A very delicate situation

+1 op don't go in guns blazing making accusations. Just calmly talk to them and explain the situation. It will be best for both parties.

Agree. We are not the sort of people to stamp our feet and wave our arms about. In reality I will be happy if they just say "they will have a look around". My wife and I are in our "mature" years shall we say. Don't need stress and confrontation in our lives. We will decide what to do tomorrow after much contemplation. Thanks for your input.

The dealer deserves to know why customers are leaving! if this is the case. they don't want any bad apples working on there yard.
agree with marblicious.

Fairest thing would be to go in and ask.If you never purchase another car from them again due to this, then surely you are not giving them a chance to rectify the situation.May be a light fingered employee that needs to be gone, or they may know nothing about it, but replace it for you - who knows unless you ask.

cjohnw, Mar 31, 6:38pm
Agree with that. Cheers

This seems like one of those problems that you leave your wife out of and go and sort out like a man, thus keeping the stress down. Just ring up when she's out of earshot and sort it out.

cjohnw, Mar 31, 6:43pm
Ha ha ha ha. Yep, but think I might go and talk to the service manager face to face. Problem is a little more complex because this is my wife's car, paid for by her. But yeah, i'm gonna deal with it - gently.

tigra, Mar 31, 6:45pm
Hope you are not leaving it too long. Go back and chat, maybe there havebeen other reports of items missing after service.

daryl14, Mar 31, 6:46pm
Now you're onto it. Chances are it's something innocent.

cjohnw, Mar 31, 6:48pm
Car was serviced on thursday. They have been closed over Easter. Will go in Tuesday.

cjohnw, Mar 31, 6:49pm
That would be preferable for everyone. Cheers

My Legacy was missing the '4 Cam 16 valve Boxer' heat shield when I bought it from the last owner. He said the garage that last did the cambelt "lost" it. Sure they did, because its really easy to lose a square foot sized silver cover.

This is what I'd say when I called:

"Hi!" I had my car in for a service last Thursday and noticed on Friday that the aerial appears to have been removed for some reason. Could you investigate what has happened to it, please, as I would like to have it re-attached as soon as possible!"

This is a non-accusatory way of informing them of the situation, while at the same time giving them the opportunity to sort out a solution themselves, with the least possible fuss.

Of course you take it up with the dealer.Theft is theft regardless where it happens and should be nipped in the bud pronto. If he loses his job you have done the dealer a favour as well as future clients. If the dealer is reputable he will pursue it to closure,if not he is not worth knowing.

owene, Mar 31, 8:19pm
May I ask vwhat colour is the car that you had serviced!

jmma, Mar 31, 8:23pm
Odd sort of question, where you going with that!

cjohnw, Mar 31, 8:31pm
White.

tigra, Apr 1, 8:16am
Yes way to go. it may have been removed legit but theyforgot to reattach

motig, Apr 1, 8:43am
This is a joke. If you know the guys at the garage well whats the difficulty in asking if the aerial was accidentally removed. And- why would it be removed in the 1st place! Pretty strange inspection.

ksam, Apr 1, 9:28am
It doesn't really matter what the value is, would you have been less bothered if it was $5 from the glove box! You need to ask, what's the big deal, it someone nicked it, they have a thief in the workshop, if it was my business, I would want to know, and to be honest, I couldn't give a rats backside if someone dobbed someone in and they lost their job for thieving (if that is in fact the case).

cjohnw, Apr 1, 9:37am
Why is it a joke! I never said I knew the people there well. This is one of the largest dealerships for the brand in Auckland, maybe the largest in the country. There are hundreds of employees. I have met the service manager twice, and he is a really nice person. It is simply that my wife and I find ourselves in a bit of a moral dilemma. Do we go back to the dealer with the implication of a possible theft and maybe cost someone their job (heaven forbid) or do we simply forget it! My question was posed in the "what would you do!" vein.

grangies, Apr 1, 9:39am
Do they put protective covers over the vehicles, when in the work shop!

If so the may have just unscrewed it to stop it bending too much or catching on the cover, and then forgot to put it back on.

I always put the aerial on the drivers seat, so I can see it to remind me it needs to go back on.

cjohnw, Apr 1, 9:44am
Good thinking! I hadn't considered that possibility. It is an almost brand new car, so I can see the possibility of them using protective covers. Thank you for that - I have just mentioned it to my wife and she said "thank that man for me". So, thanks grangies.

andrewph, Apr 1, 3:57pm
In one shop ive worked in, If the car was stored overnight under a another car on a hoist we put the aerial down or like golfs unscrew it and put it on the passengers seat so it would be seen in the morning. This is done so the aerial doesnt catch on the hoist or car above when you reverse it out.

Notice being the operative word.
