Am looking at getting a 1985 vanette for $1300 tommorow, is this too much! its only 148XXX kms and tidy so thats whats attracted me too it, I cant find anything similar to compare it too though, seems like there's not many around

If its got a WOF and Rego, you can't go wrong.
Not to many around now, but were a great little van. I have had 2 in the past.

danjaro, Jan 17, 9:21pm
Thanks for the reply , yep reg and wof. How did you find it on the open road! This is a 4 speed column shift

leonard57, Jan 17, 9:29pm
as 2 was sayn

jmma, Jan 17, 9:31pm
They are not a power house, but it will get you from A to B. They drive OK, just remember its age. Good luck.

look for rust around side windows

danjaro, Jan 17, 9:40pm
All rust has been removed

nufix72, Jan 18, 1:37am
It will be rare bcause of rust issues. That does not however make it desirable, collectable or even good to drive.

And at 100kph it will be screaming its nuts off, shame there wasnt a 5spd version

r15, Jan 18, 5:24am
pretty bad at 100k, pretty uncomfortable all the time, pretty small, and when loaded up pretty thirsty too

round town though, with not much in it, -sure why not

chebry, Jan 18, 6:42am
Those were rubbish thats why theres none left dont waste yer coin

jmma, Jan 18, 7:15am
Sounds like everyone has got their period today (o:
We are talking a 1985 van here for $1300, how can OP go wrong and what else can he get for that money that will be as good and reliable as this one.

danjaro, Jan 18, 7:46am
I'm not liking these reviews too much . bit sceptical about buying now

jmma, Jan 18, 7:53am
Go take it for a drive, see what you think. Then come back with any questions.
First question from me, what are you going to use it for!

curlcrown, Jan 18, 7:58am
Any van that goes and has a wof is worth more than $1300.00.

chebry, Jan 18, 8:16am
Nar not some of em and the OP asked if it was rare it is because it was junk new, A mate of mine in Canberra bought one new and it wore .out in under 12 months carting his tools. If the vendor has inflated the price based on its rarity its worth knowing just how bad that thing was if your really lucky it might have a 120y powertrain, Oh joy

jmma, Jan 18, 9:55am
Talk sense man, how cana price of $1300 for a van with wof and rego be inflated.
Its worth about that in scrap (o:

mugenb20b, Jan 18, 10:34am
Don't be. If it has no rust it will be well worth the money. Engines are dead easy to work on, clutch can be replaced in 2 hours (and that's on the ground with a jack), tyres are cheap, and fully loaded, they'll use around 10L / 100km. I had one for a couple of years and found it OK for the type of work I did.

Are they junk! The Vanette is a light van, simpler and not as robust as a Hiace, but if it blows a head gasket, it won't cost $3k and 3 days to fix.

chebry, Jan 18, 12:05pm
Scrap cars @90 per tonne so no its not worth more as scrap if it has a wof n reg and you can endure driving it buy it I donr care its yours not mine I wouldnt have it for free.

gunna-1, Jan 18, 1:44pm
A stage two camshaft and a set of extractors works well for better open road speed on older cars, if your willing to spend the money or if your able to install it yourself.

solarboy, Jan 18, 10:46pm
I thought there was a 1500cc one with a 5 speed - but may be wrong !I guess the one poster 1 is considering is a 1200cc as it's a 4 speed.

gammelvind, Jan 19, 6:06am
Van, rust free, reg and wof, only $1300. It's a 1986 van, don't expect to much, go for it.

skin1235, Jan 19, 9:13am
big problem with all vans of that age now is the radiator, either get it recored ( $300) or stripped and the cores rodded ( about the same price ) if the fins are still attached
had a 2ltr C20 5 spd, pulled caravans Wanganui to Hawkes bay for fruit picking several trips, not quick with 18ft vans behind them but they are reliable

franc123, Jan 19, 9:38am
Yes I think you're right, the A15 motor was used in the later ones with a 5 speed. the C20 was made for many years maybe up until about 1989 or so, it was long after they stopped making the RWD Sunnys.I remember the bloke who ran the local dairy bought one new and I'm sure the rego was O something which would be 1989.If I was offered one for that money with a new WOF and it wasn't rusted I'd go for it, theres nothing wrong with them as an urban runabout, and they're a hell of a lot cheaper to fix than whats being made today, not that theres much to go wrong!

I know a plumber who had one which I suspect must've been the 1500 as it did him well with plenty of gear in it and a good sized tandem trailer often in tow. Yep, a good sound workhorse !
