Cam belt job

Hi guys.
After some, um, helpful advise, please.
Just had a cambelt service on my 1999 Honda Odyssey.
Cambelt kit, waterpump and drive belts replaced.
When we got it back noticed how quite the motor was and was told that the waterpump was stuffed and making noises.
Anyhow, now, about 2 weeks later at about 1500 revs it makes a sort of wooing sound.
Don't think it hunted like, but took it back and they said was just the cambelt beding in and they adjusted the drive belts and put some sort of dressing on it.
It's not very loud like, just wondering like.
It does have a warranty if it does something untoward like.
Thanks,
Ian

Cambelts don't "bed in" but it might have just been poorly adjusted drivebelts causing the noise. Is the sound gone now!

ianalice1, Mar 12, 7:31pm
No, not really.
But we've hardly used the car, since it was done.

Sounds like the Cambelt might be adjusted too tight.

ianalice1, Mar 12, 7:47pm
It's a bit strange, to me, in that it starts about 1500 and stop just over the 2000 mark.
Does that make sense!

ianalice1, Mar 13, 8:12am
Oh, okay, so no more words of wisdom!

If cambelt is, to tight, what can one do about that and will it cause problems!

ianalice-I suspect the alternator,w pump power steer belt had stretched a bit and needed a tiny tweak.Ive noticed the coooler/moister mornings lately means I'm getting belt squeak more often

if belt is too tight they usually moan.can't think how to describe noise, but its usually there right from idle.A tight belt could cause damage,i would give it a bit of use, then if you're not happy take it back.talk nicely to your mechanic.its all an attitude test

ianalice1, Mar 13, 8:24am
Thank you.
Had drive belts check, Monday, so thought I'd give it a month and if still moaning I'd take it back then.
That sound okay!

As someone said, cambelts do not 'bed in'. The fact they're using a belt dressing on the accessory belts should be a warning - they should have done the job properly and checked the pulley alignment, cleaned the pulleys and correctly tensioned the belt.

IMHO that wooing sound is a belt harmonic. It may be that the cam belt is a fraction too tight or it may just be something that is normal on your particular engine.

bjmh, Mar 13, 9:49am
yer run it for a couple of good trips, see what its like then.

lyonruge, Mar 13, 10:44am
Go back to your original post, and see if it makes any sense to you, .

meathead_timaru, Mar 13, 10:45am
If the accessory belt is too tight, it's too tight. Running it will only shorten the life of all the bearings.

Get it checked now to save pain later.

Edit: Narks are everywhere

Better sort your grammar there mate, you never know who could be watching these days lol

beast9, Mar 13, 6:17pm
did they replace the idler and tensioner bearings as it could be a dry and stuffed bearing

ianalice1, Mar 13, 6:43pm
They said the put a "cambelt kit" in, waterpump, antifreeze, etc

beast9, Mar 13, 6:48pm
yes and "cambelt kit" means nothing as you can buy cambelt kits with just a belt and oil seals you can even buy just a belt it might pay if you check that it was a complete kit ie belt idler tensioner oil seals tension spring and because its a honda odyssey balance shaft belt and tensionerand that it was all lined up correctly as a out of time balance shaft can cause problems

beast9, Mar 13, 6:50pm
hell it could even be that they have'nt tightened something correctly and its chattering at that rpm like a loose bearing or harmonic balancer

ianalice1, Mar 14, 7:08am
I email them, last night, after reading this and they said to come in this morning.
I'll report back after

daryl14, Mar 14, 7:15am
They didn't replace water pump but they gave you a warranty!
When it fails you should Count yourself lucky.

ianalice1, Mar 14, 9:50am
Yes they did replace water pump. Told me they did everything required to be done. Not a cheap job, nearly $900.

Went back this morning. Explained to bosses wife, what you said, she's also a qualified mechanic. Boss has listen, next thing car on host and wheels off and big noises from car.
Comes back a while later and he took some cover off and he could see it wobbling like. The harmonic balancer, whatever that is. Fixed that. Said can hear a slight sound from cambelt, but said he keep checking that for us.
Real good workshop, from our experience.
Said if I'm concerned, just to let him know and he'll look into it.

So all in all, some really good advice, beast9.

Thank you so much.

Ian

So didnt tighten harmonic balancer ! Lucky not come off !

therafter1, Mar 14, 10:21am
Just as well you took it back. The harmonic balancer is the bottom pulley and has probably delaminated. It should have been checked while it was off. In saying that, if whoever did the job over tightened the belts that could have wrecked the harmonic balancer as well.

Its not unusual for harmonic balancers of that age and K's to fail.
