Is this a standard fee?

I've looked at updating my car. I'm going to get a new one on HP and sell my existing car privately as I've been offered more privately than the car yard will offer for a trade. I have finance organised so no drama on their part. When I told them on the phone that I have finance sorted they said "Oh, we have a $150 document fee that applies to all vehicle sales includes guaranteed clear title, change of ownerships, associated sales & purchase paperwork".

Is this reasonable! I thought they had to guarantee clear title anyway, and change of ownership is only $9, according to the NZTA website.

well find a other place to buy a car from. easy i personally would not hire purchase any car unless its new and i could deduct it from the taxes.

firemansgirl, Jan 28, 5:22pm
Well technically it's not HP as such. it is a bank loan, unsecured. Once I sell my current car the lump sum is going back onto the loan. Thanks for the comment but the question wasn't whether YOU would get a vehicle on HP it's whether it is reasonable and/or a standard charge.

carstauranga001, Jan 28, 5:22pm
A $150 doc fee on all purchases is bollocks!

skull, Jan 28, 5:55pm
+1 I'd move to another car yard if I were you they sound a bit dodgy to me.

intrade, Jan 28, 6:23pm
thats exactly what i said find a better place to buy from. I would never in hell pay any fees to no dealer . and i would also nevr pay the price they have written on there signs.

gunhand, Jan 28, 6:27pm
You don't have to justify your loan to anyone. Its your money spend it how you see fit.

rpvr, Jan 28, 6:45pm
Just tell them you won't pay the fee, do they want the deal to proceed or not! You may well find the fee miraculously disappears.

kazbanz, Jan 28, 7:11pm
What apsolute total rubbish.
There is NEVER a fee for that stuff.
NEVER EVER EVER

They aren't possibly a bit miffed at you for applying for finance with them then going and getting your own finance are they!
Annoying as that can be for the guy thats spent time processing your applicationthere can never be a fee charged for doing it.
I would run away really fast if this is an indication of their business practices

You are making it easy for the car yard as now they don't have to worry about trying to onsell your tradein.Since you have your finance you are now a csh buyer as far as buying your new car.

If it were me I'd be trying to get the car much cheaper than the window price.Unless its a real odd ball car there is zillions for sale to pick and choose from.Let your money do the talking. If a dealer starts talking about paperwork fees just walk away - they are trying to shaft you so the deal is probably rubbish as well.

meathead_timaru, Jan 28, 11:36pm
That's entirely up to you to decide. I guess they figure if you're silly enough to by a depreciating asset with a loan you're silly enough to pay a $150 document fee. It's certainly not illegal.

Avoid + 1

kimbo88, Jan 29, 6:21am
Yes, tell them to jam it.As you correctly point out, the change of ownership fee is $9.00 only, and they are obliged as a dealer to guarantee clear title. It's a requirement of their licence. So another $141 for paperwork that they have to complete as part of a sale anyway!Tell them where to put it and go shopping elsewhere, they don't deserve your business.

pico42, Jan 29, 1:13pm
Unless I was arranging through the car yard itself, I wouldn't tell them my financial arrangements for buying a vehicle. Unless it involves them, why do they need to know! I would also expect any paperwork to be completed to be part of the purchase price, not an add-on.

turners!

kcc55a, Jan 29, 7:00pm
I have seen such admin or document fees charged and worse, up to $450.00, however I have to say its usually the finance company making the charges not the dealer

kdcentralni, Jan 29, 7:20pm
Who's the dealer!

neville48, Jan 29, 7:54pm
Listen to all the toffs from golden towers that comment about not financing a used car, nice to be able to pay cash, hope they choke on their silver spoons.

leelee74, Jan 29, 7:57pm
No thats not the go i was car dealer for 15 years no charge for cash buyer sounds dodgy as unless the car has no plates and is a jap import but if itsNZ registered and you are giving them a cheque for the vehicle i would go some where else

kazbanz, Jan 29, 8:02pm
Hang on a mo--read the OP. This isn't the normal "admin fee" for a loan which the bank would have charged her. NOPE this is a fee for-well basicly nothing. The op is in essence a cash buyer.
(noit atacking you-annoyed at that kinda underhanded dealing

kazbanz, Jan 29, 8:05pm
Um matey-only two posts from people saying they wouldn't finance and both prefer to own older cars.

firemansgirl, Jan 29, 9:22pm
I never applied for finance with them, I rang and asked about a vehicle. Then the guy spouted about the fee.having finance sorted should have meant (to them) that money was organised regardless of where from.

firemansgirl, Jan 29, 9:26pm
It's Manukau Park & Sell in Auckland.

skin1235, Jan 29, 10:19pm
are they actually dealers, thought they merely rented parking space to vehicle owners wanting to sell their vehicle
and the current owner is supposed to pay that rental for the space, not the new owner

mig5, Jan 30, 8:20am
Ahhh, Park & Sell, turn and run, run now.
