do you stop and remove roadkill in order to try and savethe hawks from becoming roadkill too!.I often do as I appreciateseeing them in flight when travelling and their does'nt seem to be so many around

daryl14, Jan 15, 4:48pm
Sir, you're a scholar and a gentleman. That is all.

leonard57, Jan 15, 4:52pm
thought is was just a normal part of being human

fordkiwi27, Jan 15, 4:55pm
see heaps of hawks. im sure more than iused to.

daryl14, Jan 15, 4:56pm
I just can't imagine the average motorist stopping to remove road kill. Never seen it done.

People don't even stop to pick up dropped rubbish/items large enough to seriously damage a car.

Just swerve on round and drive right by with blinkers on their eyes but not on their cars.

You should post this in recipe's .Those Hawks are normally on to it. Hawks and Falcons look so dam cool just hanging in the sky in the right breeze

Heres one for ya. I was on a priorety 1 call and way in the back blocks at about 2am. Came over a brow and a dog ran out in front of us. Bowled it as swerving or panic stopping can cause more issue than its worth. Anyway stopped looked back and the dog was still alive.what do you do! Remember, theres a patient waiting as well.

gunhand, Jan 15, 6:09pm
Sadly many have that number etched in there minds. I think it still works all the same!

daryl14, Jan 15, 6:12pm
Dog shouldn't have been on the road. End of story.

trogedon, Jan 15, 6:13pm
My mother n law stops for roadkill.and takes it home for her (feral) cats.

gunhand, Jan 15, 6:15pm
Yes, it was a farm dog as well, no doubt some expensive sheep dog. Surprised us but when driving you never really know whats over the browe or round the corner. Mind you I dont think dogs take note of red flashing lights in the night.

saxman99, Jan 15, 6:19pm
What does "Priority One" mean!Stop and tend to a dog if you need to!

gunhand, Jan 15, 6:24pm
P1 is a urgent call to a sick person. Ambulance. This means you are able to travel up to 130kph if safe to do so.

ambo11, Jan 15, 6:35pm
I picked up a big cat this morning, that was dead on the road, and put it on the verge. Always do this, just in case the owner finds it and can bury it, plus its just the right thing to do if you are an animal lover. Better to grieve and bury it in one piece, than squashed to oblivion.

I love hawks and the way they glide upon the thermals. I'm ashamed to say that I've never once thought of stopping to remove roadkill off the road. Over here some govt. dept. goes around spray painting a mark onto roadkill then somebody else comes and collects them later on that day, usually wombats. This probably helps to save wedge tail eagles like you said with hawks, good on you.

I do it all the time, pickup the rabbits etc on the way to work and throw them out around the vineyard where I work.Hawks hang around the place and keep the birds moving ,especially as the grapes are ripening.

robbo36, Jan 15, 8:50pm
That's so funny Troggy. My FIL stops in his ute to check on the "freshness" of roadkill possums and if good will pluck them for the fur. One time he said while plucking a freshly bowled possum one night, it started to come "back to life", so he had to get his "possum dispatcher" aka axe handle to finish it off. lol

desmodave, Jan 15, 8:52pm
Girl friend ( or could be boy friend , i dont know ya from a bar of soap) young kidcat or dog , yeah lets just run them all over if they are in the way. Spose u could stop or drive around them if ya wanted. How often do you see something on the road that shouldn't be there .

serf407, Jan 15, 9:33pm
I think the Harrier Hawk population is an estimated 24 000 and falling!
So stop (if not too dangerous )and remove the squashed possum with your wheel nut lever or whatever as the Hawks grip the road killanda car vs Hawk isusually a broken wing etc which is usually a dead bird.

smac, Jan 16, 5:28am
I've also heard that the hawk population is falling. Damned if it looks like the case around here, just as many if not more. I also don't stop to move it, just give a quick blip on the horn and they're long gone before I get there.

daryl14, Jan 16, 6:33am
Desmo, You got me all wrong. I was commenting from a legal point of view and also the point of view that most NZ motorists would take. The blase, not my problem attitude that most seem to have.

I think it's wonderful that there are people who stop to pick up dead animals.

Incidentally, I hit a Mynah just the other day. Was quite a surprise. I Have never hit any animal before. They are usually avoidable.

paul861, Jan 16, 6:37am
run the hawks over, not the falcons . hawks are crippling the native bird population

bjmh, Jan 16, 6:46am
when i was a kid we trapped hawks ,governmentpaid a token of 2shillings and six pence for the feet.apparently they were a pest, ask a famer what he thinks of them when they peck the eyes out of a cast/live sheep.incidentally i think the cruelty to animals act requires you to render assistance to an animal you hit on the road.i.e possums.tui moment !

smac, Jan 16, 6:57am
Must have been a dumb/old/slow one.they're usually way too smart and fast to get hit.
