I agree with you. I think today you are better off with an auto. We have traded hundreds of old high mileage cars and had few problems with autos, but many worn slipping cluthces in manuals. Most normal old cars you can get a second hand auto very cheaply, but a manual box will be harder to find.

chebry, Dec 28, 7:55am
Toyota spent a lot of money fixing a problem it didnt have. Thanks to the formulas used during design no production car will drive against its brakes when fully applied

chebry, Dec 28, 8:01am
There was no unintended acceleration problem it came down to driver stupidity. It was only a US issue and it was impossible to reproduce in tests so a solution was retrofitted to save ignorant mericans from themselves again.

00quattro00, Dec 28, 10:17am
This unintended acceleration has happened befor in the us, Probably the govt trying to decrase toyota sales

trade4us2, Dec 28, 3:05pm
There were several suppliers of Toyota accelerators.I believe the Japanese-made accelerators were OK. US made ones were not.

http://www.insideline.com/toyota/fbi-raids-three-toyota-suppliers.html

"Denso supplies accelerator pedals for several Toyota vehicles. Toyota also uses pedals from supplier CTS. CTS pedal-equipped Toyotas are subject to the current unintended-acceleration recall, Denso pedal cars are not subject to the recall."

Toyota just does the bare minimum in terms of design, research and development. Its all "smoke and mirrors" as opposed to substance. They are so far behind the game now its laughable, the only thing more hilarious is the people who still fall over themselves to buy their over priced rubbish.

BTW, this is what happens when you design to make yourself look good in the current crash tests as opposed to designing a safe car for your customers.

Damn.Honda did pretty well though.

a.woodrow, Dec 28, 6:51pm
So what you are saying is that you only know what you've found on the internet! No offence but you don't have the whole story. Toyota settled to protect its image, it was good PR. Certain types of pedals caused a higher risk of rubber mats and the like jamming the pedal down, a well known issue amongst many manufacturers. the reprogramming and recalls was to improve the braking feel, because people got a little hysterical at the time. Now they've introduced failsafes that cut engine power if the brake and accelerator are depressed at the same time, to protect muppets who don't know how to drive.

Yep Jazz, Toyota's are rubbish aye.
Unfortunately the world doesn't agree with you and no, millions upon millions of their happy customers are not all trolls.
Your like a broken record with your selective reasoning and it's all getting rather long in the tooth, with you disagreeing with the majority of mechanics on your one-man crusade to get us all to drive your Euros.
Give it up mate. Your making yourself look a bit silly.
And no, it's not because of people like me 'peddling Toyota trash", as people are far more clever than that, especially when you look at the numbers.
I personally would rather walk than drive a Fiat. Horribly, ugly little cars that are, quite frankly, embarrassing.

thejazzpianoma, Dec 28, 7:15pm
I couldn't have illustrated the intellect of the average Toyota driver better myself. Your ability to operate the messageboard speaks volumes.

tgray, Dec 28, 7:20pm
Ok, whatever.

cassina1, Dec 28, 7:27pm
If his claims are so false how come the D&L guide has lasted more than 1 edition

franc123, Dec 29, 8:57am
Where did I say he makes false claims in the publication! Read the post again properly, I was referring to his self image and not what gets stated in the book. There is a degree of truth in the reviews, particularly with some of the faults that different vehicles develop, but exaggeration and personal bias smothers it somewhat.

chebry, Dec 29, 9:06am
last time it was Audi in the shit for poor design and it was poor design of the braking system and pedal placement that fooled the yanks, yet some on here laud VW as being great

franc123, Dec 29, 9:18am
^Yes Audi sales in the USA were crap for years after that, it was bad news all round. It did seem kind of coincidental that Toyota suddenly had all these issues when Obama and co were trying to refloat GM off the financial reef they were stuck on.

xpfairmont, Dec 29, 9:45am
.until their adds come on.
But I prefer it over radio live (which I would never listen to)

trouser, Dec 29, 9:50am
The main problem is stupid people don't apply enough pressure to the brake pedal.

My 32 year old mk2 cortinas brakes were more than strong enough to haul to a stop a 80hp crossflow whos throttle stuck on at 6k in second gear.

gutterbug1, Dec 30, 5:46am
He recommended I look at a Hiace van when I asked for info on the Mercedes Sprinter I think in all cases his reports suck

chebry, Dec 30, 7:03am
Thats the same theoretical formula still used today and a turbo Falcon with all its power will not drive against its brakes either. Most of Toyotas woes in this instant were blown out of all proportions by stupid US media and pressure from failed US car makers like Chrysler GM & Ford

chebry, Dec 30, 7:05am
Standard response from that clown buy a Toyota from a whiteshoe

bmwnz, Dec 30, 7:21am
LOL @ whiteshoe.
I haven't heard that one before. I like it.

grangies, Dec 30, 7:38am
Pity about the Volkswagen.

Sounds like our politicians.
