Ok, maybe this was not worded quite right. They were helpful full stop and not sure I said they were anything else, it was more the point that paying cash was no longer a game changer and is more a point that the fact is no longer what it was. I was never insinuating that paying cash was going in someones back pocket and paying in that manner was somehow going to screw me a better deal. The game changed because no reaction came from the fact I was not interested in finance, time ago if you were going to pay with ready money the dealership/yard etc would be falling over them selves to extract it from your pocket. The dealership I went to I trust or would not have bothered wasting their time or mine if I thought any different. The point I am making is, cash has little value due mostly to the ease of obtaining finance and basically there is more of it around than times gone by so its worth less figuratively speaking. Look I used to scavenge through rubbish tins when I was younger for soft drink bottles to sell for projects etc. I understand the value of money and what it takes to accumulate it - that is my point.

Thanks carclan--THAT makes a truck load more sense. To be honest with you dealers become jaded to the whole paying cash thing. You hear it time and time again as a preemptive strike to -"I want a massive discount" "a dealer somewhere" was just on Saturday dealing with a really nice couple. They had been advised by "experts" that you will get 3-4k discount on any car at any dealer if you wave cash under their nose. The trouble is that they had done due diligence. Found the example at the low end of the price range that wasn't a rolling wreck but then expected that cash would get them another 3k discount. They genuinely couldn't understand that this just wasn't possible.

I doubt there was 3 - 4 thousand profit on a vehicle that I was looking at, maybe I was wrong in assuming that. The total price was $24,000 and not to sneezed at paying that sort of money for a vehicle. I have owned all sorts over the years and thought that it would be nice to have a vehicle that was a bit nicer than I would usually. I also used to find stuff at the dump - old chainsaws, lawnmowers anything else I could try to make a buck out off. I remember finding most of a Victor lawnmower, lucky enough I had enough money to buy the carburettor parts to fix it, sold it for $35.00 I think and though I was going to be the next Ron Brierley

Well explained Kaz. I think that a big part of it is that the dealers that have survived in these economic times are pretty much doing it all by the book, the days of slipping several grand into the back pocket are gone now all the paperwork has to be done properly. They cant contract out of the CGA, so the car is going to be on the books. Cash offers are still not uncommon in the building trade, but I have pointed out to potential clients that all the risk is mine and all the benefit is theirs.

That is true, and the vehicle you purchase you expect to have been fully checked over. They do however reduce the price on the lot if a particular vehicle is not moving, or give a little more on the trade in.

I know the car you are talking about and the dealership, they are extremely good to deal with, and we bought that car, it had sold so that would be the only reason you might have thought they not interested, I'm sure they would of been had it still been available. There is another one at Ilam Toyota.

I think they are one of the best dealerships I have ever felt with, the service guys know their stuff and are very friendly. Non of this thread was criticism about the dealership, sales person or anything associated with it, it is in relation to how real money has lost its worth to an extent.

Yes, I know what you mean.

Thanks for the Intel on the other one for sale as looks pretty much the same, I will call them to see if they want to talk turkey. One other thing I would like to point out about the dealership is it is one of few that don't treat you like a secondhand car owner, after owning high end Euro's it all became clear. I continued to own Fords more for the fact it was an excellent dealership than the product being supported, if something goes wrong it does not seem to be a mystery and have always been given accurate quotations on repairs. I cannot speak more highly of them.

The car sold because it was well priced, low mileage and in excellent condition, it never sold to me because I dithered around thinking about it for the day - this is no inditment on the dealership or method of sales.

Carclan--are you saying that the euro manufacturers deny a fault with a car until the bitter end whereas ford/mazda/jaguar man up, admit there is an issue and then fix it. Or is it the other way round ?

On bigger purchases I often get an additional 2% by offering EFTPOS instead of the credit card.

The OP actually meant, cash, as in money up front with zero finance. Not actually cash as in many, many, many $100 notes.

Someone bought a $55,000 car from me in cash once. Had fun counting the $50 notes.
