I fitted a triple air horn set from Repco to my Primera - boy, they're LOUD!Used them a few times on errant drivers not giving way etc.Usual response is to hit the hooks and stop dead in the middle of the road, and sit there red-faced and gobsmacked.Still sitting there as I disappeared down the road.Had a guy not give way when turning left (old rules) and had his driver's window down.I hit the air horns about 6 feet away from his car.He jumped so high he hit the roof of his car - a four-wheel drive - and promptly ran up the gutter, stopping on the footpath.he was still there as I disappeared as well,My bet is he actually shat himself.Best of all is these horns only cost about $80 or so, cheap and good.

It's all legal. There is no noise limit for a car horn. The only requirement is that the horn can be opperated from the drivers seat, it must be able to be heard from a distance of 100m and play a solid note (no music).
Fit it sit back and enjoy watching peoples pants turn brown when you hit the button.
Perfect! I wasn't too sure how loud those would be so I'm glad you posted.
And thanks everyone else for the info it's appreciated. Going to have a look tomorrow at shop :)

So a horn can't play Dixie like the horn on the 'General Lee' from the Dukes of Hazzard.

I had one in my old 53 Chev, solenoid to switch from normal to air horn & 100 psi tank under the dash (used to last about 10 blasts before noticably declining). got to know pretty quickly where the gas stations that had full pressure air. Mates reckoned they could hear it half way down Queen St when I hadnt even reached the town hall. One day an Asian woman sat at a green light, I politely tooted but no go, longer toot & still no go, switched over & BLAST. She jumped so high she actually hit the roof & drove off through the now yellow light rubbing her head. Got a good size tank all ready for the Jailbar, horns are easy enough to score

I know of a similar set up to #34. The truck air horns, big Grover type, are connected to the spare tyre, with an little air compressor also connected to re inflate the tyre.

That may be true for warrant purposes but the Road User Rules also say "7.4 Noise
(5) A person must not, at any time,??

Technically how can a "person make a noise" by means of a device on a vehicle! They can cause a noise to be made but they themselves can not make a noise.
I used to have a federal police siren control box running a 100w horn speaker. the electronichorn was my favourite button.

The horn in my VW Beetle sounds like a Noddy Car. I tooted to some yoof I taught a few years ago and they nearly wet themselves with laughter.

Still says nothing about the DB of a horn fitted to a car. all that says is you must not use your horn unless necessary. ie to prevent an accedent.

It may not quantify "unreasonably loud" with a dB rating but you couldn't argue that you needed the same range as a train that needs km to stop.
NSW limit "(1)A person must not attach a motor vehicle horn to a motor vehicle if that horn:
(a)is capable of emitting noise at a single non-varying loudness and pitch at a noise level of more than 120 dB(A), or
(b)is capable of emitting noise otherwise than at a single non-varying loudness and pitch at a noise level of more than 85 dB(A)."
option (b) isn't allowed here.
