't done earlier with repeat offenders.

marblicious, Dec 25, 8:00pm
So if you are in an accident and your vehicle doesn't up to wof standard, no registration or rucs paid you are automatically at fault regardless of the situation!

socram, Dec 25, 8:19pm
I get where you are coming from but your examples are technical offences, the other is a legal one.Splitting hairs maybe. Those with a healthy respect for the law can easily overlook RUC or a lapsed rego (within reason - and we have all been guilty of that), but when the court has already said you shouldn't be on the road at all, it is a blatant disregard of the legal system to carry on driving.

Our eldest grandson went to sit his final driving test test a couple of weeks ago, but a technical oversight on his part meant that they cancelled the test.
He was naturally distraught and it also meant he wasn't able to bring his younger brother up for Christmas even though his new test date is now Dec 28th.He has abided by that, even though it meant another car and another adult having to make the journey down to collect junior - all for the sake of three days.Tough, but we all know the rules and that is all there is to it.

marblicious, Dec 25, 8:46pm
To me there is no difference. Half the problem is that there are people that think it's O.K to flout some of our laws and then want to come down like a ton of bricks on people that break other ones. You have highligted this.

icemans1, Dec 25, 9:29pm
we went through that intersection sometime after it had happened, didn't see the cars but saw the cops etc.

murray55, Dec 25, 9:58pm
Of course, how silly of us, to actually blame someone for their own actions !

n1smo_gtir, Dec 25, 10:20pm
This sad situation is no difference from someone with no gun licence obtaining a gun n randomly gunning someone down. Manslaughter n should be jailed and key thrown into the ocean so tax payers don't have to bear maintenance cost.

lugee, Dec 25, 10:34pm
Problem with jail is that it's not scalable. Send more people there, taxpayer pays more for it.

Solution: Capital punishment; lethal injection, firing squad, etc etc.

neville48, Dec 25, 11:00pm
They are repeat offenders so either they do not realize consequences or do not recognise consequences, therefore they have a mental problem so put them into mental institutions for treatment and rid them of the status they get from f'wits that revel in this behavoir. They have a mental problem so treat them as such.

daryl14, Dec 25, 11:00pm
Or, our prison system contracted out to third world countries. Cheaper for tax payers, shit conditions for crims so less likely to reoffend, third world county makes some money.

carmad50, Dec 25, 11:54pm
does jailing them work capitol punishment I m all in favour for hanging a long long list of offenders from rapists to bank robbers and white collar rip off merchants to the drink driver and serious druggo kiddy fiddlers and kiddy killers murderers these are the crimes that we have excusitus for . well overdue for no more excusitus from the crims the alkys, the druggos the ones at the top crooked cops included hang them watch the crime rate come down heaps we got children in paraemo wtf seriously a defunct society we ve allowed ourselves to evolve into .this election stand up n be counted aye items like crime policticans salaries and perks ,unemployment, the atack on the beneficiaries , these perks of driving or being driven /flown around the golf course at tax payers expense while the average bloke worker has to tighten their belts wtf are we paying these wonker polictians for really should be hanging a few of em cas 90 % have no morales at all yerp my moan for my life is this in new zealand land of the long white raincloud used to be the land of milk n honeynow we just the land with splat all dosh lots of feigners argueing over the sale of our land s enough long time ago we need a new party people really can trust and aint none of them in parliment to do that

And many posters here wonder why police get frustrated and angry when they do their best to get people like this off the roads only to have a weak court repeatedly use a wet bus ticket when they transgress again.
The problem with repeat drink drivers, unlicenced drivers, suspended/disqualified drivers etc in NZ is they have worked out their is fek all consequences for their actions when held to task. Many have their fines drip paid by (yep you and fecking me) the tax payers so there's bugger all point in going down that route. I'm sure the government (current and previous) informed judges and JPs that jail is not an option as its too expensive to feed and house criminals in this time of namby pamby PC bollocks so where do we go! What's the answer! Goes off to bash head against wall *$&$%#$

the-lada-dude, Dec 26, 5:51am
