Hawks and Falcons are typically misidentified as each other but are quite different.

I don't think the Harrier Hawk is in any danger of disappearing, the Falcon on the other hand is a much rarer bird.

Crowd was paying good $ forpossumsany conditionfor the fur .I used to feed my dogs on possumgave themhealthy coat& in thebush had possum stew. ,used the small ones.

Bitsy boffin is correct the hawk that you see at the road kill sight is an Aussie hawk, the native hawke only catches birds on the wing or live pray, dont know there individual names.

thejazzpianoma, Jan 16, 2:44pm
The Falcons numbers have now dipped below the critical mass where its pretty much impossible to avoid extinction.

I've done this too to a couple of cats - such a shame :(

desmodave, Jan 16, 3:49pm
Dog shouldn't have been on the road. End of story. What's that got to do with a legal point of view !Im not having a go at you anyway so feel free to voice your opinion . I reckon those with an expensive or tidy car would be more likely to try avoid anything damaging their pride and joy. I was behind a car yesterday heading through the hills on my way down to Westport when it did a big swerve to the right, i was expecting a slip a rock or a tree or something but no just a pukeko . The pukeko lived but if there was anything heading the other way it would have been a head on crash.

firemansgirl, Jan 16, 4:32pm
I do this too. Unfortunately in South Auckland there are an element of d*******s driving around who seem to think that a cat on the road is some sort of target. I stopped one afternoon to move a cat that was ( presumably dead) in the middle of the road. Before I could get to it, a carload of above mentioned d*******s veered across and ran straight over it, screaming obscenities at me. Karma is a good thing, I think.

OMFG. Firstly, are you a crack head! Not having a go, just want to know what I'm dealing with here.

Gunhand hit a dog in an ambulance and felt bad and asked what do you do! I was trying to reassure him that he has no legal and next to no moral obligation to stop esp if carrying a Priority 1 patient. The dog shouldn't have been on the road. END OF STORY.

OF COURSE no one hits animals on purpose, The animal never expects the car and the driver never expects the animal to be there. But if drivers distracted or poor visability or animal runs onto road accidents happen.

Not having a go! Then whats with the girlfriend/boyfriend quip! Get under your skin a bit, did I! Ha Ha.

elect70, Jan 17, 10:50am
I hit apower pole onceavoiding a dog on the road, cop saysyeah right, run it over .

taurus61, Jan 17, 11:03am
I dont know about priorty calls or amblance protcols, but i allways understood that if you hit an animal that you have a legal obligation to stop and ascertain its condition and contact the owner or authorities. I would have thought the ambulance driver could have contacted there control to advise police and let them handle it while they continued to there call.
If I was sick or injured I would like to think the emergacy services would get to me as quickly as possible but not put others at risk. A dog could just as easily been a cyclists or walker or someone pulling out of a driveway just around that corner. The last thing many of these people expect to encounter on a quite road is the emergancy services.

pauldw, Jan 17, 11:31am
That also applies to encountering someone scraping up road kill.

desmodave, Jan 17, 1:48pm
Bit sensitiveaye. Crack head nah not me, like what do i have to stay awake for. So you fancy yourself as lawyer do ya. Must be a stressful occupation.

desmodave, Jan 17, 2:07pm
1 possum
1 onion
1 clove garlic
clarified butter
olive oil (enough to brown meat without becoming dry)
1 cup dry red wine
flat or field mushroom, sliced (big meaty ones)
2 tablespoons fresh herbs (a mix of rosemary, thyme, marjoram, dill and parsley)
1 tablespoon tomato puree
1 cup dark beer, eg black mac, monteiths
1 cup brown possum stock
1 tablespoon marsala
Directions:

1
Skin and bone the possum (use only the best meat for the casserole, ie: the strip loins and hind quarters, cubed).
2
Reserve the carcass and trimmings for stock.
3
In a heavy pan, heat the clarified butter and oil.
4
Sauté onion and garlic.
5
When onion is clear, remove to casserole.
6
Dust the cubed possum with flour and brown in batches.
7
Add to casserole.
8
Melt a little more clarified butter and sauté bacon and mushrooms.
9
Remove to casserole De-glaze pan as necessary with red wine- add this to casserole together with herbs, ground pepper, tomato purée, beer and marsala.
10
Stir, cover and cook in slow oven for 2-3 hours, adding more possum stock if necessary.
This simple recipe could be used for other road kill also.
Remember people 1080 kills

gunhand, Jan 17, 4:36pm
This was probably 50kms from any cop or town and at 2am or so. Sure calling coms is an option but you must realise that the coms center handles all of the South Islands ambulances so asking them for help isn't really what you do if you don't have to. Especially being a dog. Human etc well yea.
The problem was the bloody thing was still alive. If it was dead well we would have carried on as theres squat you can do. We looked around for a farm house close to the road, even knocked on a door. got no responce so again what do you do. This took only a few minutes of time. What I decided to do was put it out of its misery, much to the horror of my female partner. Its not like help is handy. So I walked back to do the deed and the bloody thing was no longer on the road. I guess it crawled off and died.It got hit by a large Ambulance at over 100kph so God knows how it lived anyway.
And yes as I uunderstand you are obligated to stop if you injure an animal and try and help.
And it was a patient waitng for us not onboard. They don't teach things like this at Ambo school LOL.
I did make note of it etc etc but again, What the hell do you do when find yourself in that situation. What would a cop do if same thing happened.prob get out shoot it and carry on! What would a fire truck do! and so on.
I don't like hitting aniamls but I don't swerve either if its at speed. Ill certainly slow down if possable.

desmodave, Jan 17, 5:01pm
You do just what you did. You do the best you can at the time.

richynuts, Jan 17, 5:34pm
Correct.mate of mine swerved to miss a dog late at night on the way to methven, unfortunately he hit a conrete letter box as he could not correct his isuzu bighorn, he woke up in hospital, the cops arrived shortly afterwards and were going to charge him with careless use of a motor vehcile if they could not find the dog or owner.luckily the local farmer near the crash site admitted his dog was off its leash. Cops told my mate "don't ever swerve for a dog." and that was it, Never heard if farmer was charged with anything.

so what do you reckon falcons eat!(hint, its not KFC)

gunhand, Jan 17, 5:47pm
Mostly Commodores!

pestri, Jan 18, 1:46pm
Yes as I understand it the Hawkes are Australian imports like the possum, and feed on road kill:

The native Falcon feeds on live animals so it wont be the guy you bowl on the road.

leonard57, Jan 18, 4:09pm
just because its on the road doesnt mean you have the right to bowl it over, unless of course its unsafe too otherwise,ie=it runs/appears very suddenly.the thing that I despise are the disrespectfull df who think its funny and think nothing more of it.only a cat/dog/duck etc

daryl14, Jan 18, 6:22pm
Correct, There are always some saddos around who think it's fun to hurt animals.

I wonder though, if as a professional driver, if you collide with anything including an animal, do you have to report it! Is it basically a workplace accident/incident!

whqqsh, Jan 18, 6:32pm
Hawks are mentioned in Maori mythology predating European occupation & are recognised as native to NZ. They usually get hit by cars due to a bad case of 'sticky foot'. They tend to instinctively or inadvertently grab the prey as they try to fly off & therefore dont get out of the way in time.

pestri, Jan 18, 7:08pm
Bit like thePukeho then,,an Aussie bird but somehow recognised asa native. funny how a bird can get a billing as native NZ but not the ol' Pakaha eh!
