Reversing Out Of Driveways:

Well, hello there everyone, here I am again in my attempt to convince people that it is not OK to reverse out of your driveways. My last attempt at this did not meet with a very good response. Look at how many children have been killed or seriously injured by reversing over them. Reverse in and come out forward! Maybe even look in front of the car before you get the car in motion. This would save the lives of a few innocent children. I am in no way placing any blame on anyone who has run their children over in such a situation. They have my sympathy.

wrong2, Jan 26, 7:15am
accidents happen mainly because of no brains, or no eyes

direction is irrelevant

biddy6, Jan 26, 7:15am
What about running kids over when you are reversing into the drive, surly just as much chance.

thomas75, Jan 26, 7:21am
That is true, biddy6, but one would assume that one would look into the drive as they approach. However, as wrong2 sed, no brains or eyes. It is still the obvious thing to do, and I am sure it would save the lives of children.

lookoutas, Jan 26, 7:48am
You didn't like the last response, so you must like punishment.
I also agree with wrong2 & biddy6

thomas75, Jan 26, 7:57am
That is right, lookoutas I didn't like the last response, but I am not looking for punishment! What does it take to convince people of this! How many more children will be maimed or killed! I am on the side of the children, not the adults who can't be convinced of this. I am a driving instructor of some years, so shouldn't I know!

I'm not knocking your experience, oryour passion on the matter, but it is somewhat flawed.
It is all very well driving out of your driveway forwards, whilch will defineately reduce the risk to children behind the car, but remember that in order to drive out of a driveway forwards, you had to reverse into a driveway, which is just as, if not more dangerous than reversing out, as you have to stop in the middle of ther oad, and hold up traffic while yuo reverse in.
This extra complication will draw your attention away from what is happening on the sidewalk and in your driveway.

ianalice1, Jan 26, 8:17am
I agree, big killer of our babies and grandbabies.
I have a Honda Odyssey and would dearly love to buy a reversing camera, but just can't afford it, so I just ask my beloved wife to hop out and check behind.

and why does that make you think you know!
imagine reversing in off a busy street and the danger that would cause

outbidyou2, Jan 26, 8:30am
Voted "dumbest thread" of 2013 so far.

wasser61, Jan 26, 8:52am
So someone with a problem on facebook is not as dumb as someone trying to come up with a way that might save a life!

At least they are trying to put it out there that there may be a better way that will reduce the number of kids that are run over driveways. Have you got any better ideas or are you here just to make stupid comments!

And funny how at all the places that I work, reverse parking is the norm, and the sole reason is to prevent you from backing out and into people.

austingtir, Jan 26, 8:56am
This thread is deff a front runner for now.Totally crazy thinking from OP.

aragorn2003, Jan 26, 9:08am
Looks guys , everyone need to put roundabouts at the bottom of their driveways so you can drive in forward and go around the roundabout and come out forward . jeeez don't you people think

whqqsh, Jan 26, 9:08am
I would have thought looking down the driveway as you walked towards your car to get in & then reverse OUT of the drive would give a better view than driving past then reversing IN.

NZTools, Jan 26, 9:15am
There is a big difference between reverse parking in corner into aprivate work carpark, and reversing from a street around a potentialy blind corner into a driveway that could have kids playing in it.

gman35, Jan 26, 10:13am
One thing that may cause many of the accidents is that the people "leaving" in reverse could be in more of a rush to get somewhere by a certain time and so may be reversing quicker and/or not take quite as much care as when "arriving". So the point has some merit , but certainly more of a hassle on a busy road, and some drivers would simply be incapable of doing it safely (for other traffic) from mid-road.

I did road inspections for some years, and the closest I came to accidents was not on busy roads, it was in quiet little cul de sacs, where on a number of occasions I almost collided with drivers coming backwards at speed out of their driveways, without even looking. Often in such situations there are fences or hedges obstructing the view of the driver until the rear of the car is on the roadway. Kids on foot or on bikes on the footpath are very much at risk in such situations.

Yes, but, cost US $18.50, with free shipping to NZ and it has to be plugged into something else.

i hit a kid in my work van going forward up a driveway!
saw 2 kids playing up by the house as i came up a long drive bushes on both sides
as i was stopping i saw something out of the corner of my eye it was there and then it was gone at first i thought it was a birdbut wrong colour then i thought of a cat but too high with a sense of dread i opened the door and looked and there was about a 3yr old sitting on the driveway
he was ok it was a glancing blow
i yelled out to the owners of the house and he came over and checked him out it was the neighbours kid and he had a habit of just crashing through the hedge into their drive he must have came through head down and stood up just as i hit him
freaked me out so muchi went homefor the rest of the day

I suspect that the majority of driveway deaths are people running over their own kids in their own driveways, that points to a very careless driver not knowing or looking where their own kids are. If they are that careless backing out they aren't going to be any better backing in. Our kids are all grown up now but I always made a point of knowing where they all were before getting into the car and then eyes peeled all the way out of the drive.

gunhand, Jan 26, 3:56pm
I suspect that you would be correct. Most of heard of seems to be family members backing ovver toddlers.I live down a long driveway but it has fences so can see clearly down it. However going out it is different as to my right at the footpath is a large power box that impeeds my view of road and footpath so I have to stop before the path then crawl out to road. I leave at same time evey day and 99% of time its clear.however it is surprising who is on the footpath when you least suspect it.
I think people just get complacent and forget to check there egress.
OH, and if I reveresed out my driveway I would have to get out of car to check both ways before proceeding.

naphtha, Jan 26, 7:57pm
Just park on the road like most folk do.
