The linch pins I have seen have a gap between the pin and the spring when it's closed on one side. I want no gap on either side!

Tractor shops have them, or outdoor equipment.

Any tractor dealership rural garage or agricultural supply store such as CRT or RD1 stocks them

The ring has been put on the pin the wrong way round. Put the pin in a vice and pull the ring off. Turn it round 180 degrees and put it back on.

That's a really bad one Trader, they aren't normally that bad, not new ones.
And. I think that linch pins is a bit of an old fashioned expression. I wouldn't be surprised if you got more help at the shops if you ask if they have clevis pins. I know the difference, but I think that a lot don't.

Yeah, or tweak it.

Well I never heard of them until a few days ago. That one is brand new and had a label on it saying it was a linch pin. All the others are the same. I know that it should be put on the other way around, but in the dark and when wearing leather gauntlet gloves, it needs to be easy to put on. I'd rather have an R clip, but the ones I have seen are far too strong to put on by hand or too piddly and thin.

pop the wordslinch pin In that search bar up above.

Maybe I could take the pin off and throw it away, and make a new pin that is at right angles to the spring.

Of course I've done that. I wouln't mind a long drive to some farmer's supplier in the country if I was sure they had what I am asking for. But I bet they won't have it, so I'll have to make something, as usual.

I think you missed what i was getting at. Remove the ring completely off the pin, turn it round and put it back on again so it closes properly with no gap. It has simply been assembled wrong.

mmkay well then
The difference between Heavy Duty and made in chinkawalla. Is quite CLEAR to you now if you actually went in to the auctions the search provides.

OK I just tried that. There is no difference except that the gap is now on the other side.
To recap, I want a pin up to 6mm in diameter that can go in a hole and not fall out. It does not have to be heavy duty - it's just to stop a ring sliding off the end of a handle. It must be easy to put on without tools and while wearing thick leather gloves.

Not sure what they are called, they are usually keyring type things, that has a threaded thing you spin back, then its a push spring loaded clip (o:

What you need to do is rotate the ring over the top to close on other side, as they are only designed to close on one side

as someone has said couldnt you use a clevis pin and retainer ! or maybe a snapper pin is more what you could be after have seen those at tractor places ect

Karabiners! No, they are too hard to clip on according to the person using it with leather gloves on.

ripco, supacheepetc etc
trade4us2,
Jan 20, 3:47pm
Yes they would work but slow to put on. Really I want something that can be clipped in using one hand wearing a big thick leather glove.

What you have is about as good as you will get. Just getsome good quality ones.

Thankyou, I think I have bought a couple of things from them already. I'll go there and check out their linch pins. Otherwise I could drill a new hole in the right place in the linch pin that I have.

no need to drill a new hole
just bend the ring so it's off-centre. the vice and hammer method

Replies 18 & 19 are right, looking at the photo the spring is on the wrong side. If you look closely at the picture in the Wikipedia link you'll see how it should be. No dismantling required, just flip the spring right over the pin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linchpin
