My god - I had my first proper read of D&L today - have scanned thru on occasion - but do they sh*t-can EVERY vehicle or what!

Except for Toyota it seems.

Yeah I know D&L has been talked about before - but before I thought that this MB was just taking the Mickey for no reason.

Having owned a few cars - I was appalled as to some of the "reviews". Altho I laughed when they pre-fix most things with "with proper servicing then this won't happen". Duh!

Wow. I thought it would be helpful/enjoyable/bit of a laugh maybe.

The MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electric Control) engine draws air smoothly into its cylinders in a way that minimises loss of energy.

And, while small, it packs a respectable punch, with maximum power of 58kW and maximum torque of 102Nm. Not bad.

The scary thing is that people will believe what is written in there. Its like believing any comments about cars from Jeremy Clarkson. People think both are car gurus, instead of writers/performers making a dollar by being 'entertaining'.

Clive M-W occupies a niche left by the mainstream motoring journalists that only seem to be interested in reviewing the latest luxury or sports model.

socram, Mar 1, 7:22am
On that basis, some niches are better left unfilled.

whqqsh, Mar 1, 7:50am
he slates just about everything & his worst 'reviews' seem to be on some of the best cars Ive owned.
Amazes me how he points out on some cars (but not others) that certain parts will need replacing or servicing at certain milage, yet these are wearable parts that need replacing on EVERY car.
The guy can double his number of sexual partners by changing hands

This publication would have worked 20 years ago when they were actually building bad cars, but trashing every car made except Toyota, is silly in 2013.
Of course, scaremongering is what sells copies.

saxman99, Mar 1, 8:07am
hahahahahaha!

franc123, Mar 1, 11:08am
Hmm sad but true, much of what gets written about in the papers by motoring journos is close to irrelevant to car buyers here, they'd rather write about some Porsche convertible that 4 examples will get sold, or some silly sports Range Rover with 22 inch wheels an rubber bands for tyres. They never dare to write about faults in common used cars, criticize manufacturers or their distributors about quality problems that shouldn't exist these days OR take on the JUC importers as to why they sell stuff thats not suitable for NZ.Asking the hard questions just causes TROUBLE.

haventrader, Mar 1, 12:14pm
I like the "Avoid like the plague" cars. I've had the most fun driving a few of those over the years, without any of the issues listed.

mm12345, Mar 1, 12:53pm
No - on that basis ALL niches are probably best unfilled.

Motoring journalists have almost universally been turned into little more than shills for the auto companies, dependent on "favours" from the industry. Some might think the journalists might have some kind of "watchdog" role.Long gone - they sold their souls decades ago.Without those "favours", they'd be left reporting "old news" that nobody wants to read.A bad career move in a tough business.

If CMW reports that every motor company churns out dogs and lemons, and that people often buy cars for the wrong reason - emotional rather than rational - then at least he has potential to be useful.

The D/L is a joke. I don't know of anyone in the trade who would ever refer to it, in fact I know nobody with any level of knowledge who would even bother using it. It's a biased, poorly researched heap

flockton55, Mar 2, 7:15am
I challenged Clive M-W on a number of assertions made about Jaguars which were old wives tales and urban myths. To his credit, he has made some changes in those listings, but I agree that he takes the most depressing, pessimistic view of car ownership. The best thing is to take the Dog & Lemon guide with a very large pinch of salt.

carkitter, Mar 2, 10:24pm
I like how the journos describe the new and latest model in glowing terms but 4yrs later when the next version comes along, suddenly the original was full of design flaws and glaring faults that have all been magically fixed, until the next model.

esprit, Mar 2, 10:47pm
It's horrendously full of errors too.

When reading about the Peugeot 306, its accompanied by a photo of a Peugeot 106 and lists a bunch of problems that Peugeot 306s aren't even known for, and doesn't list any of the problems they're known for. it's like having an article on the Toyota Corolla accompanied by a photo of a Toyota Starlet and having a list of issues commonly found on a 1981 Kenwood food mixer.

bmwnz, Mar 3, 5:02am
Hey! I bought our Kenwood mixer in 1974 and its still going perfectly. Must have done at least half a million revolutions. :)

howie69, Mar 3, 5:24am
If you had read the D&L report first you would have probably been put off by the number of faults

bmwnz, Mar 3, 5:25am
LOL. So true!

socram, Mar 3, 8:35am
Only half amillion! Jeez, someone isn't doing enough cooking.

gwr1, Mar 3, 9:00am
The D&L is completely accurate-for I have the proofin the garage,The 31 year old TOYOTA CORONA with 792,000 ks and still going strong. Now All U doubters -if the D & L ain,t true! where are all your shitty mitsi bmws hondas mazdas holdens falcons mercs etc!eh I cant see
them!OH thats right they,ve all been sold to china for scrape years ago because they were breaking down and costing too much $$ to fix.

TOYOTAS NUMBER 1

franc123, Mar 3, 9:13am
Funny I can't see 99.5% of Coronas that were built in the early eighties either, Toyota didn't build car bodies any better than anyone else in that period, in fact they were demonstratably worse in some areas.

ockey, Mar 3, 5:16pm
Well said gwr1, long live the old toyotas.

morrisman1, Mar 3, 5:18pm
I pity the person who spent 792000km in a Toyota corona

curlcrown, Mar 3, 5:47pm
Funnily enough the highest mileage car in the world is a Volvo, but generally Volvo are for from the most reliable.

pebbles61, Mar 3, 6:40pm
Toyota tax for life! weeeeeeeeeeeee!
